2009 Audi A4 Avant: Best-Looking Wagon Ever?

2009-audi-a4-avant-at-night.jpg

Whenever I look at our long-term 2009 Audi A4 Avant, I think, "Well, that's it, no one else should ever bother trying to build a wagon, because it will never look this good."

The styling of the A4 wagon pulls me in every time I get the key to it. I don't quite care for the driving experience, you see. Although I like the way the car grips through corners, the combination of the 2.0T engine and six-speed automatic is fairly uninspiring in normal traffic (acceleration is fine, but a tabletop torque band can only keep you interested for so long). So whatever excitement I'm feeling about the bodywork begins to dissipate as soon I'm in the Audi.

But as soon as I get out, I'm bubbling over with enthusiasm once again. Is there a better looking wagon out there? I think not.

I'll agree that it's a great looking car, but I'm also partial to the 2008/2009 Outback wagon. I'd be happy owning either.

The modern Audi wagons (both A4 and A6) are beautiful cars, and I'd rather the wagon over their sedan counterparts. I can't say the same for BMWs offerings (mostly because of the lame engine in the 328i.)

Actually, all Audi "avants" dating back to the 5000/200 of the late 80s were great looking cars!

Right family, wrong sister. The A6 wagon is a magnitude more beautiful than the A4 estate.

It is great looking, however I'd still take my E46 wagon w/sport pkg. over this. It still gets a lot of complements, even though it's 9 years old.

The Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon.

I completely agree. Personally, the sacrifice it makes in cargo space over the previous A4 Avant is worth every cubic foot. It's a great looking car.

mercedesfan says:

I think it's great looking from the rear 3/4 view, but the front end is terribly over-styled. I just can't stand the front fascias of modern Audis and I don't really know why.

Either way, I think my wife's E63 wagon is pretty nice looking too. I still think the Audi has an edge in looks, but in terms of performance, practicality, and interior quality it isn't even close. Benz all the way.

Out of the Audi wagons, I do think that the A6 looks better than the A4. In my opinion, the A6 looks better proportioned than the A4.

My vote for best wagon, though, has to go to the BMW M5 wagon.

I agree with hispd4fun.

The E63 is sex on wheels.

Audi builds the best looking wagons, period. I still feel my B6 Avant is still one of the best looking cars on the road.

The B8 is probably the best looking wagon in production today. I haven't seen it in the flesh though.

Other beautiful Avants:

RS2
RS4 Biturbo
RS6 V10 Avant
RS6 V8 Avant
S6 AVant

Of all time? I'd have to go with the RS6 V10.

Just on looks alone, the Magnum is hard to beat for a wagon. Family utility with kick-ass styling.

Unfortunately, its a MOPAR car so its beauty is probably only skin deep.

Great looking ride. Had a bi-turbo V-6 Audi Allroad
which I called an A6 on steroids. Really great driving in winter. Blizzards are a no problem. Audi does indeed make functional, great looking wagons. In comparison - The Dodge Magnum is good looking but has terrible visibility. An 08 Passat Lux wagon has replaced the Allroad. The lovely n enchanting Mrs loves it. No lie - me too. Great mileage, smooth ride, great looks, well optioned, great price. Side by side to the Allroad the wheel base looks like the same size. Larger A4 does look great. I think adjustable suspension is a needed option for the winter states. Go Audi!!

The previous-generation A4 was better-looking than the current car. The late Mazda6 wagon was my favorite; I would have bought one if it had been available without the gas-sucking V6. The A4 Jetta wagon was nicer, as was the B5 Passat. The mid-90s BMW 5-series "Touring" was also better-looking.

The A4 might qualify as best-looking currently available in the US market, but "best ever"?--I don't know that it would even make my top 10. And since it has so little usable cargo space for a wagon, I wouldn't consider buying one over the sedan, because cargo space is the raison d'etre for buying a wagon; plus, the sedan is still available without Quattro.

It's nice in a swoopy weird I-don't-really-want-to-be-a-full-wagon kind of way. But I've always loved wagons. I'll agree with bc1960 that the last gen A4 was better looking--it was more classically proportioned and less gimmicky. However, I'll also add that I've always thought the recent Volvo V50 was my favorite wagon ever. It's crisp, taut, distinctive, makes no apologies for being a wagon, and has the cargo space a wagon should have.

