'F, Marry and Kill?'
I'd say if you can't spell the word in this venue, you should probably not write the entry.
Tasteless.
cx7lover says:

Kill them all or be killed in them. These three are so undesirable. I'd be more into a Tata Nano.
jaguar36 says:

Kill the Focus, it's long past time that it was taken out behind the shed and shot. Marry the Fit, and uhh, F the Fit too? I have no interest in the Suzuki at all.
gjupp says:

I'd run away and join the preisthood.
But really, each one has it's place in society. They aren't bad cars, they just aren't for everybody. Focus is dated, Fit is clever yet small and unexciting, SX4 is well, not sure yet.
IMHO
F the Ford, K the fit, Marry the SX4.
jaeger1 says:

I'm with prosource1 - "tasteless" is about as kind a description I could come up with for the question posed.
The Fit would be my clear choice - not for the idioctic activities suggested, but for ownership. About the only other vehicle in its class that I would seriously consider is the Kia Soul - as long as it could be had without the glowing speakers.

Scott,
I am going to have to agree with prosource1 and jaeger1 on this one. At one point I believe you said that this is supposed to be a family friendly site, and the question posed certainly does not fit that description. I think that the lease, buy, abandon approach taken by one of your other editors is much more appropriate. Please cease with the middle-school antics and try to be a bit more professional and family friendly with the posts.

Jesus, how many children are reading this site -- AT ALL anyhow?
Maybe you heard the long term fleet is all the rage with the 13-17 demographic.

This is what's wrong with America these days. Everyone is so damn offended by everything.
If you are fearful of your children reading questionable material then monitor your kids while they're online or block this website.
Does everything have to be kid-friendly and safe?
It's not Scott Oldham's job to censor your kids, it's yours.
tra2883 says:

I agree with Oldham - Marry the Fit, kill the Focus, F the SX4...

I'm with the 'it's tasteless/crude' side. Unneeded, if you have to ask this way, you haven't come up with the right question. The question really is an insult to all women, forget offended kids.

Get NOW on this blog right NOW!!!!!!
jaeger1 says:

It's not that the post is inappropriate for children - put that red herring aside. It's that the post itself is juvenile, crude, tasteless and idiotic. The kind of cuss-word shock value that one would expect in maybe junior high.
Which CAR would I F??? Seriously???? Thankfully, this Beavis and Butthead blog entry stands out as a departure from the level of discussion normally found on inside line.
arumage says:

I just bought a Soul and opted not to go for the glowing speakers. Don't worry, its a great vehicle even without that gimmick :P

I think posts like this are hysterical. I think it's funny that you guys get so up in arms about it all. Yes, using F may be a little juvenile, but then again "Make love to, Marry, Kill" sounds strange. If you guys want to harp on juvenile behavior then question why there are two Evos in a long term test fleet.(not that I wouldn't do the same)
stephen987 says:
07:53 AM, 06/30/09
Yeah, the language is tasteless and crude. It's jarring to see a member of the Edmunds staff use such words, which are normally used only by readers.
Oh, and as for the initial question: I drove a new Fit and a new Civic yesterday. The Fit will definitely be asked for a second date. The Civic gets a fake name and a phone number with only six digits.
cx7lover says:

audisport says:

And how is this article offensive to women? There is no mention of sex. A woman could comment on here just the same.
But anyways, about the cars. I don't know if I hate the Suzuki or just the fact that its powder blue. I have actually never seen one on the road. The car seems to be packaged nicely though. I hate the way the Focus looks but hey it has SYNC! And gets decent gas mileage.

cocarguydj says:

audisport,
Let me make this very clear. I don't really expect this site or Scott to censor what my kids read. I was merely making the point that this post is extremely juvenile and referencing a quote from Scott himself in the comments section of an earlier post. In explaining what RTFM meant, he specifically stated that this is a family friendly site.
I am not offended by the use of the language specifically, but if you don't feel comfortable spelling it out the perhaps it is best to choose differnt words.
//end rant
I haven't driven any of the above mentioned cars, but from what I have read I would be most likely to flog the SX4 for the weekend, drive the Fit longer term and leave the Focus at the dealer at least until we get the European model stateside.
jaguar36 says:
08:13 AM, 06/30/09
Audisport - duh, everything is offensive to women.
m_thrizzle says:
08:24 AM, 06/30/09
Is 'Screw, marry, kill' better?
The point is what would you keep long-term, what would you drive for one day, and what would you want thrown into the crusher. While it may be juvenile when the subject is people, it's a fun game to play with cars without being offensive to people less sensitive than the nose of a bloodhound.
My initial reaction is to kill the Focus because it is ugly, outdated, and has a low-rent interior. However, it's still got some good moves on the dancefloor and I'd take it for a Sunday drive.
So I'd add an F to the ocus, kill the SX4, and marry the Fit. But I'd probably end up cheating on the Fit with a better, fuller figured car and end up divorcing it.
bwillz240 says:

ok so first of all: prosource1, jaeger1, and cocarguydj, you guys are so utterly ridiculous in saying this post is so "tasteless" its a game, relax and have some fun. if you're worried about being "family friendly" let me ask you, what families out there are so lame that dad says "hey everybody lets gather around the computer and read some blogs together!" i mean really... you sound like you must be those type of ppl who drive a prius around pissing off drivers all day and thinking you're helping the environment.
oh so naive...
canadia says:
08:50 AM, 06/30/09
@m_thrizzle
I'd be more worried about the Fit divorcing you, rather than vice versa. Also be warned: it may be entitled to half of your assets if that were the case. You may consider rolling it off a cliff in neutral if you do decide to take the course of infidelity.
bwillz240 says:
08:53 AM, 06/30/09
oh and i would F the fit, marry the sx4, and kill the focus. i've never liked the focus, i'd marry the sx4 cuz i'd like something with AWD, and i'd F the fit cuz tho it is fun to drive, it'd prolly get old after a while

