"That's the new Hyundai, right"
"Yeah, it is."
"How do you like it?"
"I like it a lot."
"Can I have a look?"
And so it went all weekend long: at the super market, at the car wash, and in my own driveway. In retrospect, I think I get this line of questioning more often in this car than any other car in our fleet. Sure, we get thumbs-up when we're driving the Nissan GT-R and spontaneous street racing challenges when we drive the Evo(s), but nothing, past or present seems to elicit questions and genuine interest like our 2009 Hyundai Genesis does?
Does anybody ask you about your car? I doubt it.
Oh, and hit the jump to see what an empty freeway at 5:00a.m. can do for "reported" fuel economy.

Pretty impressive, eh?

I've gotten some nice compliments on the Miata. Once a lady getting into her minivan told her daughter: "Mommy is getting one of those when you move out".
Although once I was at a McDonald's Drive-Through with my TSX and the guy behind the window said to me: "Wow that's a nice car. If I had that car for one night I could do a years worth of women."

Weirdly, I get alot more comments on my Civic SI than my 2008 Legacy GT. I think the Legacy is a sharp looker but not overtly begging for questions.
I get questions about my SI from 20-35 year old (attractive) women, and 18-22 year old guys.
Both of which signify to me that I have outgrown this car....

The problem is, this is just initial curiosity for a new model Hyundai that people were aware of, but haven't seen before in person. Seven years after purchasing my '02 Z06, people still ask me about it, and compliment me on it. I didn't buy it for those reasons, but it's nice to hear anyway.
Seven years from now, NOBODY will be asking about the Genesis, and very few, if any, will be complimenting you on it.
That's the difference between a merely nice car, and a great car.

Actually, pretty much all cars have this orange peel. I've seen tons of $100K+ 7 series proudly wearing it. In dealerships no less.
"but the Corvette was designed to attract attention."
Completely disagree with this statement. This maybe true regarding the first or the second generations but lately vettes have been all about honest performance for the money. The C5 and C6 are far from attractive looking cars. Badass? Yes. But badass does not appeal to the widest audience. Genesis on the other hand is supposed to attract as many potential vanilla customers as possible.

Cars with two seats or unusual shapes – sports cars and xB-like cars – get a lot of questions by people who think it’s interesting that someone would actually buy one. The person asking might secretly want one, but they think they’re too practical to do it. I was like that once… I asked my friend about his Miata, never thinking I would be stupid enough to buy a two-seater, but then I drove his and liked it so much I bought one.
For a normal-looking sedan to attract a lot of questions is a big deal! It means that people have heard of the Genesis… it has buzz. It’ll go away in a few years but only because the car will have been accepted by the public!

My truck is very rarely dirty and abused looking like most Rangers. Then there was the "Is that brand new?" I took it as a compliment, but Ford should feel shame as I got that recently on my 2001. Goes to show you how much has changed on that truck... My least favorite of course is "How's the gas mileage?" It's got a 4.0L V6, 4WD, and I'm heavy-footed. You tell me.

The most questions either my wife or I have been solicited about any of our vehicles have been with our two Hyundais (2006 Sonata and 2007 Santa Fe). The curious were those soon to be purchasing a new vehicle and had taken notice of Hyundai as a viable product in comparison to the competition. I think many of these individuals may have read good things about Hyundai, but wanted to hear an actual account of owner satisfaction. Word of mouth amongst friends, family and coworkers has led to at least six Hyundai vehicles being purchased. Maybe more by the strangers that asked us about them.

3 cars I've owned have elicited comments, but not very many as people are used to interesting cars in southern California.
My first post-college car was a '95 Mustang GTS, laser red with chrome cobra wheels.
I haven't had it to drive in a while as it's getting painted, but my '56 Chevy Nomad got lots of thumbs up and questions. I'm always the youngest at classic car shows, though.
My current car is a VW CC. People double-take it because they are still pretty uncommon, but I'm beginning to see more of them now.
I like cars that stand out some, but don't attract TOO much attention.

And whenever I outrun M3's, Corvettes, STI's, and the like there are usually more questions. I've got wings on hood, trunk and wheels and several occasions people thought it was "a baby Bentley" not to mention a MB, BMW, or a Lexus. Most people are simply impressed when they found out it was made by Hyundai. The Genesis is a name changer for Hyundai plan and simple.
