A funny thing happened last time I took the FX50 for service. Several advisors and techs came out to look at our FX. I asked "what's the matter?" fearing a fire or a flat tire. Our service advisor answered "This is the first 50 some of us have seen, plus yours is an S." Apparently most FX buyers are getting the FX35.
That got me thinking about how rare cars of the past are almost always more desirable to collectors. What do you think, is an FX50 really that rare - will an FX50 S ever cross the auction block alongside cars like the G8 GXP or Buick GNX in the distant future or will vehicles like this be seen as just another car?

4 door sedans tend to be less collectable than 2 door coupes. Taking that axiom to its logical extension, crossovers ought to be as collectable as used food.

Maybe the FX50 is uglier than the FX35? Oh wait, no they're both really ugly.

I think the cars that will be sought after will be ones that are also actually desirable and rare. I don't know about a groundswell of people actually wanting this car. This is why if I could afford it, I'd get a Ford GT as a collectible that I drive every day. Rarity =/= collectibility. Just ask the 1958 Edsel with a V8 and a 3 speed I almost bought a few years back. Not worth much then and not worth much now. Haven't seen another like it, though.

Nahhh. The FX50, even the S version, will not be collectible.

They sold 12,079 FX35s in 2008. This was the previous generation design. Approximately 1 in 10 stepped up to the V8 FX45, so approximately 1,200 FX45s were sold. If the numbers are similar for the new FX50s, then they are pretty rare.

I don't think I've seen a single FX50. Our intention was to snag one of these over the FX35, but the lease was a bit on the pricey side. Nice vehicle though.

Nothing a collector would want in it even though it is rare.

I saw an FX50S in Denver last weekend, I liked it a lot, but I don't think any SUV will be a collectable.

I think the FX50S will in 10-20 year become the center of a Top gear episode where the crew is given 1000 pounds and one of them buys this.
"but I don't think any SUV will be a collectible."

The only SUV that could collectible would be Ford's now long gone Excursion just simply because it was the biggest baddest SUV of them all.

Perhaps a high-performance variant such as the SRT8 Jeep will be mildly collectible, but... probably not.

I look out for these vehicles just because I hate them so much and I'm curious to see what sort of person buys them. I've seen 3-5.

Well Doug, we FX owners are very happy and satisfied with our cars and therefore unlikely to be the type who are so concerned with drivers of cars we don't like.
You are very blatant for your hate of the FX through many of these posts. I am sure that you chose and bought the car based on the priorities you needed. I am sure the same can be said for us FX drivers. Deal with it, you may become a happier person.

It is a little odd how some people will go so far as to say they hate a car and then gawk at those who buy the car. Someone is either a little jealous or has too much time on their hands!!

I feel that people who go for such "un-roomy" SUV/crossovers/whatevers tend to want them for the style. In the Boston area, I have seen Grand Cherokee SRT8's probably twice as often as FX45's and no FX50's yet. Heck, i've seen a lot more Cayenne Turbo's than the FX45 (AWD and ground clearance are so desirable up here ...).
I don't see how this vehicle could be a collector's item -- nothing innovative, shape is not that different from the previous generation (which I thought was quite unique and striking, like it or not), and certainly its rarity does not seem to be due to price or availability.

I'm jubilant, don't you worry yourself. I'm sure people believe they "need" this vehicle but I tend to sit on the other side of the fence. Regardless, my posts on this vehicle often concern its looks. Its an OPINION, so chillax. If you're happy with your decision then you shouldn't have to defend yourself by snapping at me.
k2rm says:

I never said anything about "need." I said "priorities." Big difference...
Yes, your's is just an opinion, one in which many disagree, so why do you care who buys them? And in general, why even care what another person needs?
We don't need big screen tvs, single family homes, pleasure boats, air conditioning, mp3 players, vacations to hawaii, and other luxuries. Do you pass judgement on people with those "luxuries" as well, or just people who don't agree with your car buying choices?
I aknowledge I am singleing you out with these questions, but many people on this board seem to think they know best what other people drive based on need.

"I am sure that you chose and bought the car based on the priorities you needed. I am sure the same can be said for us FX drivers."
k2rm: Thats what you said. imo, "priorities you needed" means the same as "need".
As for caring who buys what, I don't. I'm merely curious to learn about the demographics of the people who purchase various types of vehicles. Thats why my initial comment of "what sort of person" buys them was in regards to.
"Do you pass judgement on people with those "luxuries" as well, or just people who don't agree with your car buying choices? "
I don't think its an issue of passing judgment. Its an opinion which I'm fully entitled to state. I could throw all the same questions back at you: why do you care if people think its ugly, or if people don't see the relevance of this type of the vehicle?
k2rm says:

Correction noted. I should have said "... based on your priorities..." as that was my intent. I will be the first to admit I don't need the FX, but I sure do like driving it.
And, I never questioned your opinion about it being ugly. If I did that, I would have to respond to all of your other posts about the FX, which would wear out my keyboard :) It is very polarizing design indeed.
I only questioned your original post, which came across as very derogatory considering your use of "hate." I wasn't the only one who took it that way. If it wasn't meant to be, my apology.
This next part is clearly beyond this blog entry, but because you asked it here...
In terms of why I am concerned about people questining its relevance? I hate double standards... Its just simply annoying that the FX often gets called out on Edmunds for it's lack of practicallity when it has MORE cargo room and similar utility as their past beloved X5. Yes, the X5 had a useless third row and higher towing capacity, but if either of those were a priority, I doubt either vehicle would be on one's shopping list. Even though both vehicles are so similar, was the X5 ever called "completely useless" or "patently ridiculous" by Edmunds staff like the FX was? Nope.

Fair enough, no worries. I'll be the first to acknowledge that vehicle appearance is a very personal choice and I find myself to be pretty picky.
"I only questioned your original post, which came across as very derogatory considering your use of "hate." I wasn't the only one who took it that way. If it wasn't meant to be, my apology."
I didn't mean for it to be derogatory to the owners of such vehicles, and I didn't mean to question their decision. I was trying to imply that I look at the demographics. Sorry for the confusion.
