2002 BMW M3: Parting Shots

RockinM3.jpg

" ^ 'nuff said" Chris Walton, Chief Road Test Editor.

That's right, our 2002 BMW M3 is gone (Read the Long Term Wrap up here.) As sad as it is (for some of us-- the ones who weren't responsible for keeping the cabinet full of liquid-gold M3 oil), let's pick up the pieces of our shattered lives and take a walk down memory lane with the latest installment of Parting Shots. Walton said it best above, but follow the jump for more, and don't forget to leave your own Parting Shot in the comments.

"A car for the ages. Timeless. A true modern classic. Not exactly cheap to own, but greatness rarely is. In a few years E46 M3s will be under $10,000. I think I see some late night internet shopping sessions in my future. I'll own one eventually. My wife will just have to deal with it."

-Scott Oldham, Editor-in-Chief, Inside Line

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The lesson here is to never, ever loan your M3 to a friend. This car is a victim of serial abuse - every shift ripped at peak rpm. Is it any wonder that the engine swills oil, the second gear synchro is toast and the shift linkage is worn? This car needs on on lengthy spell in rehab and a careful elderly owner."

-Michael Jordan, Executive Editor, Inside Line

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'd like to use my space to mention the navigation system. In short, avoid it on a used BMW. You might as well have a big hole in the dash with a nice potted bamboo growing inside. It's slow, unintuitive and somehow manages to make first-gen iDrive make sense. This certainly shows the folly of this decade's rapidly evolving in-car electronics interfaces. The latest-and-greatest in your new car quickly becomes a hapless dinosaur in somebody else's used car."

-James Riswick, Automotive Editor

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"If I remember correctly, the original idea was to see what kind of cool car we could get for about the same price as a new, nicely equipped Altima or Camry. Would I rather have this used M3 rather than a new car that's at the same price range - yes, yes, 100 times yes!!!

What a blast to drive - it still feels fast and still looks good. Price of maint. and/or repairs might ultimately keep me away however."

-Brian Moody, Road Test Editor

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nav sucked. Stereo sucked. Shift linkage sucked. Clutch sucked. Maintenance sucked. Trim pieces sucked. Stinky crayon smell sucked. Dropping it into 3rd gear with a quick blip of the throttle as you approach a 60mph bend, feeling the front wheels grab hold of the road surface as you will the car through the corner only to have the car will you back, urging you to go faster as you crest the next rise with the engine tearing past seven thousand rpm's... I'm sorry what? I'll take it.

- Kurt Niebuhr, Photo Editor

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"My favorite memory of our E46 M3 is the weekend I autocrossed it. It got so loose through the cones, but its precise, communicative steering made it a friendly car to gather up. It soon became a game of how big a slide I could get it into and still bring it back. And once I figured out how the M3 wanted to be driven, it ran some pretty good times, too"

- Erin Riches, Senior Editor Inside Line

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sadlier: "I've never gotten such satisfaction out of simply starting a car up -- there's nothing like the e46 M3's unadulterated growl at ignition. You know this car is special from the first time you turn the key."

Magrath: "Do you mean "you know it's special" because it's always asking for oil when you start it? Or because you're high from the crayon smell?"

Sadlier: "You should include your replies to the parting shots as well."

Mike Magrath, Vehicle Testing Assistant & Josh Sadlier, Associate Editor

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'm going to miss this M3 for many, many reasons. I have fond memories of sliding it around Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, slinging it through the local mountain roads and listening to its 8000-rpm swan song before every shift. But, the memory I'll never forget, the one that is forever etched into my cerebral cortex, is that of my wife -- in labor -- screaming at me from the passenger seat as I searched for a gas station on our 1:00 am trip to the hospital for the birth of our first child.

To say I have some memories in this car is, as they say, an understatement."

-Josh Jacquot, Senior Road Test Editor

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It's the dream car. Can't afford an M3? Wait a few years and it's still an awesome car, now affordable. The new M3 may have a better nav system and hill-hold, but the old one has character. Just add a 99-cent air freshener and you're all set."

-Donna DeRosa, Managing Editor

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember that spare quart of oil in the trunk that sprung a leak? And we didn't realize anything was wrong until it was almost empty? Well that was me. Sorry.

Anonymous.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Proved beyond a doubt that the M badge is more than a fashion accessory.

Every time we beat on it, it shrugged it off and came back for more.

I'm amazed at how excellent the leather still looks.

I don't recall the Crayola-scent option from 2002, but this M3 definitely has it."

