2009 Dodge Ram 1500: Moving day

Dodge Ram 1500 moving day.jpg

I got a new place recently and read in our blogs a few weeks ago that we were going to get a long-term Dodge Ram. Hmmmm....perhaps I could put that to good use.

So this past weekend I moved all my crap and our Ram was very helpful. Our 5.5 foot long bed was a tad short on capacity, but the crew-cab was great for hauling my moving crew.

I told my friends who I invited to help that I didn't have much stuff and that we would be finished by noon. Six moving guys, three hand trucks, and seven hours later, we were finished. It always takes twice as long as you think.

I hate moving.

Let's hear your pick-up truck moving stories.

The key is to invite other friends with Dodge Ram trucks...or Ford F150's...or Chevy Silverado's.. or...Toyota Tundra's...or....

Yea, except a minivan is probably more useful than a full-size pickup without a topper.

Either way, the best vehicle for moving is always "someone else's."

BTW, I draw the moving help line at the age of 25, at least in terms of asking my friends to help. If they ask me, I will probably still say yes. :)

My wife voluntold me to move one of her friends from work. I borrowed a friends trailer and used my Dodge 2500, she had nothing put in boxes and was not prepared at all. It took about 6 hours on a Saturday, at least she was thankful but what a pain in the #$$.

I help move a lot... one of the moves I remember helping with, we showed up, nothing was packed and the place was littered with just junk stuff. The kid's room had so much garbage on the floor that I wheeled in the trash dumpster, got a flat blade shovel and went to work...

Just recently I finished moving about 30 miles with only a Toyota Camry and a $25-a-day U-haul open trailer. The scariest parts were probably the 50-inch TV and the couch that hung off the edge, but copious lengths of rope and many bungee cords did the trick. Of course, it was way more stressful than when I helped my girlfriend's parents move with her dad's GMC Sierra 2500 HD. These pickup trucks sure are nice, and that 380 lb-ft was impressive.

Probably not the right place for this, but if someone asks you to help them move, and you show up and they're not at least 50% packed, you need to walk away. Teaching them it's ok to use friend's as personal organizers isn't doing anyone any favors. :)

Oh, and I have seen shovels used during moves. It's a funny picture. I lived in a 4-flat in college where guys from the second floor decided to empty everything from their unit into the back yard via the windows, and then leave it all there. My guess is they were just filling up the back of a pickup with whatever would fit, then abandoning the rest. :-P As soon as they left, the landlord was out there with a shovel and a dumpster. Poor guy.

Moved myself out of my freshman dorm room with nothing but a 1988 S-10. Was kind of satisfying parking that rustbucket right next to the stairwell and getting glares from the kids whose parents brought hand trucks and wheeled carts to load up the Mercedes.

No matter who makes the truck, "moving anything day" is way better with an eight foot bed. The new half ton Dodge is really nice, following this series and considering trading my 2003 3/4 ton 4x Dodge on a new standard cab 1500 4x. Would miss the ability to haul two tons of rock or gravel with ease - but the smooth, unloaded hop free ride is way attractive and very important safety plus on rough western dirt roads that should have earned this truck truck of the year. Rear end hopping unloaded pickups can easily swap ends when driven too aggressively and not uncommonly flip. This coil spring rear end, alone, relegates Ford, Chevy, double ugly Toyota and the pathetic Titan to the status of "crude" at best.

I enjoy helping people move. It usually ends up being a fun day. I helped one friend move about 45 miles away. He had a metal swing set he wanted to take with him for his kids. So, I hitched my 16x6 utility trailer to my 2003 Ram and headed out to help. We picked up the entire swing set and put it on the trailer in one piece. I tied all the swing up so they wouldn't do anything stupid. We threw 2 ratchet straps over it, hooked it down and took off. I was passing people on the interstate going 75mph. The only way people might have stared more is if there were strippers on the swingset poles.

Same friend, second move. We knew what to do with the swing set by now but this time he had a 12' trampoline that we didn't want to disassemble. So we took the legs off stood the trampoline on edge up against the swing set and strapped it all down. We measured the height at 13.4', important since there were 2 highway underpasses enroute. So, we proceeded through town towing the trampoline being careful to split stop lights as we went. It was another traffic stopping adventure.
