(2008 BMW 135i, 27,000 miles later -- Photo by Andrew Reed)
We've had our fun and it's time to move on.
With a heavy heart I posted a for sale ad on Craigslist for our 2008 BMW 135i. I hoped the phone wouldn't ring. Then the call came.
I'm being a little over dramatic. But it's true: two days after listing the BMW for full TMV price of $28,600 I got a call from a real buyer. It took four weeks for this to happen when I sold our 2008 Cadillac CTS at a fraction of the cost.
The BMW caller said he would call back to schedule a test drive. We'll see.
Now for a few quick stats: We bought the BMW 15 months ago for $37,145. If we sell it for our asking price (unlikely) it will have dropped in value only $8,545 over 27,000 miles. Impressive.

Philip...
How does your TMV pricing compare with KBB?

Did you guys mention the reflashing? And the full maintenance is still in effect right?
If both are true, I can see why it'd still go for the 28,600. I mean, a fantastic engine reflashed to be even better, a full car care program for another 20k miles, and the fact that 3 series depreciation is horrible? Hell, even I'm interested.

You have competition. There's one in Oceanside in your exact color with 3,600 Miles for $31,000.

I don't mean to sound overly negative, but I'm not so sure I'd even consider buying a performance car that's been owned by IL. Especially one that's been reflashed, been subjected to a significant amount of performance testing, generally been driven quite hard by a large variety of drivers, and sounds like it may need the common fuel pump replacement based on previous posts... Hope you guys are quite forthcoming to potential buyers.
May God help whomever has the misfortune of picking up your GT-R.

They've previously mentioned that they reflashed it back to stock so they could sell it. I concur that I'd want a heavy discount before buying an IL car though.

I wonder how they word their Craigslist ad for that lemon!

To channel Jeff Foxworthy, buying a car from IL LT Fleet is like going to a whorehouse to find a wife!

LOL @ not even trusting your own TMV tool
no sport pkg, leatherette, 27k mi... I'll be shocked if you scratch $25k. Best of luck though!
would love to see in the IL fleet:
- genesis coupe
- corvette
- mustang gt / gt500
- tsx v6

Time to play "I'd rather have a used (fill in the blank) for $28K." I'll go first:
Mazda RX-8

You can get a new RX-8 for that price.
How about a used G8 instead?

I agree with zcalvert. I wouldn't want to buy IL performance car for the reasons he mentioned (except the fuel pump issue, which wouldn't bother me since it will be covered for years). You guys drive cars like you don't own them. Oops...
Funny, though. The Carfax on it will show it as a "one owner" vehicle. Still interested, Caroline?
But whatever you do, please don't sell it to those soulless bastards at Carmax.

The potential buyer would be better off financing a new one since over half of the warranty mileage allotment is gone even though the car is only a year old. That high resale value makes this car a pretty poor acquisition for the next buyer. If it were me, I just lease a new one and have piece of mind. Now if the car was going for that price with more realistic mileage (say from 12-15k miles) then it would a much stronger business case.

2007 335's with leather, sport package, navigation are listing for around $30K. Seems like a much better value than this stripped-down 135 for 28K.

I would rather have the 135i or G8 like lenoroc, way more power and torque. My sister in law has an RX8 and can't back it out of the garage without driving it around the block first or else the engine will flood, not to mention it has tons of reliability issues.

$28k... what about an E46 M3? Sell your Playstations and you can get a new stripper 370Z (now with 100% more chance the clutch will fail!)? 'Vette? I don't know. I like the 135, but never from this crew and not for $28k.

I would like to see the new KIA Forte. When are we going to hear what cars are replacing all of these outgoing models? Seems like they come and go in waves.

I like the 1 Series myself. Buying a car a few years old is a solid investment.

28k is spendy for this car. My 2007 CPO 335i w/ZSP, navi and manual (plus new RFTs) was 26.5k with 28k miles. Can't see buying this 135 for more when it's got less equipment and less warranty.

BGDC, that's a stellar deal (perhaps reached at an economic nadir point?). However, not everyone can score the rock bottom price so let's be a bit reasonable.
This is common on forums as well. Every time someone is selling something, some wise one responds with their awesome deal and how that item for sale is overpriced.

I have to concur with @bloodyr above -
I have been looking at used car prices for the 1 series - and I cannot find any good deals. A used 3 seems to make a much better used car buy - in fact, it is rather quite easy to find 335's that are listed cheaper than the 135's - and the same goes for the 328 vs 128 comparison. I thought the whole point of the 1 was to provide consumers with a lower entry point into the BMW brand.
Hard for me to pick a 1 over a 3 - when the price is in the same ballpark. I am not sure who is buying these - so, good luck to IL in trying to get their asking price.

Yes, pre-owned E90 3 series can be a good deal. I purchased a CPO loaner/demo vehicle. Was less than a year old when I bought it, the BMW ultimate maintenance program really sold me, and the included extended warranty to 100k (for CPO'd cars) only sweetened the deal. My first BMW and I LOVE it.