@audipilot: I'm with you! sign me up for that M5 wagon!

then again, that M3 wagon might be enough for my two retrievers...

A better looking wagon? My first car was a tan 1983 Dodge Aries wagon - that's tough to beat!

For looks the Audi scores high but I'd still take the Kid's Heart Skyline GT-R Wagon that was had a article here on Edmunds.

anyhow, my votes are:

- RS6 V10
- RS6 V8 bi-turbo
- CTS Wagon (from the pics, it might take the cake)... dare I hope fot a CTS-V Wagon?????

Volvo V50 is the best-looking one. Every time I look at mine, it puts a smile on my face. Like @huisj said, it's nice looking in a classic-proportioned kind of way, yet is has crisp, tight, modern lines. Most wagons these days try too hard to hide their wagon-ness with the sloped back end, defeating their utility.

detroitbandit says:

You guys obviously have not seen a CTS Wagon on the road yet. That is a truly great looking wagon.

phreddkark says:

Its nice, but I dig the look of the '08 and '09 Subaru Outbacks. Rugged, yet classy.

I don't think ANYBODY has seen a CTS Wagon on the road.

audisport says:

I've seen the CTS wagon on the road and it does look sweet. Nice proportions, nice presence.

Other sweet wagons as noted above.

1. E63 Wagon
2. Dodge Magnum SRT-8
3. M5 Wagon
4. RS6 Avant
5. B8 A4 Avant

billybobbovine says:

B6 A4 wagons are my fave wagons, probably closely followed by the previous gen V70R wagon...mm mm mmmmm

bimmerjay says:

There's a 2009 A4 Avant 2.0T with the S-Line package and 19" wheels that always snugs up near my car far away in the corner of the garage at my office. It's the same color as the Edmunds LT car, and it looks positively gorgeous. I can't help but look at every time. I wish the performance would back up the looks - that would put me in an Audi.

audisport says:

09:31 AM, 07/31/09

bimmerjay, wait until they replace the 3.1L V6 with the supercharged 3.0L.

blueguydotcom says:

Nice looking car. Boring to drive. Even with a bigger engine it's still saddled with FWD or Audi's horrible AWD system.

stingray454 says:

The CTS wagon is close, and I always thought the Magnum looked great.

300td says:

maybe a little biased, but I say the mercedes benz w123 td was a timeless classic.

m_thrizzle says:

The Chrysler 300C Touring sold in Europe looks pretty good. It is a Magnum w/ a 300 face and it really transforms the car.

The M5 Touring looks pretty good too, and the outgoing Legacy GT wagon wasn't bad either. I'd like to see more wagons and especially some with sticks. But alas, this is the US and stupid Americans don't like either of those things.

nosubstitute says:

Best looking wagon ever? How old are you, six?

How about the Chevy Nomad? (actually, the conversation ends there).

But if one were to continue, the list of wagons that shred the Audi include at least:

Citroen DS? Original Ford Taurus? Olds Cutlass Cruiser? Chevy Vega?

And just about any genuine woody. Check these out:

Ok, I know this probably makes me weird, but my favorite wagon (and in my eyes, the best looking) is the Volvo XC70. The 08's and newer, although the 01-07 is pretty nice as well.

mlh says:

04:21 PM, 07/31/09

Volvo P1800ES.

Look it up.

vvk says:

07:59 AM, 08/ 3/09

mlh, I agree 100%. P1800ES is just out of this world.

Audi A4 Avant is nice looking but seems pretty plain and conventional in comparison.

hurls65 says:

10:46 AM, 08/ 3/09

I liked the looks so much I got one :), but I think the interior is really the best part of this (and most audis)

@ cartester16, I like the E46 wagon too (that's my car, the audi's my wife's), but I don't think it's even close to the A4 Avant in the looks department. Better handling though :)

204meca says:

11:17 PM, 08/ 9/09

I have always been a fan of wagons & gotta admit the A4 Avants are tought to beat. But for best of show I would have to pick Volvo's 1800 ES also. Runners up include does Mazda P3 (has classic wagon line with a little, Volvo V50 & Chevy Vega.
