Last time we explored the trunk of our 2009 Nissan 370Z, we'd pulled out the subwoofer tub and let you know that there were a pair of 4.5" subwoofers mounted somewhere therein. But who likes to be told when they can be shown?
The top is held on with Phillips-head screws and takes about a minute to remove. Less if you use a drill. The drivers are mounted face-up in what appears to be a ported (or bass reflex) box and not some silly isobaric design. But that's not 100% certain. (See this link for more information on what we're about to go over.)
See, the top is held on with screws and no manner of seal, but there are something like 12 of them and it's a very tight fit. Now, if this is tight enough-- air tight-- then we're looking at a dual-reflex enclosure and not a ported one. The odds on this aren't strong, but Bose is tricky
I've got a call into Bose to see if there's any funny business here, but for now let's just assume that it's a standard bit of kit in a really well done package.

Can we get a close up of the drivers or a bigger shot of this pic?

CX7lover: I think you'll have to wait until Monday for that. The pic I have is really crummy resolution and the car's occupied for a few days. I can manage one then, though.

I don't know how 4.5" qualifies as a subwoofer, but I know Bose does some pretty amazing stuff.

Look at the size of those surrounds! Can you measure the actual cone for us? It looks like the cone might be about 2.5 inches and the surround makes up the other 2!
@greenpony- They may be small but there are two of them making it like a 9 inch but the biggest reason they are subwoofers is how much excursion they have. With a surround that thick I bet those cones move an inch in each direction and hence can move alot of air.
Its also really nice to see some metal cones in a BOSE setup. I know on the 350z is was cheap paper.

greenpony - Adding on to umiami's comments, the use of smaller subwoofers allows for tighter, less rumbly bass. It won't make for an explosive performance like dual 12's or 15's would, but it's not going to be aurally unsatisfying either.
I'm not a big fan of Bose in general (especially for Home Theater), but some of their products are impressive.
Now, figure out a way to fit this in a car...

One of the most overlooked specifications on a subwoofer is the Xmax, or the full distance the cone can move from the farthest back position to the farthest forward. Like umiami said, just because the sub is small doesn't mean it cannot move air. In fact, I use a 6.5" sub for my computer setup that has a "better" sound than one of my friend's bought 12" sub.
I guess it really all just breaks down to the quality of components and the quality of the build. From the look of it, Bose seems to have done this right.
