2009 Infiniti FX50 AWD: Wood A-Peel

FX50 wood peel 800.jpg

Our longterm 2009 Infiniti FX50's fake wood applique is coming unglued on the passenger front door.

Hard to say if it was "encouraged" by a bratty child (or a bratty significant other). By the looks of the intact mirror-image piece on the driver's side, I'd guess no, as the top edge tucks under the seam pretty well and would not be an obvious target for a nefarious-minded miniature person.

Strike 1 for Infiniti interiors. (I thought they were improving.)

looks like a piece of wood vaneer

Why not use solid real wood and bond it to aluminum backing? That's how a real luxury brand does it.

Yeah that is real wood I believe, but it is too bad that it is coming apart from the door. Maybe it is warping due to the summer heat? Definitely disappointing, but I bet it will be fixed under warranty.

Turns out it is real wood. Fixed the post.

It actually looks pretty good too...

That's real wood, and it looks like from the picture the lamination has failed.

@Cheslin: unless it's a conversion van, it's likely laminated wood.

My mercedesbenz just did that...but oh wait, its 27 years old.

That is unacceptable for such a new vehicle in this price segment. I hate to beat a dead horse, but if something like this had happened to the Genesis...

I'm giggling over here.

Real wood, huh? There has to be an option for metal trim.

It looks so good you mistook it for fake wood.. ok.

It looks ugly, and cheap. Good to know it's as cheap as it looks.

Crappy that it happened. When stuff like this occurs, I always ask: Was it a first-year model?

If so, I just assume it's the price to pay of brand new interior parts being unveiled to the real-world environment and not yet having been perfected.

"or a bratty significant other"

You're in trouble now.

"Turns out it is real wood. Fixed the post."

If it's that tough to tell real wood from fake wood, I wonder why one would bother with real wood.

Like I said, the wood looks good and does not look fake. That was just my knee-jerk reaction since most wood in cars *is* fake.

Once again, the wood really looks good.

My 95 Land Cruiser is doing that too. 14 years in Phoenix summers is brutal.

same thing happened to my FX50s, 7 months after I purchased it. I thought it was due to the extreme climate of the aream i'm from (Middle-East) but then it happened to someone I know with the same vehicle...dealer replaced it under the warranty and I was told that several other FX35/50 2009 owners had the same problem.
Apparently, the replacement veneer is 'improved' by Infiniti. We'll see. Nasty thing to see, very disappointing....

Jason, I forgot to ask: where are you testing this car? Did you park it in the sun when wood trim snapped?
My dealer is saying that wood peeling can only occur in intense heat....I suspect this isn't the case.

I photographed the incident. It was far worse than in your car. I can email you photos if you wish.

Cause then some people would whine about having FAKE wood in a $60K+ vehicle from an upscale luxury marquee. ;-)
