2009 Suzuki SX4: Gaps Are All I See

2009-suzuki-sx4-hatch.jpg

Over the weekend I noticed that our long-term 2009 Suzuki SX4's hatch doesn't fit right.

Specifically, the gap on the right side is bigger...

... than the gap on the left.

This would drive me crazy if I owned this particular SX4, but not as much as the fact that we haven't yet found a Suzuki dealer in Los Angeles that can fix the airbag fault light.

Maybe they are different but I certainly cannot tell from your pictures...

It claims online that Quality Kia does Suzuki Repair.

I've seen worse. It's probably more troublesome to align a hatch than it is to align a trunk though. I'd leave it be. I'll disappear in a few weeks.

Have you put a ruler to it to see exactly how much it is off?

@Inside Line readers
I created a website with a "You Write The Caption" picture from my trip to Boston and put a comments section under it for you to write captions. Feel free to caption the picture and I will post a winner!!

There are instructions on the homepage on how to get to the picture and how to leave a comment.
*Website also includes crash test vids

And the Edmunds.com obsession with gaps continues...

Could it be because of it being rear ended few months ago?

Looks like the hatch was misaligned & the bodyshop didn't realign it.

OCD much?

Just kidding, that would end up making me crazy too.

Ehhh, it's not that bad. We probably wouldn't have noticed it until you pointed it out. If I was interested in this vehicle it definitely wouldn't steer me in different direction.

In the 1980's, I once checked 30 Honda Accord hatchbacks, trying to find one with equal spacing of the hatch edges (one side had a larger gap than the other). Then, only one out of 30 had decent alignment.
Perhaps that is one reason why Honda gave up on Accord hatchbacks?

The 2008 X5 has a similar problem. There is more gap than the other side AND it looks like it's not shut all the way; it stays a little over the fully shut position while the other side doesn't show this.
It didn't matter much to me but now every one says like it's a big deal, I'm beginning to get bugged about it, gonna take it in to fix it!

Its hard to tell from these photos, to be honest.

It's not something that you notice right away, but it is there. The trunklid on my '04 Accord was misaligned, but I got used to it.

Seriously? Wow.

I see cars as objects with a purpose. Tools, if you will.

I'm not sure how .020" difference from side to side affects anything. At least the steering works ;)

Its most noticeable in the first picture. That would drive me bonkers if that was my car. Way out of line.

This is so common I don't see this is worth noticing.

I bet if you walk around a Chevrolet lot, 100% of cars, crossovers and trucks are produced like this.

I haven't seen a single Chevy Traverse without this level of minor alignment error.

I don't think the gaps on the SX4 are that bad.
