2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS: No Remote Start

Camaro remote.JPG

We can debate all we want about things like the Camaro's look, likely buyers, funky steering wheel - frankly, once the smoke clears, this is a pretty freaking great car. It makes the right sounds, looks cool on the INSIDE too (glaring right at the Challenger) and is a blast to drive. A well sorted car at a decent price - end of story.

Our 2SS model with the RS package is missing one feature I'd really like to have, remote start. It looks like that feature is only offered on cars with an automatic transmission. I really like remote start but I'm not sure I'd be able to give up the manual trans to get it - anybody prefer a Camaro SS with an A/T and remote start over a manual?

Brian Moody, Automotive Editor.

PS - those halo light rings are tough looking so RS package - probably worth it.

Why does someone in California need a remote starter? I understand their main use to be warming up and/or defrosting a vehicle in the winter?

Do you live up in the moutains? does it snow where you live? does Camero not move when it's not warmed up and if so, does it take that long to warm up?

or are you seriously running out of things to write about?

The problem is that most manual drivers leave their car parked in gear... and you DO NOT want to try starting the car when it's in gear. Of course the system can be set-up to disallow start if the car is not in neutral BUT then it would also need to be sure that the parking brake is set, and set strong enough, that the car will not roll. The latter would probably necessitate some kind of electronic parking brake system, which I do not believe the Camaro has.

BTW, I would also love this feature on my manual car.

A remote start can also help cool down the car with a/c when it's hot.

"Why does someone in California need a remote starter?"

For the same reason anyone would want fog lights, MP3 inputs, automatic wipers, seat warmers, seat coolers, power windows, a convertible top, steering wheel controls, cup holders, back-up sensors, mult-zone climate control, navigation, or anything else that doesn't come standard on, I don't know; a 1977 CJ 7. It just makes driving that much more comfortable and/or fun.

Full disclosure: Had remote start on a manual transmission in my previous vehicle, and I live near the beach. It was meh. Used it a handful of times when I first got the car, then never used it again.

I have remote start no my G8 GT and I rarely use it. If I'm in range, I'm going to be there within 10 seconds anyway. That's not enough time to cool the car down. Maybe it'd be more useful if I lived in a cold climate.

As a Floridian, I can say every extra second of cooldown time helps when it's 120 degrees in the car. Big thumbs up for remote start. However, particularly on these manual cars a nice alternative (and not something seen on many, if any, GM vehicles) would be a remote way to lower all of the windows for ventilation.

I will admit I'd rather have an auto on something like the Camaro say what you will about autos taking the person out of driving but I can tune a auto transmission with just a programmer to the way I like it.

On the subject of remote start I see it as the fastest way to lose your $40K+ car to a car thief short of leaving the key in the ignition.

s2k1 says:

hybris-The point of the remote start is so the car will be running while the doors are still locked.

hybris says:

08:00 AM, 09/21/09

Locked doors are not much of a challenge to a car thief they either brake through or manage to hit the door on the inside.

hybris says:

stoppre75 says:

Hybris: The moment you touch the brake, rev the engine over 2500rpm or try to change gears w/o the key inserted the car would shut off.

Remote starts are not a welcome mat for thieves; they're probably a deterrent, if anything. They are part of a more elaborate security system when bought aftermarket and harder to defeat.

Yet another sign that we're all doomed - are we this lazy already? Incredible. Soon, people will want the "Toto" toilet in their driver's seat as well.

hybris says:

Having a car stolen 6 times would make anyone question anything that started the engine without you in the driver seat.

bodyblue says:

NO, it looks stupid on the inside, end of story. The Challenger is not as weird but a hell of a lot better looking inside and out (end of story)

I live in the frigid north of Pennsylvania, but I have really cared about remote start. Also, if you live a climate where you need to "warm up the car," would really be driving a 400+hp RWD that often? Doesn't strike me as a great choice with a foot of snow on the ground.

1487 says:

it doesnt snow a lot everywhere that gets cold. Snow isnt a major issue in the midatlantic states but it still goes down to the 20s in the winter. You can have a RWD car in a cold weather state. Trust me, I see at least 10 3 series models every day.

We have the auto all windows down feature on our car, here in SoCal. I find that is more than sufficient to release the pent-up heat before I put our baby in the car. While the auto start would be nice, I think the windows take care of more than enough of the instant heat. Plus, the auto start only helps IF you leave the AC active when you park, which I don't.

sabastian says:

I'll tell you the truth, I've never had trouble starting my cars with a key, right after I got in.

And as others have said, having remote start on a manual transmission car would be dumb at best. They should be parked in GEAR with the parking brake set.

altimadude00 says:

Having a manual to use all the time is much better than to have an automatic with remote start used some of the time.

Here in Florida, having a remote start to cool down the car is a good thing. However a feature like remote windows down, similar to what my Altima is equipped with, is just as good.

I drove my Honda S2000 year round in Boulder, CO. Its not 400 hp, but is rwd, and a convertible. I put snow tires on it and it was fine - its excellent balance actually helped in the snow and good snow removal infrastructure in the area took care of the ground clearance issue. No accidents, and only one close call - when an SUV lost control and nearly hit me.

Never wanted remote start for it, though. Seems like a waste of money to me, personally. If I'm close enough for the remote, I'm close enough to get in the car and start it by hand. I would also feel awkward letting my car run unattended, even if it is locked.

You need to move, far away from where you've ever lived.

You could move here, where we need remote start. When it's -30F, remote start would be awesome. Well, I'd settle for heated seats. Non-heated leather at -30F is less than comfortable.

stovt001 says:

Living in Southern California, like the Edmunds staff, I think remote window controls would be nice, and the manual transmission wouldn't be a problem. On a hot day, venting the hot air inside the car is half the battle in the first place. Unfortunately, that feature wouldn't help our friends in colder climates looking to warm the car up.

clarkma5 says:

I've always thought remote start was the dumbest feature...I will never, ever, ever have it on any car I ever own if it were my choice.

1487 says:

12:35 PM, 09/21/09

the point isnt that not having it is a deal breaking feature. If remote start is available, I'll take it. I could think of a lot of "dumber" features. At least remote start is useful. I can tell after you have it you'd rather not have a car without it. Unless you live in a moderate climate of course.

hondacura4 says:

"I have never really cared about remote start."

Me either. I understand why its liked but its just a waste of fuel to me. I have no issues getting in a hot or cold car and driving a few miles to let it cool down or or warm up.

"You need to move, far away from where you've ever lived."

Yes I have it took my family 10 years but we did. Still at $40K I'd rather start the thing my self. (Not to mention its one less thing to go wrong)

Living in a cold climate (Alaska), I chose not to get the manual in my 09 Challenger R/T. The Challenger also comes with the auto windows down for the cool off in summer. With 20 hour sunlight in the summer, a car's interior can get quite warm. But with January and February averaging -10 nightly, the auto start is a real blessing. Of course I also have a block heater, also not needed in California.

alaska44 says:

Oh, and the auto start is recommended by the police up hear as an ant-theft device. The cars stolen here are alsways the guys who go out and start the car with their keys 10 minutes before they leave, only to find it in some ditch miles away with some drunk punk responsible.
