2009 Audi S5: The Doors

audi s5 door final.jpg

The S5 got so many awe-struck looks this weekend, I was constantly checking the passenger seat to see if Nicole Kidman or some other A-lister had snuck in to hitch a ride. The car's sheet metal is pretty stunning, but those admiring onlookers would likely have been just as impressed with its cabin. It looks clean and elegant without being too ostentatious, and gets most of the details just right when it comes to functionality.

Take, for example, the doors. They work well from an ergonomic standpoint -- the placement of the handles and the controls is ideal. They look great -- sleek and contemporary. And they close with a very satisfying thud. What do you think of your car's doors?

I've got no gripes with the doors in my Jetta. They made a nice enough thud and I find them to be ergonomically sound, and they've got enough padding to rest my arm on comfortably.

My Jeep's close with a nice thud, but I do wish for a higher quality interior.

I recently had to drive a Nissan Maxima while my A6 was in the body shop. The difference between the doors is night and day. The Maxima's doors sounded like tin can doors, but the doors on my A6 close with a slid thud. Of course the doors on the A6 are little heavier when open and close them, but it is well worth it.

When we shopping, the car salesman actually hung on one of the doors for a little. I would not try that with most vehicles.

i had a 91 lumina, when you shut the doors it sounded like a pickle jar being opened for the first time. They were so horrible and noisy

now my mazda3 shuts pretty nicely. my mom's 09 vibe sounds pretty good too

but yeah, my dads 2000 maxima is sort of clicky

I drive an A5, and I am generally happy with the overall "thud" of the door when it gets closed. The doors on it are reletively heavy, so they usually just close themselves. I think its weird how they partially open when the doors open.

When i had my Envoy way back when, the driver's door would not close properly. I don't know what it was, it would shut, and open just fine, but when you opened it, it seemed like it never really shut all the way.

The A5 is truley an amazing price of design. Every time I see one it always gets a head turn and a nod from me. My neighbor just purchased an S5 convertible it's grey with a red top and red interior it's amazing! As pretty as the coupe is the convertible is even more so

And as for doors my 09 Subaru legacys door have a really nice quality sound when I open and close them but only with the windows up. With the windows down there is a real irritating
rattle I belive this is from the frameless windows.

And my moms 07 3-series has a quality thud when shut

I like to slam the doors as hard as I can to try and break glass. No broken glass = no satisfaction. j/k.

In all seriousness, I don't like doors that lack the structural support of the B-Pillar (surrounding the window) because every time I close them I can hear the glass vibrate.

I guess I don't understand the gushing praise this car gets. It looks like a coupe version of every other Audi on the road.

Is that hard plastic for the elbow rest? the pattern looks similar to the piece at the top of the door. What is the material in the center? Maybe this is a bit mid-decade design, but a stitching pattern on the doors would make the door panel more interesting to my eye. If you tap on the plastic around the window switches, does it sound hollow? Are they automatic up-down windows? How easy is it to scuff the bottom part of the doors with your shoes as you get out?

altimadude00:
1) it's not hard plastic, nor does it seem like real leather, it is more of either a more durable material, or a synthetic material that really does not wear whatsoever.
2) The material in the center is the same leather you get on your seats (in my case, that piece is brown)
3) When you tap on the plastic around the window switches, it does not feel hollow, but it does feel like regular plastic.
4) The windows are automatic up-down windows. Also, when the door is open, the windows go down roughly 3/4 of an inch, I do not know why.
5) I have owned mine since October 2008, and I have not noticed easy scuffing on the bottom part.

My only complaint is that the small pocket below the window switched feels slightly flimsy. it's not exactly fragile, but I do believe Audi AG could improve upon the assembly of that part of the window.

Take a look at this picture, it shows the door better:

My jeep's interior is spartan, but I still think that my doors have more style than that ^

adavis,
The windows go down slightly when the door is open because when closed, they snug themselves very tightly to the weatherstripping to provide a better seal and prevent wind noise. Thus, they have to move down in order to provide clearance for the door to open. BMW has done this on its coupes since around 1991, starting on the 8-series and then on the new for 1992 E36.

My elongated Bimma 7 has a nice thud but not overly heavy and feels pretty nice. But the doors are freaking huge, especially the rear ones. Tiny people struggle when they try to get out of the back seat because sometimes their foot cannot reach the ground.

My gripe with my dad's Cadillac was that after two years (I think it was DeVille Concoures), the driver side door started creaking really really loud. I remember spraying a can of WD-40 on the joints and it got a little better but the problem was never resolved. When we traded in the car, the dealer insisted that the car was in a collision and tried to shave off the trade in value. I don't think it mattered anyway since Caddies in those days depreciated quicker than the Dell dude. If I remember correctly, I think we got two jelly donuts and a mug for trading in the car.

I'm a big fan of the doors on my car. I especially love the way the strip of wood gently curves from the dashboard to the rear of the door. I also think the ambient lighting that comes out from under that strip at night is pretty neat. And lest I forget, I like that the arm-rest is made from real leather, rather than just some over-stuffed pad.

Unlike the A5, though, I can't really slam my door to see if it thuds. The door is certainly heavy and impeccably detailed, but the door electronically latches itself. Slam the door and it stops just before latching, and then quietly pulls itself the rest of the way closed.

My A4 doors close with a hearty Germanic thump. I love it everytime I close the door!

2005 Mustang- Doors are AWFUL. No storage space, no padding, cheap materials, and if that's not enough, the "leather" on the door is coming off. Just a bad design by Ford.

2008 Accord- Very nice door design. Padded arm rest, nice materials, bottle holders, etc. Doors shut with a reassuring "thunk."

2004 Jetta - Very nice. Doors close with a thunk, no rattles. Very ergonomic.

1993 Ranger - Not so much...
