2009 Dodge Challenger R/T: Doesn't Skimp on Storage

2009-dodge-challenger-storage.jpg

The reborn Dodge Challenger often takes flak for being bigger than it needs to be. On back roads and in tight parking lots, I sometimes wish it wasn't so, um, un-small. But I never wish it had fewer storage slots. Storage space in our long-term Challenger R/T rivals most midsize sedans. A quick tour:

1. Center console box (hinged lid tipped back) with USB hookup and ample space for iPod and cord.

2. Oblong open slot provides ample room for key fob (not inserted in dash thanks to keyless ignition), assorted house keys and employee ID badge.

3. Dual-depth cupholders. Deeper well houses 800mL stainless steel water bottle so that it doesn't obstruct use of pistol-grip shifter. Shallower well works well for take-out coffee without burying tall (small) double lattes.

4. Random rubberized slot behind shifter holds tin of mints. Or chapstick. Or hand sanitizer. Or plastic caps when adjusting tire pressure.

I don't know about anyone else, but that's the main reason I'd consider buying a retro-styled muscle car:
storage space...

roadburner,

for people who use their muscle cars as daily drivers, storage space is nice to have. The 2005-2009 MY Mustangs had an extremely small amount of storage space. It's nice that Dodge included an adequate amount in the Challenger.

By the way, how is the storage space in the Camaro, Erin?

That's one thing the GXP does poorly. Get the six-speed, and the cupholders are arranged such that a bottle of water in the driver-side cup holder will obstruct an easy grab of the shift lever. They should've turned the cup-holder lengthwise as it is in this photo of the Challenger.

And yet the Challenger has one of the most lackluster and unstylish interiors i can recall at any price point. The dashboard alone looks like a shop class effort...in 1990.

Different strokes, I guess. If the glove box can hold the owners manual, my Accugauge, and my cell phone charger I'm perfectly satisfied. A cupholder is nice to have, but the lack of one doesn't bother me.

All I need besides the glove box is some place for my wallet and cell phone. A single "cupholder" will work, or just a small bin. When I drive I actually drive, so no need for a place for drinks, food, or any other distraction.

You sound downright un-American; I bet you even make people nervous by holding the steering wheel with both hands...

I'm currently using a 96 Firebird as my daily driver the cup holder in it is utterly useless. It is shallow and doesn't hold anything. If you hit the breaks even slightly hard any cup will nosedive right into the shifter and spill down the console. Then I spend the next Saturday taking it all apart and cleaning it.

Nice post. Does your Challenger have the interior lighting package? The picture seems to give me that idea. If so, can you show and tell us more about it. This is the first time I've seen it. Even the Dodge pamphlets don't do a good job of describing it.

Is it cool to look at, is it distracting, etc?

Thank you!
