I rarely drive a car until the "low fuel" indicator comes on, mostly because I don't like to gamble with my ability to get out of town when the zombie threat finally becomes too much to fend off. But this weekend, I got lazy and the fuel light blinked on. Got me to thinking about the Focus' range. This tank only got us to 258 miles, but we've managed 344 a couple of times. Additionally, the most we've ever had to put in the 13.5 gallon tank was 11.784 gallons.
How does that compare to your car's fuel log?

My car only gets about 200-230 miles per tank in city driving. Tank is 16.5 gallons.

my car gets 275 miles. which is dissappointing since I've had a Camry, which goes 430 miles. Damn Toyota efficiency. Which now most car manufacturers have caught up to.

I tend to expect around 320-350 in any car I've owned recently. A couple of times I've made it to 400 in the Accord on long trips, but that's not the norm. I'm not sure my new Fit will break 300 regularly.

I have a 19.2 gal tank on my G8, but the most I've ever put in was 18.2 (with the gauge on E), and I got 475 miles on those gallons. It was all highway of course. Around this town with all its #*@*#$*@ stoplights I get 14 mpg. Yikes.

My Prius goes 300 miles and the fuel gauge shows empty. I fill up and never more than 8 gallons to fill the 11.9 gallon tank. WTF.
My Tribeca goes about 300 miles also and it has a didital gauge just like my Prius. It shows empty and it takes 16.5 gallons to fill its 16.9 gallon tank. The first ever accurate digital fuel gauge???

I usually get about 350 or so out of the 13.5 gallon tank on my Cobalt, but I almost always fill up when I have a quarter tank left, so that is mostly an estimate. On a roadtrip on a smoothly flowing highway I can easily top 400.

My BMW 330 coupe goes about 425 to 450 miles on a full tank, which I think is quite good at around 30-31 MPG. And my Jetta TDI goes 600-700 miles at around 50-53 MPG.

For our SUV on trips we get about 425. MUCH less in town.
About 350 in the car on the highway. 280 in mixed.

I consistently top 400 miles per tank in my '07 Focus MT. The fuel light comes on between about 380 and about 420 miles. I don't have my data at hand, but it seems to me the most I've ever filled up with is just under 13 gallons. My lifetime average is a little over 35 mpg. You guys should have no problem duplicating this in your Focus with 75% highway 25% city driving and a light foot.
258 miles before the fuel light comes on is lousy. What is that, 22 mpg?

I get 400-450 in suburban driving with my '07 Mazda6 i. Highway, 520-600. I usually fill up before the yellow warning light (approx. 2.5 gal left, I think, which jibes with the tank size and my fill-up).

My wife has a tendency to run her 98 Explorer down to fumes. A few weeks ago she managed 413 miles. It took 20.38 gallons to fill the 21 gallon tank. I keep telling her she's going to get stranded somewhere.

In my 2004 GTI 1.8T since August 2005 I've averaged 279.9 miles per fill-up and my average fill-up has been 10.086 gallons for an overall average MPG of 27.749.
The most miles I've gotten on a single tank was 380.4 miles on 13.047 gallons and the biggest fillup I've ever done was 13.402 gallons (out of a 14.7 gallon tank). In fact those two fillups are the only two times in 4 years that I've ever exceeded 13 gallons on a fillup, my low fuel light usually comes on around 11.5-12 gallons and I normally fill up just before the light comes on, so 10-11 gallons is a very normal fill-up for me.

I usually get well over 400 miles on a tankful in our 2000 Venture. That is mostly city driving, but I do fill up when it gets near 1/4. I could possibly go 500 miles on a tankful in city driving, but I don't push the issue. My wife, on the other hand, has run it so low, I once put in 24.2 gallons into a 25 gallon tank. The distance to empty calculator on the van said I still had 80 miles till empty, yeah right.
On the highway, I can go over 500 miles easy, but again I take no chances once near 1/4 tank.
With our Aura XR, we get about 200-230 miles, in the city, just like 1487. This is with my wife driving most of the miles, she likes the quickness of the 3.6 after driving a minivan for 7 years. On the highway, the range indicator says 450 on this tankful. My wife and son went to Disneyland yesterday, came back and still had just over a 1/2 tank. This from east San Diego County. On trips to Las Vegas or Arizona, I pull over and fill up usually with about 1/2 tank.

My BMW 328i regularly gets at or over 500 miles to a tank. It averages around 32 or 33 mpg on the highway. However, if I'm having fun on the back roads, that quickly drops to around 15 mpg. :) One thing that I think helps with the fuel economy, in my case at least, is that I have a manual. Going down the highway in 6th is definitely good for fuel economy.

300 - 320 in local to mixed driving with my Titan 4X4 and 400+ highway to "empty". It has a 28 gal tank and it I see a light just below 1/8 tank, and at "empty" on the gauge it only takes about 22 gallons....quite a reserve.

arm51 - agreed on the manual/6th gear/highway mpgs - my brother-in-law had the same car as you and got the same mpgs as you on his hour highway commute. I had an '06 V6 Frontier 4X4 with a 6spd and I routinely saw around 23 on the highway.

2006 Subaru Forester Turbo; manual gearbox.
15.9 gallon tank;
Average range 291, max 369
Average fill-up 13.6. Light comes on at about 13.0-13.25, which I think is a little too far away from empty, especially as my wife goes into panic mode as soon as the light comes on -- which it did the other night about half a mile from home.
Average mpg 21.7,
best 27.8 (in Canada -- something in the fuel!?)
worst 17.3 (couple of summers ago, with max ac).
5th gear could be taller
I keep a (rententive) spreadsheet, that has my old Forester (NA) and my old old 1985 Accord.

@ bc1960,
most i've gotten out of my '04 Mz6 i (auto) was 31 mpg. either you have a manual or (and?) you have excellent self-control. :) my range, with 3 gallons left, is about 420 mostly highway (although New England driving, even if mostly highway, never gave me great mileage).
i hate those trip computers that calculate distance to empty -- terribly misleading most of the time; fuel gauges are terribly inaccurate too.
i'm glad there's a post on driving range. i don't like big SUVs, so i actually don't care about gas mileage (some people seem obsessed with it when making new car purchase decisions). i hate having to get fuel all the time (had an old Corolla that got 40 mpg but has like an 11 gallon tank, painful). i like cars that can get me at least 400 to 450 miles before the light comes on (which is surprisingly accurate) -- leaving me enough to get to a gas station without potentially overheating the pump.

Over the course of about 45,000 miles, I'm now averaging about 30.5 mpg, and routinely manage 350 miles between stops at the pump.

The low fuel light on my '05 Altima turns on with around five gallons to go in the tank. Around town, that means I have about 80 miles to go, or on the highway, 100 miles left. The most I've run down my car was with 4 gallons remaining in the tank.

Landcruiser's range is 300mi light comes on at 220mi with 7 gallons left. 12MPG
ZX6R's range is 180mi light comes on at 150mi with 3/4 gallons left. 40MPG
