2009 Suzuki SX4: They Made It Better Than Before

Two-SX4s-1.jpg

Several times I've posted blogs detailing my fondness for our long-term 2009 Suzuki SX4. I even said I would buy one.

Well, now I'm not so sure. Instead I think I would wait for Suzuki to get its 2010 Suzuki SX4 Sportback to market. I just had a chance to drive this new model, and it's really good. It's the black one on the left. Notice it doesn't have a roof rack like our long-termer. In fact Suzuki has turned down the car's SUV-vibe and replaced it with a much more desirable small performance car look, complete with a mild body kit, a lower ride height, a sport-tuned suspension, nice looking 17-inch wheels and lower profile Dunlop rubber.

And here's the best part: They gave it more power.

Under the hood is an all-new 150 hp 2.0-liter with variable valve timing, and it transforms the SX4 from slug to fast enough to get your attention. The engine works with either a new six-speed manual, which would be my personal choice, or an all-new and nicely tuned CVT with available paddle shifters.

And get this; it even gets better mileage. More than 2 mpg more according to Suzuki, and it has a larger fuel tank (2 additional gallons) to improve range.

They bettered the inside too, with a new backlit instrument cluster, a new center stack design, new climate controls and new fabrics.

You know, I still like our little SX4, but maybe I can talk Suzuki into letting us trade up when the new Sportback hits dealers in a couple of months.

Sure would be nice.

looks nice for sure. the only element i'd change are the taillights... red it out.

wow, its like suzuki fixed every problem insideline complained about...

I agree, I think the red tail lights would look a bit better. I think the SX4 is a neat little rig. IL needs more tests like this one....you know something that costs less than $25,000........

"wow, its like suzuki fixed every problem insideline complained about..."

Especially if they addressed the lack of soft touch materials at the touch points.

Can you get the manual transmission and retain AWD? If so then you could very easily get a bargain WRX.

Hopefully Suzuki will make the body kit an option for those that need ride heigth and ground clearance.

For '09, you can have AWD and auto.

Wow, nice improvements! I will never be in the market for a car of that size/price again, but that should spark some interest. Could be a great car for a teen or college student.

@huyracing: all-red taillights are dangerous.

But yeah, kudos to Suzuki for updating their little wienerbox.

subaru123 says:

@mikeolan: All red tail lights aren't dangerous, just the execution of them. My Tribeca has all red ones but everyone can see my turn signals because of the near wrap around side mirror repeaters. Of course this has nothing to do with your comment if your saying the reverse lights are also redded out; they should ALWAYS be clear.

clarkma5 says:

You can use filters on all-red lights to give amber turn signals, à la Porsche 968.

The SX4 might be a genuinely competitive car now. Too bad there won't be any dealers left to sell or service it.

Sam,

Isn't a bargain 'Rex an Impreza?

merkava5 says:

I think Suzuki has done a wonderful job of finally making this car appealing. I actually caught myself gazing at the first pic, thinking how, from the A-pillar backward, it remindes me of a Mk V GTI. Wouldn't it be a laugh if this car was eventually offered with a turbo, on either the 2WD or AWD platform? Then it could go up against the GTI or WRX, respectively.

I think lexuslover just has REALLY big thumbs, and those tiny tiny keys on a palm PRE are SMALL! LOL

Or, he's the laziest person alive and can't be bothered to spell out "that" instead of "dat".

misterfusion says:

For those of you who have seen his TV show, it's obvious that Lexuslover2 is really Ali G!

Thanks to Scott Oldham for posting this information, because I've been curious about the improvements to the SX4 since reading about it on Edmunds Auto Observer. Too bad I need something with just a bit more cargo space!

lexuslover2 says:

02:03 AM, 07/20/09

dude surfwagon......is there anything wrong if i write "dat" instead of "that" or if i write "der" instaed of "there"...u moron...if u cant understand english den its not ma fault..

The new SX-4 sedan looks quite nice too. Someone in my apartment complex has one, complete with great looking 17" or 18" rims. I was pretty impressed.

As for lexuslover, he is even more eviler then Skeletor!

firstwagon says:

lexuslover2

You're right, that was lame... I'll try to think of something funnier.

"u moron...if u cant understand english den its not ma fault.."

Sooner or later you be out of high school and you'll want to buy that Lexus. How will you get a job to pay for it with every second word on your resume spelled wrong?

isaacl says:

08:56 AM, 07/20/09

wow, (as the owner of a '06 Vibe) I have always looked at SX4's with interest....and now I too am impressed with just where Suzuki is taking the little things. Thats a step in the right direction at least in my little-wagon-loving heart.

lexuslover2 says:

09:27 AM, 07/20/09

dude...i already own a lexus gs460 n u know what... its of no use arguing with people like u beacuse you guyz are big time loosers n idont wanna waste ma time arguing with loosers...

Uh oh, firstwagon you just got served.

firstwagon says:

OK, if you say so.

dougtheeng says:

11:09 AM, 07/20/09

zomg firstwagon just back down, its not worth it man. That guy is straight from the ghetto and you can't even deal with that.

tcd223 says:

12:00 PM, 07/20/09

Wait I'm confused. Why would you live in the ghetto but drive a 50+K car? Something does not add up.

surfwagon56 says:

12:39 PM, 07/20/09

Yeah lexuslover, don't waste your time with us. Hooked on Phonics (or is it ebonics) is waiting.

As a person with a M.Ed., I can understand English well, thank you very much. What you write is not English, though.

An expensive car does not a civilized person make.

m_thrizzle says:

"i already own a lexus gs460 n u know what..."

Corrected: "My parents already own a lexus gs460 n u know what...they drive me around in it"

"its of no use arguing with people like u beacuse you guyz are big time loosers n idont wanna waste ma time arguing with loosers..."

lexuslover, looser is an adjective and cannot be pluralized. If you are going to try to insult someone get it right, loser. You are worse than the guy holding the "Moran" sign.

aloysius_vampa says:

02:39 PM, 07/20/09

@lexuslover2: lol.
@Mr.Oldham: This is really cool news. It sounds like a great car. AWD + the six speed manual would be even better.
