2010 Chevy Camaro SS: Adding Oil

After several minutes spent wrestling with our Camaro's 22 ft. long and oddly twisted dipstick, I determined that the car's LS3 V8 was in need of additional oil. Therefore, I just poured half a quart of Mobil 1 5W-30 into the engine. Total cost? About $4.50.

The amount of extra oil you need to put into your cars always makes me afraid about my own cars--that I'm not properly maintaining them.

Any chance we'll get a picture of the dipstick?

Shouldn't you guys know by now that there's nothing to look at under the plastic covers on these new engines?

That engine should make you go WOW when you open the hold. Instead it looks like the inside of an industrial clothes washer.

Plastic engine covers serve only to allow lazy engineering.

Besides the rear fender flair you could also keep your adult beverage on top of the engine while changing the oil.

Can we get another snapshot of the uncovered engine sans the bottle of oil? What is this?...some sort of product placement piece for oil? :p

What's the story on those 2 resonator chambers hanging off the intake duct? Do these things really do anything? (Seriously, I'm looking for some reasoned discussion on what they actually do...)

I don't mind the unartful engines in modern cars, this is a reasonably priced vehicle, not an exotic. They're engineered to work and they do, so as much as I love a beautiful engine bay, I'm happy to leave the hood closed (outside of doing proper maintenance, of course) and enjoy the rest of the car instead.

randycat i am pretty sure they are there to lower the amount of intake noise. Cars have to follow certain noise levels. I put a cai in from roto-fab and definately notice a increase in power. The biggest difference is the sound it makes when you are around 4000 rpms, you can just hear it sucking in air.

I've gotta agree with Firstwagon. The Audi S5 in the LT fleet is a great example of how to present an engine. Yes it is a big-buck luxury car, but since the engine is one of the big points of the Camaro, it deserves a good presentation.

If we were talking about a Camry or an Accord then I might agree with you.

This is a Camaro folks. It has a monster under the hood. If your buddy, neighbour, co-worker buys one of these... what's the 1st thing a car guy will say?... pop the hood, let's see that motor.

What are you going to say? "Sorry dude, it's still in it's box" or "sweet washing machine!"

Have you never been to car show and seen the rows of cars with hoods up? Wonder why? Not to look a plastic box or a rats nest of hoses and cables.


Sorry but car guys like nice engines and it should look like one.

My A word car, a Type S, hasn't required oil between changes in 115,789 miles. And I was actually considering buying American. Silly me...

Ever considered the term "cost"? Why would GM waste money dressing up the engine bay when most people won't ever pop the hood anyway?
