2009 Dodge Challenger: For Those Who Actually Listen to the Radio

challenger radio.jpg

I have an issue with the radio controls in our 2009 Dodge Challenger. I know, I know. Who needs a radio when you have a perfectly good V8 to listen to? But for those times when you want to switch it up, wouldn't you want to be able to scroll through the radio stations or satellite channels? For some reason I can't figure out how to do that here. The radio controls only offer a knob for volume and sure there are seek buttons, but on the display you can't tell which channel you're landing on. Aarrrrgh!

The steering wheel controls offer the same seek buttons and at least you get the display with station names on the screen behind the steering wheel but what if your passenger wants to be the dj?

The owner's manual mentioned something about a tuning button but do you see one in the first picture above? On the Dodge Web site, though, they do show a picture of a radio setup that has two knobs. OK, we don't have that one so now what?

Eff it. Radio off, windows down.

Where it says page, can you press that and maybe get different screens that may show station? I had a MyGig in a 300C rental once but can't remember the different screens.

I did not get the MyGig radio in my RT, glad I didn't now. I also wish to point out that the software in my Sirius radio that did come with mine can not blue tooth my iPhone. I do have this nifty cable to connect my iPod or iPhone directly to the stereo in the center console. Only problem is, you cannot navigate the iPod function in any way, it just places every title you have in alphabetical order and you can forward through them all, all 16 Gigs! You have not control over playlists or albums, nothing. Oh, and it won't charge your iPod when connected this way. So I got a charger and input cable to plug the iPod into the front of the radio and play with the iPod with my right hand as I drive. I do not have an answer for the iPhone, so I can not have hands free driving with the iPhone, I have to change my sim card into my old KRZR phone if I want that, it worked beautifully with the stereo before I got all techy with the iCrap.

That steering wheel is uglier than a sack of assholes. How could they put something like that inside such a great looking vehicle?

When all else fails keep pressing random buttons and eventually something might happen like

1. The radio will actually do what you want it to do.
2. The car will stall out in the middle of the road
3. You might find a secret nitrous button
4. The car will go nuclear

At least that what might happen. LOL

The MyGig Chrysler radio is a piece of "Daimlerized" junk engineered in India. It is not user-friendly and problematic. Chrysler should have studied the way Apple incorporates simplicity in to their products before signing off on the MyGig radio. I blame management at Chrysler for not living with this radio for a period of time. Back during the Iacocca years, engineers and management were required to drive the product and evaluate the product. Today, it's all about short term gain through cost cutting. The result? A piece of junk radio that is not expected to be updated until late next year.

Wow! Chrysler uses the VERY SAME gauge cluster for all their models! From the cheapest of the cheap rental-class Caliber to the Challenger!

Ugly doesn't describe it!

I actually like the white-on-black gauges.

It's good enough for Ferrari to put it in the new California.I agree somewhat though, they do have a lot of problems but the one I used in a rental car was very easy to use.

As for the gauges, I like them and they are miles ahead of the Camaro's gauges which are a joke.

So that screen isn't a touch screen? You can't just hit the station you want? What good is it if it's not?

Push the hide list button. If you hide your preset lists the channel you land on will be visible as you seek through the stations. My mom works at a dodge dealership and gets a demo every 6,000 miles so i have alot of experience with the system. My dad also owns a new ram. I find it very easy to be a passenger seat dj.

JACK FM? You guys have one down there also?? There is also a JACK FM up here in Sac.

I was looking at the gauge cluster and thinking that they looked quite nice...clear and sharp. Kind of a boring steering wheel but nice leather and stitching....does it feel as nice at it looks?

Oh and Lowmiledude......show a little class in your postings huh?

debo1091,
Ohhhhh, thanks! Will check that out the next time I get the Challenger.

bodyblue,
Yeah, apparently JACK-FM is the on-air brand of 60 radio stations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_FM

BTW, the steering wheel doesn't feel all that great.

Why do people hate these gauges? They're without a doubt models for the rest of the industry to follow.

First off, they're fully electroluminescent, not just "really brightly backlit." Their lettering is crisp and clear, and the lighting is perfect. They're legible and clean (unlike say, BMW) without being boring or gimmicky (ala Honda and Acura.)

These are the best gauges in any car at any price. Dodge is smart for putting them in all of their cars.

re the guages...I still like the way GM does the Corvette Speedometer. More detail/space to about 100 MPH, then larger increments after that. I think I said that right..anyways, if you see it, you'll know what I mean.

In the speedo above, in reality, only half at most is used 99% of the time.

I have to say 'yes!' on the gauge cluster. I had the same one in my 300 before I got the Challanger. I have owned like 55 cars and this is one easy set of gauges to work with. I like the electro-luminescent better than the bulbs always going out. I wonder how many cars I have had that had a dark corner on some gauge due to a blown bulb. I also like the day-light brightness you can put on the computor and radio, but when winter comes you can dim them down. Of course here in Alaska, winter is night for 6 months! As for the steering wheel, it is only ok. It is the exact same one I had in the 300, just a different color. No thumb rests, only light finger ribs on the back. But, it does telescope and tilt nicely.

curtisawa says:

I like the look of the display just fine. I do, however, wish the speedometer and the tachometer positions were switched. The other cars I have had up till now have been Speed on the right and tach on the left. It just feels backwards this way. Not a big gripe, but still a little thing. And I like the wheel. I don't like thumb rests telling me where I am supposed to put my fingers. I know where they go and sometimes I want to put them an inch up or down the wheel, which would be right where the nub is. I especially don't want it telling me to put them in the wrong position (9 and 3 in the G8GT).

bodyblue says:

04:29 PM, 08/26/09

The speedo on the left is so your left hand does not block the tach.....its a racing thing..

This is the perfect example why a women should not review this car. Hardly any women will buy this car and her opinions are best suited for mini-vans and the such. Nit-picky littel B*t*c

Sell this car already you guys need to stick to foreign models. You seem to love anything foreign.