Wow, its quite funny reading how offended you guys get.
Do you honestly think that this is the worse your kids will or have ever been exposed to? Send them out on the street.
Its pathetic, calm down its a game. Dont get your panties in a knot. Plus if your kid knows what RTFM or what just the letter F means, well then they obviously learned from someone else, maybe you. Think about that.
As for me.
F: Suzuki
Marry: Fit
Kill: Focus
pontneuf2503 says:
09:25 AM, 06/30/09
I agree bwillz240 here. While i admit the post is a tad vulgar, it's hard to deny its absurdity and, for that, it's really quite innocent. Let's be real here: what would you rather distract yourself at work with: another mundane post about how the black strip under the sx4's mirrors look bad or how its seats are 2.4 inches too short for editorxy's thighs, or an enthralling and interactive post like this? and who better to post it than the editor in chief? The wall street journal's blogosphere is more retrained, if that's what you're after.
And as for answering the question:
Kill the focus - it's probably enroute to a nervous breakdown, anyway. and if it doesn't look good now, aging won't do it any favors.
F the fit - i've heard it has a thing for junk in the trunk. not to mention a nice V...tec.
Marry the sx4 - thus, ensuring "sx4" life
sherief says:

ergsum says:
09:38 AM, 06/30/09
Boy, if these guys are offended about this, they better not read any of the photo caption contests! Come on it's only a single letter! Maybe "F" needs to be banned from the alphabet. "or sale, ord ocus, ront wheel drive, ull power, AM/M radio. $2,300 irm."
lug1115 says:
09:47 AM, 06/30/09
Anyone who has driven in any major metropolitan area in these United States has undoubtedly used "F" on more than one occasion, and used it to mean something a lot less pleasurable that what Mr. Oldham here is implying.
This is a blog about cars, not telly tubbies or jelly beans or anything else that might interest a four-year old. Lets get past the use of a single letter and get back to basics of discussing decidedly adult machines. And when I talk about adult topics, I use adult words.
Keep on truckin' Scott.
BTW - F the SX4, Marry the Fit, Kill the Focus.
chris80233 says:

F the Focus. It's cheap, trashy, but could be a fun ride.
Kill the Fit. Ugly, boring, everyone's got one.
Marry the SX4. Because it tries so hard to please and since nobody else wants her she's less likely to cheat on you (and the Italian body doesn't hurt either).
dw_fit says:

I am equally offended by this post. I'm 57 years old and I do not want to see this kind of language at Edmunds. If I wanted pottie mouths, I could go to Jalopnik or TTAC.
Class is what differentiates Edmunds from the other sites, at least that was true in the past. It is sad that you have to lower yourself to their levels.
I married the Fit but had a kean interest in the SX4. I owned a Focus before the Fit and it was a money pit. Ford won't fool me twice.

Wasn't the SX4 designed by Giugaro??
If so, then she must be like an Italian model.
Therefore:
F: SX4 - Who wouldn't F an italian model?
Marry: Fit - Seems fun and dependable, even for the long run.
Kill: Focus - does it really need an explanation?

I've been trying to think of where such a crude game would come from... and I came up with this thought...
A bunch af rednecks drinking in a bar checking out the girls and putting them into "categories". As the night goes on and all the girls leave (with other guys of course), they start the same game with cars.
At closing time they end up in the parking lot humping Honda's and shooting holes in the sides of Fords.
Sounds like so much fun, I almost wish my parents were related too.

I have been reading this blog for almost 3 years now and it has turned into one of my very favorite things to read. This thread is just tasteless and stupid. I am not offended or uptight or PC.....I just don't understand why one would post such a thing on a professional site like this. I cuss when it is needed (especially here on CA freeways) but really don't see the need to read it on this site. I find it amazing that posters be attacked just for stating their opinion that something is tasteless.

That sums it up quite nicely. The fact that so many wish to attack those that have pointed out the juvenile tackiness of this post is unsurprising. Flatulence-level humor does have broad appeal. I had thought Edmonds had aimed significantly higher, but perhaps I was wrong. Maybe we can look forward to the collective editorial opinion as to "The Car We'd Most Like to F!" as a wrap-up for 2009.
I do hope that this sort of rubbish will prove, going forward, to be a regrettable exception to what has been the rule of really excellent automotive discussion.
aloysius_vampa says:

It has been my experience that very little 'excellent automotive discussion' takes place in these blog postings, jaeger1. Perhaps mindless fanboyism is appealing to you, but it isn't to me.
I am not going to say that /no/ excellent discussion is to be had here -- that would be incorrect -- but it is hardly the norm.

Uptight readers: stop giving Europeans more reason to laugh at us and go take some of zoomzoom22's chill pills (health care coverage not required!).
F the SX4 til sunrise, marry the Fit, obliterate the Focus.
