Maybe it was the stress of being Car of the Week, but the 2009 Nissan GT-R went all diva on us, again, this morning requesting an immediate visit to the dealer. We checked the code and it was the same evap emissions control business we had back at 4,900 miles. And so, just like last time, we cleared the code assuming it was a loose gas cap, and went on with our business. (If you'll remember, last time the fault was caused not by a bad gas cap, but by a faulty Event Control Valve which was replaced.) Less than a day later, the light came back and we went straight to the dealer.
And that's what we know so far. The first day of the GT-R's second tour of 'Of The Week' duty will be spent at Nissan of Santa Monica. We'll give you updates as we have them.

Sigh. Another problem on a Nissan?
Seems as if Nissan has become the new Chrysler.

Need to keep this car for another year to see what else breaks!

Hope your dealer has some good news. Sounds like people who have the money to buy a GT-R should put that money toward a 911 or a Z06.

"Seems as if Nissan has become the new Chrysler."
Nissan isn't the new Chrysler. Neither company has a very good history. I've always equated the two.

This is an embarrassing showing by Nissan....especially coming from the flagship/hypercoupe. I have absolutely zero problems with the two Nissan products I've owned.
What the heck happened, Nissan?

Your GT-R is single-handedly keeping Nissan of Santa Monica in business!

Oh man, yet another issue with the GT-R?!?! If I was a GT-R owner I'd be pretty pissed about the high maintenance costs and constantly having to take the car to the dealer!! Maybe the GT-R isn't as good as everyone thought

I think insideline needs a new corvette gs when they get rid of the gt-r to compare reliability...and cause its a z06 without an ls7 and some aluminum

I know that this car has accumulated 2-3 years worth of miles in just one, so I am willing to cut it some slack.
But still, there seem to be more negatives than positives. Serious mechanical issues early on followed by multiple small ones that invariably knock the car out of action for a couple days while they diagnose and then manufacture the parts from scratch.
Based on what I have read, I am hard pressed to come up with a reason that (were I far wealthier) I would choose this car over an M3 or a low mileage 911 Carerra 4 or Cayman S.

Thanks for giving me a good laugh before I drive home...the 308 was waaaay more reliable!

Why are the gauges blue? Every other pic of the GT-R gauges had been white.

Wow....butt ugly.....rides like a garbage truck and unreliable...a super combination for a super car.

I hate to say it, but...a 911 wouldn't give you these many issues. I'd love to see a long-term Carrera, just a basic new 3.6.

You guys should give the GTR a Car of the Month award, since that will equate to about a weeks worth of actual driving time. Technically, it is still Car of the Week.

I believe the gas cap OBD-II code is P0457. Can you share with us what the code is this time around when you find out?

Time to get a C6 Z06. More time driving, no time spent in the shop.
I'd still love to have a GT-R in the garage next to the Z06, though.

Instead of a Z06 or 911 (good choices nonetheless) I'd suggest a Ariel Atom or caterham r500 cars that still have the GTR's shock factor but (hopefully) better reliability.

I would be so p*ssed off if I spent 73+k on this car. It may be a blast to drive when it isn't experiencing problems, but it seems to have more than its fair share of problems.
Maybe this is unfair, maybe all cars in this class have an equal number of problems. So long term the 911 and Z06 and lets find out.

You know what I miss? The reliability of the Ferrari 308. I miss the 308! Buy it back and write about it so we have something else to read other than "The GT-R is sh*t but we have to keep blowing Nissan so they keep treating us special so we love it and wouldn't trade it for the world!"
For the (actual) price of repair and services you can buy another 308 or even upgrade to a 328 and have money left over to repair and service it!!!
Did I mention I miss the 308?

The fact that people are even comparing a modern Japanese car's reliability to a 25 year old Ferrari is just too funny... I mean, Ferrari's from that era aren't exactly known for their stellar build quality.
Seems like Nissan did a pretty poor job sorting the car before putting it on the market.

I've owned an '02 Z06 since new (7.5 years), and 48k miles so far, and I can tell you first hand it's been nearly trouble-free. I've experienced two problems, both minor, the entire time: 1) the rear upper shock mount bolts were slightly loose from the factory, causing a rattle (fixed myself with a ratchet and 10 minutes), 2) the differential had a slight oil leak out the driver's side output shaft (common problem with these cars, replaced the seal, no more leak. Differential made by Getrag in Germany... hmmmm).
That's it - no other problems. That's including beating the crap out of the car on several HPDE's on road courses, auto crosses, and thousands of miles of hard canyon driving.
I've heard 911's are just as reliable/durable, but I don't have first hand experience with those. I do know they are much more expensive to fix than my Z06 when they do break.

When they do the long term wrap up they will gloss over the problems and tell us this is a 911 turbo for half the price and thats all that counts.
