2008 Pontiac G8 GT: Fresh Meats

G8 Stokes.jpg

As Dan Edmunds said back when the 2008 Pontiac G8 was our Car of the Week, the rear tires were dead and gone and needed immediate replacement. And by immediate, we meant right after we had some more fun with worthless rubber.

Anyway, a new set 245/40R19 Bridgestone Potenza REO50As ran us, including installation and tax, $684.67 and took just about an hour from the time we called until we drove off with new shoes.

I can't figure out why the fronts were fine and the rears were so worn down.

At that price this must have been just the rears, right?

Yeah, surely that can't be for a full set. They're $212 each with a quick check online, and that's surely cheaper than at the local tire store.

Mike, your rear tires were worn because it's a powerful rear-drive car..

I don't know why you need us to figure that out for you. Maybe you need to go back to nursery school?

Why didn't you guys get some other good (but cheaper!) tires? You had to do cross shopping didn't you?

Mr. Magrath, did you ever have the tires rotated during the G8's routine service visits?

m_thrizzle says:

25k miles is pretty good for how much you've smoked them. I know of people with summer tires that only get 10-15k out of their rears.

sodaguy, I'm not sure of this but the tires are probably staggered, meaning no rotations.

m_thrizzle - Nope, all four tires are the same size and the wheels are identical too. I don't think I have ever seen a post about the IL staff getting tires rotated though. I suppose it better reflects what the general public does with their vehicles. It does seem a shame though to not get the longest life out of a set of tires.

I don't think 25,000 miles is all that bad. That's all I could get out of the Bridgestones on my MS3, and I rotated them every 5,000 miles. The E39 540i SP cars also like to chew up tires.

Could you guys (Edmunds) explain why you buy certain
tires and how you compared them to the competition?

kissel1 -- this might come in handy:

sar•casm
1: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain
2 a: a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual b: the use or language of sarcasm

mlh - kissel1 is sort of special...like that kid that always rode on the very first seat of the bus when you were going to grade school. You know...special.

The price on these actually isn't that dramatically priced.. you would think with how much business you're giving them that they would offer them to you guys at a discount but apparently not.
