On my morning commute I had a white Audi RS4 in front of me stopped at a red light. A white Subaru WRX STI pulled up next to him in the right lane revving its engine.
The Audi pretty much ignored him. But I was wondering, who do you think would win this race? It was an older STI with the big wing.
Both cars sounded delicious.

If that STI wanted to play with the RS4. The STI probably had work done. RS4 wouldn't stand a chance. Both drivers being equal. That's my guess.

Well either that STI had work done or didn't know what it was up against. assuming both are stock, the RS4...duh. But if the STI had enough work done, it would probably blow the RS4 away.

Seemingly a wash...depends on who's more willing to thrash their machine. I'd bet on the sti driver for that.

I think the STI would've smoked him. The STI is smaller and lighter and I'm willing to bet that would've helped it get the upper hand.

Ultimately it would depend on the driver unless speeds got high then the power of the RS4 would take over. Check the 1/4 mi trap speeds, the RS4 is pulling way ahead. And crusiserhead1 is right. Who actually buys a car like an STI?

Stock for stock, RS4 kills the STI.
But a lightly modded STI (chip, exhaust) will probably edge the RS4.

Let's compare sales numbers of MY2008-2009 STIs vs. RS 4s. Who has 'em? I don't. Also why does "RS 4" have a space but "RS6" doesn't?

0-60, the STi. After 60, the RS4 pulls ahead, and crushes it over 100. STi's (and Evo's) fall on their face when the speedo gets north of 100. They are like short legged sprinters.
