2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS: Animated Design

2010chevroletcamarossbykurtniebuhrinsideline.jpg

So my architect friend from 5+Design is looking at the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS and saying that the Nissan GT-R is a more successful example of an American-style look.

The Nissan is oversize and a little bit of a mess, just like a big American coupe of the 1970s, as if it had been assembled from a lot of disparate pieces. The result is kind of utilitarian yet appealing, kind of like a Harley Davidson. Even the GT-R's oversize badges are sort of clumsy and overstated, like something provided from a third-rate casting company in Gary, Indiana. And yet the GT-R's design really works for him, he says.

In comparison, he says the Camaro looks so integrated and finished, it might as well be Japanese. It's not the retro thing, but instead the way it looks more like a transformer robot than a car. It's brutal and dramatic, but it's been processed by a sensibility that's more into animation than cars.

Even the glowing angel-eye headlights remind him of something from a Japanese manga, the graphic novels that Japanese subway commuters are so addicted to.

That Camaro sure looks thirsty for a Sonic soda.

Completely disagree.

If you know anything about the history of these cars, the opposite is true.

Maybe GM's TRANSFORMERS advertising tie-in has him confused or he can't remember past his misconceptions about the quality of automotive design in the USA.

America had a bad bout of design (who hasn't?) but from Harley Earl to Tom Peters, GM has been on the forefront of automotive design for a long time.

If you want to argue the pitfalls of their quality, manufacturing, and business decisions... that's another story.

So is a "integrated and finished" look worse than a car assembled from "a lot of disparate pieces" ?

I think people only associate this car with robots and Japan because of Transformers. If Bay used another car no one would make that associate with the Camaro and robots.

So in other words the Camaro isn't styled well becaue it's too well styled? This is a new low for even you, Jordan.

In my humble opinion, the problem with the Challenger and the Camaro... is that the designers were catering too much to "fans" or were themselves "fans."

Instead of giving significant evolution to the design, the designers just seem to take the original, and give it a vicious tongue bath.

Are you guys paid to advertise for Sonic or something? It seems like you're always setting them up in photo ops. I see the 'manga' like quality in the picture above, but regarding the GT-R- 100% Japanese.

DCuerpoJr says:

I think the Camaro is a good interpretation of an American muscle car. When Sangyup Lee was hired to design the concept car he studied the styling of the first Camaro and modernized it with design influences from military aviation. Similar to how GM designed cars in the 50's.

I don't think the Nissan GT-R looks like an American styled car. However, I would say that the previous generation (Skyline R34) does. It simply looks like a modern muscle car.

LoL @ altimadude00. How about Camaro Super Sonic.

dougtheeng says:

I can definitely see the manga comment for the Camaro, but I've always felt it looked very, very "American". Regarding the GT-R, I don't really feel one way or the other about it. It doesn't scream Japanese to me, but it also doesn't scream American.

GT-R doesn't look like an American car. Its just looks like a GT-R. There is no beauty in the NIssan. I fail to see how it's "appealing" to any architect. I also fail to see how the cohesiveness of the Camro makes it seem Japanese. WTF? When have the Japanese ever been known for compelling auto design?

so instead of taking 5 minutes to logically explain his previous post comparing the camaro to a HD pickup & Hummer H3; Mr. Jordan chooses to tell us how his "architect friend" thinks the GT-R looks American and the Camaro looks like a transformer.

If this is what passes as informative posts about the Camaro, just sell it now please.

I don't care if every single editor hates the car - couldn't you at least make an effort to write about what it's like to live with the car on a daily basis?

and I don't even particularly like the car, sweet jesus some of these posts are bad...

I think your friend needs to get out more. He's been watching too much TV and movies.

Good thing he's an architect and not a car designer. Tell him not to quit his day job.

kingkhalas says:

You friend is only saying that because the car was designed by a Korean guy.

Lame.

Kind of flying over everyone's head that all modern cars are designed in like 487 different countries. It's not like some engineer in Novi scratches up a crayon drawing on a napkin in a Pizza Hut and sends it off to the plant.

Whatever grouped designed the thing, you can all rest assured that input came from every continent. Including Anarctica, assuming Lutz still maintains an underground research bunker there.

Why would do something as silly as that? Isnt this kind of post more informative?

wrinklebump:

Actually, I would say most cars are designed in no more than 2 countries. The camaro was designed completely in America. Chassis development took place oversears but the design is American inside and out.

Obviously your "friend" has never watched Voltron seen Gaiking, or Voltes V---this is what the GTR was styled after, even the designers speak about Japanese Robots,

the GTR is unique to the Japanese character

I COMPLETELY agree, the past Camaro post from Michael was as troll like as they come

uncanny_man says:

I agree with the camaro looking too japanese, but for the opposite reason. To me, the camaro looks like a cohesive car with a whole bunch of "wtf?" detailing added on (kind of like a nissan). Funky grill? check. Rediculously flared fenders? check. Tons of toyota style hard plastic executed with great fit and finish? check. Not my thing, but that's because nissans have never been my thing.

stovt001 says:

09:41 PM, 09/14/09

Hmm, I can kinda see where he was going with that. I haven't decided whether I agree or not, but it is an interesting thought. I definitely see his point about the badges.

1487 says:

I've never thought the Camaro looked like a Nissan. I can't think of one Nissan that has this much character. I would hope GM never looks to Nissan as a benchmark for exterior design.

I think uncanny_man describes it well, afaic. On the count of regional styling/influences, I would describe it as an Asian interpretation of what an American styled car would be. :p
