2009 Hyundai Genesis V6: Passes the Trunk Test

hyundai-genesis-trunkopenin.jpg

Picked up the Genesis at the airport over the weekend after a week in Frankfurt. An 11-hour flight will often bring out the pettiest of grievances, but in this case the Genesis escaped unscathed thanks to its well-designed trunk.

For one, the liftover is relatively low, which is good when you have a full suitcase packed with clothes mixed with heavy camera equipment. The opening is also wide which means you can pretty much just lift and chuck, no need for precise placement. As you can see, the lift arms don't intrude on the space either, so I could pretty much shove my bags anywhere. And finally, the cargo net is actually useful. I just threw my computer bag in and shoved it under a corner of the net to keep it from sliding around.

None of this stuff is new or particularly unique even, yet there are still sedans in this class that don't quite get it right. The Genesis is not one of them.

The hinges DO intrude on available space--they've just covered up the space they intrude into.

Folding hinges (a la Audi) seem to be the best solution to me.

But, you know, for what you get with the Genesis sedan at that price, I'm not going to complain.

The trunk is cavernous in this car. I worried about the rear seats not folding when I bot it, but it does have a pass through. Brought home a 10 foot pool net last week, no problem. Is there a better 35k car out there?

Love this car. Anything that makes dolts that bought a Benz or Lexus with half of the feature content look like epic nincompoops is a winner in my book

Folding hinges force the trunk opening to be narrower and they are much harder to adjust (and cost more). The space taken up by the hinges are over the wheel wells anyway, so the amount of space they do take up is minuscule and they don't take away from the functionality of the trunk (i.e. vertical space or floor space).

This trunk looks a lot like the trunk of my parents' Cadillac DeVille.

The hinges barely take up any room anyway. That is one really nicely designed trunk. Pay attention GM.
