Below are the fuel economy numbers for June 2009. We've listed the best, worst and overall average tanks.
As always, we were missing a few cars that were out of town or unavailable at the time of this writing. I'll continue to add them as they come in and let you know in the comments.

So you only give up 2mpg for all the practicalities of a Honda Fit versus a Smart? Then again, the TDI gets better mileage on cheaper fuel (for now) with as much if not more space than the Fit. Imagine what a TDI Rabbit/Golf could do in the US!
Also, I think it's interesting that the big V8s in the S5, M3, and 750i are getting about equal mileage with the 370z, a V6 without many fans on the Edmunds staff.

Great photo of the smart fortwo with Old Glory in the reflection. I'm guessing Oldham took the shot.

I am actually pretty disappointed in the A4, and impressed with the S5.

How did Edmunds manage to get only 12.7 MPG (worst) out of a natural gas Civic?

You do realize a good share of the cars mentioned were given by the manufacturer for testing purposes.
If you were offered a $90,000 BMW for free, wouldn't you take it?

I'm pretty sure they are going to offer a TDI Golf/Rabbit in the US. Should be an excellent little car indeed.

I can't believe that you guys can't get more than 22mpg average out of the A4. Does this thing just sit in bumper to bumper traffic all day?

"If you were offered a $90,000 BMW for free, wouldn't you take it?"
How does that help those of us who want to read about something not made by Audi, Honda or BMW?
This list has way too many domestic brands on it. How about adding a few more BMWs to balance it out. Oh wait before someone responds let me beat them to this line "IL tests exciting cars and its not their fault that Detroit doesnt make any exciting vehicles. If you want to read about toasters get CR!".
Makes perfect sense because the Insight, Civic GX and SmartCar are WAY exciting. who wants to read about a Camaro, Mustang GT (or GT500), Vette, Cobalt SS or Fusion hybrid? No one I'm sure.
In terms of family vehicles I'd love to see a Fusion hybrid and Equinox (not that anyone reading IL drives such dull vehicles- I mean most of us drive M3's) added but I guess thats all dependent on how quickly GM or Ford will hand over a free one.

I can't believe you guys aren't getting better numbers for the 135i, you all must have a heavy foot. I average 21.5 with 75% rubber-necking traffic. My worst commute has been 16mpg, long expressway hauls average 28-31mpg, higher with cruise. I'm moderately aggressive when the road permits, but I try and keep to a constant 2nd gear roll in traffic.
No doubt...this car can do better.

The Jetta continues to beat the Smart. The Genesis is only 2 mpg off the pace set by the Suzuki. And the greenies' dream Civic GX is neck-and-neck with the practical, fun-to-drive Fit.
Nice.

It's not always the case, but our results usually come very close to EPA combined mpg.
135i manual: 20 mpg EPA, 19.8 IL
A4 Avant Turbo automatic: 23 mpg EPA, 21.9 IL
And west side traffic (anything between downtown LA and our Santa Monica office) is notoriously bad, whether you're on the freeway or not. I'm frankly amazaed that we come as close to EPA combined as we do.
And when we do miss it, it's usually in a car that encourages a heavy right foot and frequent trips to Mulholland Drive, like the Nissan 370Z. (21 mpg EPA, 17.9 IL
And another thing: are you guys actually calculating it by dividing trip odometer miles by gallons added for each and every complete? Or are you relying on the in-car gauges at particular moments in time?
Those things are notoriously optimisitc, and they estimate fuel usage--there is no fuel flow meter in the system. Try comparing a hand calculation to your in-car gauge some time.

Probably better for a 135i-specific post, but I'm curious how the mileage numbers compare between pre-DME vs DME tune.

the 135's mileage seems perfectly reasonable for a car rated at 18/26.
