I've done burnouts in the Camaro, road tripped across three states in the Camaro and commuted in the Camaro. Clearly there was little left to do, so I finally broke down and forced it into domestic duty. Yes, I went grocery shopping in the Camaro last night. That's right, I used all 426-horsepower to pick up some Triscuits and Orange Juice.
And you know what? This modern muscle car handled it just fine. In fact, thanks to its cargo net, it handled it better than most of the cars in our fleet. The trunk opening isn't huge, but check out those struts, nice.

This seems like a pretty mundane post. Every car in the current fleet can handle this, but I'll give the Camaro some bonus points for the cargo net.
That opening is insanely shaped though. The struts take up almost 1/3 of the available space. Seems inefficient.

Check out the small opening due to the struts. Not nice.
New poll: Camaro or Mini E for grocery getting?
Camaro for me!

That opening is pretty small. I bet I've have fun getting my golf clubs into it. For me, golf clubs, as opposed to grocery bags, are the true test.

WHOA! Small opening Indeed
I have a major request now which I'll give Doug credit for thinking up.
Fit two golf bags in the Camaro's trunk and take a picture...Really, this is a huge issue and a 'make or break' for many guys.
bumpy says:

That's it? Jeebus, I think the S2000 a few posts down has a bigger trunk opening.

You buy a Camaro to carry around golf clubs?!
dougtheeng says:

"You buy a Camaro to carry around golf clubs?!"
Yes, I would. I can't afford a car that can only do burn outs and look cool.
I would use the Camaro as a daily driver, and even if it was a weekend-only vehicle I would sure as hell want to take it to the golf club to show off to my buddies. They might grin if I couldn't get my set of clubs into the trunk.
carlisimo says:

This was the wrong car on which to use struts.
shaddai says:

That opening looks barely wider than the license plate.
Pathetic.
altimadude00 says:
11:36 AM, 09/29/09
doug-- That's what a G8(aka Camaro four door) is for. Plus you can bring your buddies for a ride! With a G8, you can look cool, do smoky burnouts, and fit golf clubs in the trunk with ease!
But of course, if you buy a Camaro, and that's what you use it for, that's your prerogative.
stoppre75 says:
11:57 AM, 09/29/09
AltimaDude:
What are you implying the use of a Camaro is? Seriously just a $30,000 tire shredder?
I mean, if you personally were in the market for a new car and LOVED the camaro would you then buy a Camaro AND another car because the most you can do with it is burnouts on your way to the grocery store (where you'll be limited to small items only).
This isn't a Lotus - it needs to be able to handle Monday-Friday tasks and a golf bag is hardly something extreme or out of the ordinary.
You + Friend + Golf Bags is a requirement for almost EVERY car made today

"You + Friend + Golf Bags is a requirement for almost EVERY car made today"
Agreed. This is an important criteria to me. Even in my MINI, I could take a friend and our 2 golf bags, albiet with the back seats folded. The point is that 2 people and 2 golf bags is a pretty standard thing.
If not, whats the point of the Camaro being so large? We're told all the time that its not a 370/Miata competitor, so let's take advantage of that extra size and go golfing :)
dougtheeng says:
12:30 PM, 09/29/09
^^ What I should say to clarify is that the Camaro really isn't a sports car, per say. Its a muscle car. This fact has been mentioned numerous times. That being said, I would expect a muscle car to be a little more livable then a sports car, and carrying golf bags is part of that equation.
oachalon says:

2 sets of golf clubs fit no problem. I have had 2 sets in my camaro before. Plus there is a guy on camaro5 with a video showing him putting them in there. The opening is small but the trunk is big in this car.
altimadude00 says:
01:11 PM, 09/29/09
Stoppre75 & Doug-- I'm not saying that the Camaro isn't suited for carrying golf clubs. I mean, it has a trunk right? You buy it, you use it as you see fit. However, let me give you this example that I hope shows you my viewpoint.
Someone buys a MB G-wagon and makes it his primary off road vehicle. It has four wheel drive and good ground clearance so it CAN go off road, but you don't see many doing it (outside of military circles). There are vehicles better suited to a life off road and are better off road than the G-wagon in the same way there are better car to keep your clubs and go to the country club with, but it's the buyer's decision on how to use their vehicle.

