Retro cool: Challenger
Modern cool: Camaro
I still have my gripes with the rear end of both. The vast blah-ness of the lower rear of the Challenger kind of kills it for me. For the Camaro, I haven't warmed up to the rear lights.

I think they are both cool, but the Challenger is retro cool and the Camaro is modern cool.
If I could buy both, I would. If I could buy only one, I'd buy the Challenger. I'm a sucker for a retro cruiser! I'm not a fan of the 2010 Mustang refresh.
Does anyone else notice that the Camaro and Chevy Traverse share the same, or similar tail lights?

Oh, forgot to mention it. The picture doesn't show it well, but on the Camaro I think their is this huge gab between the road and the bottom of the bumper. So much so that it looks like they ran out of ideas or sheet metal, or wanted to give you easy access to the rear end. It looks like its missing stuff!
Either that, or the Camaro in front of me yesterday was missing some sheet metal, which I doubt.

In looks alone, I'd go with the Challenger. When considering everything else that matters to me (performance, weight, exhaust note, suspension etc...) the Camaro comes out on top.
The things that keep me from pulling the trigger and buying a Camaro are the poor interior quality/options, the current $5k price premium at 99% of all Chevy dealers and the recent blog posts I've seen displaying the overall poor build quality of the car.

I've got to go Mustang on this one too. I loved the Camaro at first but the more I see it the less I like it. Challenger went off radar once I started to see v6 versions everywhere, and its enormous. Exact opposite with the Mustang. The rentals everywhere for some reason don't bother me and the more I see it the more I like it. Especially the sound.
sabre52270 says:

I have to say, one of the reasons I like the Challenger IS cause of its size. Mind you I said size, not weight.
You have a real trunk and almost a real backseat under that retro goodness.
Based upon what I read, I'd wished it was a bit lighter and handled better in the turns though.

Camaro. It's pretty nice looking in loud colors.
In black all decked out the Challenger has a menacing Road Warrior look about it.
I'm a total freak for the 67-69 Camaro and the new one updates that look nicely. Sure it's not crazy cool like the last gen RX-7/65 Vette but it has a pleasing shape.
The challenger in a dull black with some add ons and either chrome rims or gunmetal rims seriously looks like it should be roaring down a backroad with a tanker truck following it.

This is a tough one. I was driving next to a new red Camaro SS on the road yesterday and it was stunning while in motion. Something about the way the wheels looked while in motion was arresting and I could have caused an accident if I wasn't careful (and I'm sure I'm not the only one who was staring).
The problem for me with the Camaro is that besides the SS badge on the front, it is hard to distinguish a bargain V6 from the SS. Something about the back looked unfinished to me...I guess I was expecting a more attractive exhaust set up. The entire car shouted "LOOK AT ME" until it cut me off and I took a look at the exhaust. That shouted V6 Camaro to me.
The Challenger wins the exhaust tip comparo hands down, and it is pretty easy to tell a V6 Challenger from an SRT8 or even the R/T. Still, I'll go with the Camaro.
BTW, I've seen at least 20 on the road so far in Denver. I'm shocked (esp. in LA) that this was your first sighting.

This is EXACTLY what I thought! It looked lifted or something, and kind of awkward. I thought maybe the exhaust skirt of the bumper had fallen off.

The Camaro is one of the more hideous creations to come out of the GM design studio in recent years. When I see a new Camaro driving down the road, my most common reaction is "what the heck is THAT?" While visually unique, it has way too much of the Cadillac-esque chunky styling to ever appeal to me. The rear three quarters view (like your picture) is the best angle; I can't stand to look at the front. If I find a car that repulsive that I can't stand to look at it, there's no way I'd ever buy it.
The Challenger on the other hand is an excellent modern replica of a classic muscle car design, with smoother lines and much more road presence than the GM. When I see a Challenger rolling down the road, I think "that is badass!" Some might argue that it is too retro, but I wonder why they'd want to mess with a winning design. While the rear three-quarters view, in my opinion, is the LEAST appealing view (head-on or tail-on are much better), it still handily defeats the Camaro in this aesthetic contest. I'd give my hard-earned money to Dodge on this one. That is, if I wasn't such a fan of the Mustang.

