2009 Audi S5: By a Landslide

car-of-the-week-banner.jpg 800 S5 f34 tree.jpg

It's official: The 2009 Audi S5 is the best-looking car in our long-term test fleet. Or so says the die-hard porch dwellers at my corner coffee shop, Java Joe's.

And the "voting" wasn't even close. The 2009 Audi S5 won by a landslide.

Disagree? Here's photographic evidence...

I vote 2002 M3.

I don't get it.. it looks like a Camry Solara to me. The front grill looks very sharp though.

Camry Solara? Are you blind?

I agree with powell... That car is fantastic. And I can see the relation but the solara is still pretty different. I just think the back of this car doesnt look right for some reason

Pretty dull. I prefer the G37 coupe. Or, for S5 money, a Corvette.

2002 M3 is nicer looking, IMO. I also love the Challenger but I know that's extremely subjective.

Red doesn't really do this car justice. Needs to be white....

iancar says:

Best in Insideline lot, but I think the E550 Coupe looks much better.

Wow... People working for Edmunds IL need to get an eye exam or stop drinking the Audi Kool-aid...

Yeah the S5 is not a bad looker but it is bland and nothing to write home about. Without the excellent pseudo 5-spoke rims then it got NOTHING...

toxic_science says:

Obviously the naysayers haven't seen one in person. Pictures do not do it justice. You just can make out 3 dimensional curves on a 2d Pic.

smudge12 says:

I thought it was pretty bland when I first saw it in pictures (still do) and didn't get the hype. But the two times I've seen an A5 in person, I've been stunned. Beautiful car. It definitely has presence.

compliance says:

Toxic_science knows the deal. This is not a photogenic car, but in person it's drop dead sexy. First time I saw one in person I was totally confused by what it was. The subtlety doesn't come through pictures. No one is confusing it for a Solara when it rolls up though.

huyracing says:

this car turns my head everytime i see it on the street... the only other thing to do that are exotics.

dougtheeng says:

no offense to louiswei, but I love how everytime an editor says they like a vehicle, suddenly they're 'drinking the Kool-Aid'.

ridiculous.

The first photo I saw of this car was a direct side angle and I said it looked like a GTO from that angle. The photo above also makes it look quite generic. But as others have noted, it is a show stopper in person. The only other car I've seen do such a dramatic 180 from photo to real life is the new Jag XFR. Both are truly stunning in motion.

trentor says:

To reiterate what others have said, this car won by a landslide for a reason. It is truly a work of art in person. I literally went out of my way a few blocks to follow one the first time I saw one on the street. Beauty on wheels. In pictures...ehhh...it's average I guess.

Also Dan, that's a great photo. That's funny. I don't care who you are.

This car looks much more beautiful in person than by photograph I have noticed. Plus the BMW M3, looks just like a BMW 3 series with a body kit. Granted this looks the same scenario with the A5, but the A5 is also good looking, where as the BMW 3 series, looks too common.

bimmerjay says:

I'll echo the comments about how this car looks in pictures versus in person. It's gorgeous in the flesh. One of my neighbors has a tinted-out white one and I just can't stop looking at it every time I see it.

The S5 comes in second only because of the e46 m3.

It's not that this car is ugly, it's just that it's boring. Audi in the past had styling so clean it was bold (the old A6 or TT) , but this just looks like a generic car with a generic corporate grill slapped on the front. If this was a sedan and the headlights weren't so tacky, I'd say "wow, I appreciate how clean it is" , but it's like they got halfway through designing it and said "NO, we need that giant Audi nose on the front end, and BMW has these trick headlights so we need something as well!"

I don't buy it.

Ditto that....But BMWs are a snore also MB seems to me slightly bolder...there are so few really interesting looking new cars out there.

I'd agree that photos don't do the S5 justice! I've seen it in person many times and always a head turner in a good way. Looks great from every angle and the low profile roofline gives it a very exotic sports car look. Seeing it from behind with the big fat tires, quad exhaust and low profile silhouette makes it a WINNER! Has anyone seen the interior? This car has one of the best interiors on the market bar none.

Good looking car, however, I don't like how Audi recently are combining the signal light and brake light on the same bulb, like how the American cars always do.

When people say the M3 looks better I would love to know which M3 they are talking about. Most M3s dont even turn heads. The average person cant even tell the difference between an M3 and a normal 3 series.

hondacura4 says:

The E46 M3 is a DAMN good looking car especially with the optional 19's. The overall design seems to have more personality and athleticism vs the S5.

However, I think the Audi overall has considerably more road presence, a meaner stance yet comes up short in substance. Given the S5's price and glorious V8 it just didn't deliver what I expected while the E46 did. Were my expectations too high?

hondacura4 says:

That character line on the side of the S5 always (for some reason) reminded me of the Bently Azure.

skurny says:

I have an A5 and I can't tell you how many times I've come back to the car and found people looking at it. It definitely catches peoples attention.

scorp76 says:

I will never understand the appeal of this boring, bland, overrated car. I pass an audi dealership daily, so yeah, I've seen it in person, and I still call boring and plain. The one or two I've seen actually on the road didn't warrant a second glance either. I wouldnt go so far as to say it's ugly, though it does have some ugly angles, but it's definitely riding a hype-train.

scorp76 says:

11:37 PM, 07/ 8/09

"Most M3s dont even turn heads."

Assume much? I would say the now very familiar E46 rightfully turns more heads to this day than this overrated thing ever will.

mopho says:

I don't find it beautiful from any angle, even in person. It does have presence, though.