Gimme a greak - 4 plastic bags counts as "groceries" for you? Setting a kind of a low threshold for proclaiming that this thing "Handles Domestic Duty Just Fine!" don't you think? Let's see you manouver a stroller into that tiny trunk through that even more ridiculously tiny opening. Golf clubs? Fuhgeddaboudit. Time to take up bowling.

No one said the Camaro couldn't hold clubs. Rather, the question was posed to the Edmunds staff to find out the truth. Your vid does a good job showing that it can fit at least 2 sets of clubs, even though it involves loading at an angle.
stoppre75 says:
01:45 PM, 09/29/09
HAHAH, yea I'm sure a stroller is a headache waiting to happen.
Altima: I see your POV, but I don't really follow. I'm only asking the Camaro to do simple civil duties. I'm 23, if I bought a Camaro and 5 years from now i have a kid and cant fit his stroller in my trunk then the car has become useless to me. I see that it has a big trunk, but its only as useful as its opening...I don't plan on disassembling the stroller every day.
New Expanded Request:
IL should start a "does it fit" for the Camaro's trunk. I'm not talking trips to Home Depot, but normal everyday items that would go into a trunk.
Stroller, Golf Clubs, bag of soccer balls, a trip to Costco, etc.
What is the practicality level of this 4-seat muscle car?
oachalon says:
01:50 PM, 09/29/09
dougtheeng, most wanted to see, but most people right away said no way golf clubs were going to fit. Dont know about a stroller, and dont want to know anytime soon. The backseat does fold down so if worse comes to worse you can probably squeeze one through there.
I didnt puchase my camaro as a daily driver. Its my weekend fun car when the weather is nice, so the only thing that will ever go in the trunk is golf clubs.
stoppre75 says:

Just curious: did you do the golf club test before purchasing?
carlisimo says:

I’ll just state in our collective defense that when the current Lexus GS was introduced, the internet asked a lot of its questions about its trunk opening too. That opening was wide, but quite short in the car’s longitudinal direction. These things matter, no matter what the car is meant for – look at how poorly the Toyota MR-S did relative to the Miata.
If the clubs fit in the Camaro, great. But it was a fair question.
oachalon says:
02:30 PM, 09/29/09
Doug,
No i did not. That video i ahowed was posted online before i purchased my car and if the golf clubs didnt fit in the trunk then its new home would be the backseat. The trunk fitting golf clubs was not a factor for me in purchasing the car.

The Camaro is not a "muscle car" it is a "pony car". It is part of a genre of small sporty cars (not sports cars) that the Mustang founded. A muscle car is a midsize sedan or coupe with a large engine. :)

I had no idea there was so much crossover between Camaro buyers and golf players.
Camaro: you used to be cool. The only reason you'd go to the golf course was to do donuts. You've changed, man. I hardly know you anymore...

Golf club hauling is a fairly standard test for many guys. I think it's a fair question. My Lexus GS will haul 4 bags, thank you very much.

I miss the hatchback layout of the 3rd generation cars - the rear axle and gas tank took up a lot of room, but the hatchback did help to make better use of the space, so that long and bulky items would actually fit with the rear seat folded.

I never thought i would like golf but i do. I suck at it but do like it.
I am pretty sure i could have fit a third bag in the trunk if i had to.
I have had 4 golf bags in the trunk of my saturn aura.

The Camaro is many things but its not particularly small. Maybe it once was....but not now. (disclaimer: I've not looked at the dimensions, I'm just judging it from having looked at it beside other vehicles)

At 4000 lbs, it's not small. It's an effing tank. The '79 Monte Carlo my wife drove in grad school was a quarter ton lighter.
bodyblue says:

Doug.......that was the original idea that Lee Iaccoca had when he and the marketing guys at Ford had....but like every car everywhere it got bigger and bigger (then came the Mustang ll). Ford has tried to keep the Mustang fairly small but GM has not...same with the Challenger. I think it is funny to see younger car writers call the genre "muscle cars" when none of the older ones do.

The trunk opening shocked me when I saw it at the auto show earlier this year. That combined with low head clearance inside makes it a deal breaker. That's what I have the G8 for though...
Also, I think the golf club test is a fair test for guys.

Can't you people find some hobby other than golf? I mean seriously, it's a little boring people and you can find better things to do with yourself.
