2009 BMW 750i: A Tale of Two Germans

09bmw750i.jpg

Hey 750i -- we had a good thing going there for a while. You showed me things I'd never seen before with your sideview cameras. You had this way of making me feel important when I slid behind your wheel. And though I never really got into it, I thought it was really cool that you offered to tenderize my rump roast after a long day at the office.

You were everything I ever wanted in a luxury sedan. But then I met the S550, and it was like someone turned a giant spotlight on your flaws. That rough, herky-jerky attitude you've got when driving me around town? The S550 doesn't have any of that -- that baby is smooth, smooth, smooth. Compliant. Acquiescent. Luxurious. And the S550 also has a nicer cabin.

I'll still drive you whenever I can get my greedy little paws on your keys every now and then. But while doing so, I'll probably be thinking of the S550. Mentally comparing you two, and having you fall short.

Just thought you should know. Have a nice day!

Ouch.

I'm happy you didn't compare it to the Lexus LS. That is one of the boring looking cars I have ever seen.

And like I said earlier, BMWs suck:
Well of course they're squeaking, it's typical BMW crap quality. I'm just saying because the transmission blew on my 5 series wagon and the heater broke. In addition every other week the turn signal light both inside and outside would flash uncontrolbally and had to be fixed. One day out of service for each occurrence. At least it wasn't as bad as my 0|||||||0 Grand Cherokee that was even less reliable. Maybe you should tell Vince that the Germans don't always make good stuff (look to Sham Wow commercial for reference). And yes I know that the Jeep wasn't German.

My comment is the one I left on the 2009 M3's squeaky seats.

This is kind of strange because pretty much the same thing went through my head when I was test-driving a 750Li overnight. I'll admit I wasn't quite so expressive, but the general ideas were there. The 7-Series is an amazing car in nearly everyway, but after spending 3 years with an S550 it somehow feels unfinished. It performs better at the limit, but in every other way the Benz is better (even if only slightly). It is why I eventually removed the 7 from my list even though I tried so hard to like it.

subaru123:

I have owned a Saab, VW, BMW, and now an Audi. All of them have been flawless in terms of reliability, ergonomics, build quality, performance, and resale value. Perhaps its the owner...

I haven't driven the new 7 series nor the current S Class, but for some reason I've always preferred the S Class over the 7 Series. Maybe it's due to successful marketing on Mercedes' behalf. All I know is, when I think of Luxury Sedan an S Class comes to mind. When I think of Elite Luxury Sedan a Rolls Royce Phantom appears.

Damn marketing and advertising.

+ 1 adavis, I have a '06 Jeep and my wife has an '01 BMW 330Ci and they have both been very reliable as well. We are thinking of getting a pre owned '08 M3 because of the luck we have had with our current car.

At the very least, BMW need to offer the M sport package for the 7 here in the U.S. Since the AMG package for the S550 make it so much tastier!

To my mind the biggest downside of owning a 7-series is that I'd have to look at it.

@adavis2493
Maybe it's not the owner because my 2 Yukon Denali xls were flawless along with my 2 NIssan Maximas, my Subaru B9 Tribeca, my Tribeca, my Prius, my Pontiac Trans Sport and Bonneville. So no, it's BMW and Mopar quality.

@ subaru123,

I can find a bunch of people that have owned every one of the cars you listed (Yukon Denali xls, NIssan Maximas, Subaru B9 Tribeca, Tribeca, Prius, Pontiac Trans Sport and Bonneville) who have had problems with their cars. Does that mean all of those cars suck?

Just because you had problems with your BMW does not give you the right to make a ridiculous generalized statement that "BMWs suck."

I bet you think all black people are criminals. If OJ Simpson is a criminal then ALL black people must be criminals.

DON'T WORRY WARREN, AND FOR THAT MATTER, MOST PEOPLE COMMENTING ON THIS CAR. THE DAY IN WHICH YOU CAN ACTUALLY AFFORD EITHER THE 750 OR 550 WILL NEVER COME.

Tell you what warren, you are welcome to your goofy looking, uninspired and WAY overrated s550. After driving one from one coast to the other I can say with a straight face that the s is quite possibly even more boring than the ls460 (and uglier than kimbo slice). I hated every mind-numbing minute behind the wheel (and my dad for ever buying it).

This thing sells on name and because of the star, to people with too much money, who know nothing about cars. Just thought you should know. Have a nice day!

@ Subaru 123

Your argument is way too subjective.

The most issues I ever had with a vehicle was when I drove an Acura Integra. My wife’s Acura Legend, on the other hand, was dead reliable.

In my opinion, Nissan is complete and utter garbage. Look at the long term tests for more info. However, I am only witnessing a small group of cars that do not represent a macro population. I am sure thousands of owners have had no issues, and when people are happy they don’t scream about problems.

I just wish MB would put the shifter back on the console where it belongs. Those refreshed 2010 S AMGs are very nice looking though. The interiors are the real deal.

Guys I was just trying to prove a point to adavis2493 that I don't destroy my cars like is earlier comment to me inferred. As you can see I have owned 2 of every car I purchased and only one BMW and only one JEEP. First impressions really do last forever. And @ jeffal I don't think all black people steal like you suggested but I have known people that had a 5 series wagon and Grand Cherokee that experienced the same problems as me, so my comment wasn't based off of just my car it was based off of several others.
