2009 Hyundai Genesis V6: 10 Things

hyundai-genesis-555.jpg

It's time for 10 Things I Like About You: Hyundai Genesis Edition

 1. quiet, peaceful interior
 2. smooth upshifts
 3. strong brakes
 4. being a passenger sometimes (the rear seats are really comfortable)
 5. how it handles my iPod
 6. cool-toned courtesy lights when I shut off the car
 7. its V6 is more than sufficient, don't need to drop money on the V8
 8. roomy, easily accessible trunk
 9. cushioned, leather-wrapped dash
10. can comfortably fit 5 adults

Have anything to add to this list?

-It is just a stylish car. it seems like it tries to remain anonymous, yet it stands out due to it's understatedness (word?)
-Don't forget the warranty
-Doesn't require Premium Fuel
-Outstanding Leather Quality
-Doors make a good "Thump" when closed
-Maintenance Costs

It is a nice looking rig, for sure. I like any car that does not require premium fuel. Lexus and Acura had better watch out.

I really don't get the complaints about the dash needing to be soft. Sure it's nice, but I don't care. I don't come in contact with the dash 98% of the time.

All good points aside, the biggest gripe for me is the Hyundai dealership experience. Most of the ones I have visited seem to be run by the local thugs.

Hyundai BETTER get its dealership experience upgraded. This is their biggest handicap.

I have one complaint about the Genesis:

The bumpers dent easily

How about its fantastic reliability. I think that, more than anything, is important for people shopping in this segment.

The best thing i think is that you can get a car like this for around $35k. If you don't care about the logo on your key and you're looking for a fairly luxurious and somewhat sporty sedan, there's just nothing better out there. that doesn't sound sexy but i think a lot of folks want a nice car but don't care for all the high-end luxury and performance (and certainly the high-end price).

but i agree with others, if you're also looking for premier dealership experience, hyundai doesn't have that.

I'd rather have it say Hyundai Genesis V10: 6 things.

That it isn't the Pontiac G8? Just kidding.

+1 greenpony. Good idea.

You should buy the add-on "Bentley" logos fdor the car. In my area about 25% of Genesises have them and really make the car look great.

Donna, are you sure that isn't your list for the (less expensive) Taurus?

hybris says:

After looking at all the pics for this car I can't see why people thing it looks so good. It doesn't really look much different than any other car body style-wise.

In South Florida about 80% + have the wings. I saw 2 yesterday not to mention mine that have them.

So you hate the G8, love the unreliable GT-R and the boring Genesis? I don't gey it, Whenever I see a Genesis I think, "there's the new Hyundai Genesis, I'd rather have a used Mercedes,BMW,or Lexus for the price".

sgude says:

04:37 AM, 08/19/09

In a week, will Donna post that her hoary 1970s Caprice is 200 times better than the Genesis (as she did with the G8 GT)? That post still has me chuckling.

dougtheeng says:

The Genesis has really grown on me. I saw one with the hood ornaments on it the other day, and it looks tacky. I prefer the de-badged one.

My Lexus runs just fine on regular fuel...for all those worried, try a tank...even the local service manager says it won't hurt a thing..it just may have a few less horsepower...2 or 3% less.

wobbly_ears says:

07:30 AM, 08/19/09

@ptcdawgAuthor,

And if a engine warranty work comes up, Lexus would have an easy way out to deny your claim because you were too cheap to put the required Premium in your tank.

Good luck!

fuhteng says:

07:48 AM, 08/19/09

jeepsrt - she doesn't hate the G8, she likes it, but does not love it. She loves the Genesis because it is what her 1970 wallow-mobile would be today. Big, soft, fancy and cheap. Not that I never said fun or engaging.

ptcdawg says:

07:57 AM, 08/19/09

Those saying "engine warranty problems" due to regular gas, really don't have a clue as to how modern engines work.

wobbly_ears says:

08:07 AM, 08/19/09

@ptcdawg

No, I am not saying that regular fuels harm a modern engine. Engines & ECUs are smart enough for that.

What I am saying that it would give Lexus to slinker off of paying for an engine repair/engine swap. It would be a legal way out for them from repair costs.

wobbly_ears says:

08:11 AM, 08/19/09

@ptcdawg

And, have we forgotten the Toyota sludge controversy? They got away with murder on that...

ptcdawg says:

08:33 AM, 08/19/09

Just for kicks, I checked my owners manual. It clearly states that 91+ octane fuel is recommended for "optimum" engine performance..it goes on to state that fuel with an octane rating as low as 87 may be used...any lower than that, or use of "leaded" (who has seen leaded in years?) will possibly harm the engine.

From my experience, and it's a LOT, I run both regular and premium. The car might be a tad faster to 100 MPH on premium, it gets about 5% better milage on premium around town (in my area, premium is around 10% more in price), can't tell much difference on the road.

louiswei says:

10:19 AM, 08/19/09

@ ptcdawg,

What kind of Lexus model you have? Because on my owner's manual it stated that 91+ is "required".

ptcdawg says:

10:54 AM, 08/19/09

GS400, and the engine hasn't fell out yet.

ptcdawg says:

11:02 AM, 08/19/09

Oh yeah, back to the Genesis, I have sat in one that was unlocked on the dealers lot on a Sunday morning. For the money it seems like a nice car. It's a little bigger than my GS, and didn't come across as being as nice inside. But it's still a nice car and I can see why someone would want one, after someone else took the initial depreciation hit. :)

toye says:

12:12 PM, 08/19/09

What initial depreciation hit. The Genesis has been holding its own. A recent Carmax advertisied a 2009 V6 Tech with 12k for 36k.

toye says:

LOL

ptcdawg says:

12:56 PM, 08/19/09

Most any new car has a large initial depreciation hit, especially in the first two years. I'm not trying to single out the Genesis by any means.

cx7lover says:

02:13 PM, 08/19/09

Regular gas is only OK when the manufacture says higher octane is recommended but not required.

If $300 more a year is too much for you to run what's recommended, you have no business buying a car period.

zoomzoomn says:

06:53 AM, 08/20/09

Holy crap! Gas wars ensue herein!!! Yes, you can use regular fuel on this car and do so with no risk to affecting anything but performance (it's a modest change at best!). What not to do? Switch back and forth. The computer uses it's sensors and resets the adaptives according to the information at hand. Consistency goes a long way (i.e. brand and grade).

ptcdawg says:

07:55 AM, 08/20/09

I never meant to start a gas octane war, or have someone think I wasn't deserving of driving. Wow, some of you take life too serious.

I gave some real world scenarios, sorry some of you couldn't handle it.