Not a fan of either of these cars. I don't want to own a boat (Challenger) and I don't want to own a car with a fisher-price interior (Camaro). I'll take a '10 Mustang GT, please.

The Camaro defines the concept of modern execution with heritage design cues. Clearly it could be nothing other than a Camaro, but it also is clearly a very modern design. It gives you the idea that it recognizes its great past, but is also comfortable with its present greatness.
The Challenger is reliving its past glory days. It is trying to hide everything modern about it, and is trading on heritage alone. It is Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.
Clearly, Camaro wins. This retro thing is puttering out. The Camaro is already moving forward. The Challenger, not so much.
As a caveat, I will definitely admit the Camaro's rear diffuser and exhaust treatment is less than ideal. It just doesn't look finished, with the pipes and mufflers clearly visible.
By the way, I thought you guys were going to get a Camaro? Then you bought yet another BMW, yet another Audi, and yet another Mini.

On rear end styling alone, I'll go with the Challenger. But the Camaro looks better in front, imo.

I thought I would like the Camaro more after seeing it in Transformers and the 8 billion "spy" pictures of it on the internet, but in person, the Challenger puts it on the trailer. The Challenger may be large, but that size allows it to have far better proportions than the Camaro, which looks squished, especially in the rear.
cromagnum_man says:
06:18 AM, 08/ 6/09
I fail to see how anyone can honestly choose the Camaro "based on looks alone." The Camaro may be the better performer and overall value but it is never going to beat the Challenger in a beauty contest.
1487 says:
06:21 AM, 08/ 6/09
Camaro of course. I do not understand why so many people think the Challenger looks good. The SRT8 looks menacing and aggressive but not really attractive. The car's length overwhelms the wheels and it appears that they are being swallowed by the car. The camaro's wheels are pushed to the corners and the overhangs are tight like a BMW.
cruiserhead1 says:
07:26 AM, 08/ 6/09
I agree that the Camaro looks better in photos but in real life, the Challenger looks the best.
The Challenger just looks awesome in real life. It's got the classic with modern twist look that will last for a very long time.
Too bad it's such a fat pig. I wish it were more in line with the Mustang's weight but the Challenger is one of those cars you get and would be perfectly happy with on looks alone.

Funny how strongly split everyone is on these two (or three) cars. I see the Camaro appealing more to the hard-edged, forward thinking, and the Challenger grabbing the more traditional, softer crowd. And x2 on you having not seen one before in LA. I live in po-dunk coastal NC, and I've seen over a dozen the past month and a half. For me, I could definitely get behind a Challenger, especially in Black or Orange, but put me down for a Red SS, please.

I had hopes for the Camaro and I rented one while out of town last week. I was stunned that a brand new 2010 model would have such a horrible interior. Horrible plastics, horrible fit. The standard cloth seats were ugly and felt cheap. The exterior styling is the cars best feature in my opinion. It is too bad the Challenger is huge. My choice would be the Mustang. Hands down.
actualsize says:

Challenger. The Camaro went too far down the Transformers road. Hate the saggy trunk and the squinted tail lights.
stovt001 says:
12:01 PM, 08/ 6/09
How are the plastics horrible? They're durable and the texture is at worst average. Oh that's right, all the surfaces that you'll never touch are *gasp* hard. Oh no! Nothing ruins a care more than places you never touch being hard and durable.
I will agree about the poor fit though. I'm waiting for another model year or two and I'm hoping the fit problems are first year glitches. They did have a big conflict with their interior supplier, so I imagine quality control might have been relaxed a bit.

"Camaro does look pretty goofy in person. Everything seems just a little out of proportion. Other than that, I think the Camaro is rad."
I would add to that, that the Camaro is akin to that trust-fund girl that when just a *bit* too far with the cosmetic surgeries in the face. It just looks a bit "odd" when you view how it all fits together. The look comes off "constructed" and provocative rather than naturally beautiful.

You guys got the whackest Challenger iteration possible -- the small rims and tall tires of the standards R/T package make the wheel-wells look huge and show-off he more ungainly aspects of the Challenger's rear end. Consequently, in this case, the Camaro wins, but if an SRT-8 were to pass...