Undoubtedly a cool car. An older friend recently bought a Laguna Seca Blue version of the car, and it certainly is a much different and sophisticated drive compared to my Mustang.

Regarding the long-term car, I suppose the most lasting (and only) memory of it would be me driving down Kanan seeing you and Josh in the M3 and Evo driving up and then running back into you guys on Latigo.

Wow, what a wrap-up. The E46 M3 will go down in history as one of the all-time greats, no doubt.

3ricchu,

Believe it or not, we still talk about that day we ran into you (and another reader) on that drive. Glad you stopped by and said hello! Hope the 'stang is still treating you well.

Josh Jacquot definitely has the most interesting memory of this car. You knew the baby was coming sometime soon but didn't keep the car fueled and ready to go? :P thats a very cool story.

Sad to see the M3 go, as its one of the last BMWs that I adore. My mom's neighbour has a silver one, and I love getting the chance to check it out.

IL seems to be losing a lot of cars in the next weeks....are we to expect the announcement of some replacements anytime soon?

You just re-ignited for fire to obtain a 2001-2003 M5. Thank you.

My money market will be sending you death threats though.

blueguy - see, I thought that too when I was in the market for a car. But with that kind of repair and maintenance expense, I'm glad they didn't. I still want one, but I'm very glad I bought my G8 GT on a student budget.

BGDC -

The m5 calls you my friend. If you like that I6, try out the v8.

Glad to see my original choice for a new car in 2002 was a good one. Although I ended up cancelling my order for an '02 M3 and purchased an '02 Z06 instead, which I love, I still think the '02 M3 is a superb car, and everytime I see one, I think "nice car!" Maybe I'll pick one up to play with for a year or two like you guys did - just to see what I missed.

UGHHHH i have lusted after an E46 M3 since the first time I saw one. Now they are coming into affordability (minus maintenance I guess), and the spark has been reignited. This is the last car BMW made that I have genuinely liked, and is the only car today that I would consider taking on a car payment for...screw the maintenance bills, I need one!

Who wrote the wrap up? It's terrific. I can't believe I haven't bought one -- yet!

Thanks for all of the informative posts on this car- after lusting after these cars since they debuted in 2001, I finally bought a VERY nice used example about 18 months ago. I just passed 100000 miles and it's going great! I agree with all of you that this car has character! I also think that your 'crayon smell' was probably from the spilt oil in the trunk...

There's a Competition Package M3 out there with my name on it- I just have to find it.

I got goosebumps reading the comments from the editors. I'm so lucky to own one. I remember the day I bought it- I was choosing between an 05 CLK500 and the 04 M3 on the lot (back in 2006)...I think I made the right choice :)

My car is currently being shipped to HorsepowerFreaks for a stage II turbo kit....what do you say StingRay..want to run? :)

A couple pics of my car!

As a current owner of a 2002 M3, I still enjoy firing it up every day. I was faced with the same question nearly 5 years ago, buy new or a used M3. I have no regrets and no plans to sell. The car's a classic.

roadburner says:

03:27 PM, 08/14/09

I wish I could find the Sterling Gray/Imola M3 I let get away; the only options were the H-K sound system and xenons. Manual seats, no sunroof.
Perfect.

What? No parting shot from Sadlier? I'll do it for him:
"This engine is absolutely feral."
'Nuff said.
That an E46 M3 is my next car (after stoking the fires with a E46 325i sport package/manual) is a given. It all coalesced for me one day last year when, as I was walking into the commissary at Ft. Myer (Arlington National Cemetary), I noticed a well-kept 3.0 CS, in medium silver. I squinted and BAM! Dammit, I realized the E46 M3 is a direct descendant of that car, all the way down to the fender gills. I smiled and mumbled to myself, "I will never get rid of my M3 when I get it."
I hope some enthusiast, 20 or 30 years down the line, will have the same experience with my M3 as I did with that 3.0 CS.

How about replacing it with a 993?

hondacura4 says:

"How about replacing it with a 993?"

A 911 would be nice but all too common. How about a 1997-2000 3.2L 6MT NSX-T? There are quite a few excellent available examples around the US that are between the $28-$40K range that have decent mileage. Autotrader.com has more than a few good listings.

Good pick! I wouldn't complain about that either...

thedream21479 says:

I've owned 2 NSX's...one was an 1992 (from 1995-1998), then a 1998 NSX-T. The 1992 had a lot of typical Honda issues---bad power window motors, A/C compressor went out, clutch went out at 30k miles, Bose amps went out...but it was a blast to drive. The 1998 was reliable as a top...except for the propensity for both cars to chew through rear tires.
