2009 Hyundai Genesis: Can't Find What's Missing

hyundai-genesis-rear-555.jpg

I spent the weekend driving our long-term 2009 Hyundai Genesis, determined to find a luxury feature that the Korean sedan does not have.

Heated and cooled seats, check. Distance to empty, check. iPod connection, check. Rear backup camera, check. Every where I looked it was check, check, check.

Until I stopped at the gas station this morning before heading to the car wash.

While the fuel was pumping, I walked around to see if the trunk needed to be vacuumed. I felt around under the decklid for a touch-pad release. And nothing!

Alas, poor Genesis owners will just have to make due with two trunk release methods: the button in the driver's door, and the one on the key fob.

You guys vacuum??

Kelly, there IS a button on the trunk lid. It is under that chrome strip. It is a rubberized button shaped like a bubble.

How about the cooling feature for the passenger's seat or blind spot monitoring.

carfreak8394 says:

Or adaptive cruise control? How about heated rear seats? I'm sure I'll be able to think of more.

Under the H, there's a button. Don't feel bad. I had the car a month before I figured it out.

$2.93 for regular?!
From this past Sunday?
Ouch...

canadia says:

02:52 PM, 07/27/09

It also lacks the Gentleman Function, which, for me, is a dealbreaker.

tjpark01 says:

02:57 PM, 07/27/09

canadia, get over yourself, this isn't a 100k car.

prosource1 says:

03:09 PM, 07/27/09

....But it has a Lexicon!! How many luxury makes can say they have this and a sub $40k price?

Priorities.

brn says:

Can't find luxury features that it's missing?

Apparently, it's flawless? The lack of a decklid release is the exception that proves the rule?

Y'all couldn't be more blinded by this vehicle.

wobbly_ears says:

03:29 PM, 07/27/09

@brn,

What many are saying that Genesis seems to strike a fine balance between most luxury features & price. When you're paying thousands less for a luxo barge, you don't mind missing some exotic feature.

And besides, see all the troubles the BMW and Audis in the LT fleet are giving. I don't seem to recall Genesis ever having a trouble.

vt8919 says:

tjpark01, I beleive canadia was using sarcasm.

----

Similar to what brn said, it seems the only real complaints people have with this vehicle are merely subjective, for example, "It kinda looks like...".

They'd probably sell more here in the northeast if it came with optional AWD, though.

Mad_Science says:

I find the absence of an on-trunk trunk button hard to believe.

Also: you forgot the 3rd release mechanism: the (government mandated) *in*-truck glow in the dark release.

pat1usmc says:

Like wobbly_ears and tjpark said, there IS a button, its underneath the H.

mercedesfan says:

I can think of a boatload of "luxury" features that the Genesis doesn't even offer. In fact, there is nothing the Genesis brings to the table that one couldn't get on a Camry, 6, etc. Judged on feature content alone the Genesis is hardly a luxury car.

Having said that, the presentation of the features the Genesis does have, along with the quality in which they are executed clearly expresses luxury. Money went to the quality of materials rather than high-technology, and I applaud Hyundai for that decision.

ktoepke says:

04:25 PM, 07/27/09

Thanks to all who have pointed out the elusive trunk button under the "h". I thought I felt every place there was to feel, but obvisouly I missed it.

I'm driving the car again tonight, so I'll definitely check it out when I leave the office.--Kelly

mercedesfan,

just because the Genesis doesn't have active bolsters like your S-Class, doesn't mean it's a bad car. (; Just kidding. By the way, how's the search going for a replacement for your S550 going?

billt9 says:

05:29 PM, 07/27/09

I know wha'ts missing. The first picture looks like a Toyota Avalon or something. What? It's suppose to be luxury?

benson2175 says:

05:50 PM, 07/27/09

The one luxury item it's missing is the badge.

stovt001 says:

06:30 PM, 07/27/09

I can think of many luxury features it doesn't have, many already pointed out here (blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rear seat DVD players) none of which I care about and none that you would expect at this price point.

billt9 says:

06:39 PM, 07/27/09

I would totally expect a head-up display in a luxury car. A can't-live-without-feature.

gdmstrb says:

06:42 PM, 07/27/09

stovt001: The Taurus offers a lot of that stuff at a similar price point, actually it offers everything and then some.

brn says:

07:31 PM, 07/27/09

I think wobbly_ears is poking me with a stick. ;)

wetwilly says:

10:42 PM, 07/27/09

To be fair, most of the "missing" luxury stuff is only missing from the US version of the car. Air suspension, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise, power rear seats with separate audio controls, blind spot cameras, and more are available on the Korean Genesis.

bimmerjay says:

11:06 PM, 07/27/09

I think the Gentleman Function is also on the Korean Genesis.

It's also common for Japanese and Euro-market cars to offer significantly more content than their American counterparts.

fuzzynuke says:

My button is to the right side of H, and its a pretty big one, cant miss it.

wobbly_ears says:

"...I think wobbly_ears is poking me with a stick. ;)"

Afraid of a fight, you sissy!! ;)

ishtarbgl says:

Personally, I think the Genesis is offering a pretty good balance of luxury vs cost. Since you mentioned the trunk though the one thing I've thought the Genesis should always have is a trunk that opens completely by the push of a button. It doesn't mean it has to have a motor and close by the push of a button as well, just open. I wouldn't think the cost to incorporate this option would be much.

crowb says:

07:36 AM, 07/28/09

brn, you're a good sport about it though ;)

stingray454 says:

07:53 AM, 07/28/09

It's also missing a passenger side cooled seat, as pointed out earlier. That's a bit ghetto to only cool the driver's side.

fuhteng says:

08:16 AM, 07/28/09

Careful wobbly! You are angering the car Gods by pointing out how well the Korean or Vietnamese or Chilean (where is Hoon-dai from again?) car is holding up versus the American, Japanese and German cars.

mercedesfan says:

10:06 AM, 07/28/09

@carfreak8394-

It's coming along, slowly. So far I have driven a 750Li, 550i, LS460L, A8L, and the 2010 E550. Right now the new E is by far my favorite, but the Audi is right up there (which makes me angry because I still don't trust Audis and didn't want to like it). I still have a few more to look at so it will be a few more weeks before I really make a decision. Thanks for asking though. :)

wobbly_ears says:

11:50 AM, 07/28/09

@mercedesfan

Why not Genesis? No, I'm not trying to pull your leg. It appears that you have reasources to afford some really nice cars & you obviously have had Euro cars before.

Why not take a chance & trying a Genesis for few months?

Hey, we all live once!

fuhteng says:

01:39 PM, 07/28/09

mercedesfan - don't forget the Panamera too. Of course, I can't come close to affording one, but if I could, the photos of the interior and the fun of even the base model would be tempting to at least check out.

mercedesfan says:

05:20 PM, 07/28/09

@wobbly_ears

I did actually think about looking into the Genesis, but I have gotten too spoiled. The Hyundai simply lacks most of the features that I have really come to appreciate. The lack of adaptive cruise control is the real killer for me. With as much highway driving as I do that is a real God-send.

@fuhteng

The Panamera would certainly be cool, but I would have a hard time justifying to my wife paying more money for less power and fewer features. It is also a lot less practical for carting around my young daughter.

toye says:

Mercedesfan:
2010 Genesis will have the adaptive cruise control and touch screen navigation @ MotorTrend.
If you can wait a couple of months it's worth your wait
