Here are the fuel economy numbers for 2009. We've listed the best, worst and overall average tanks.
As always, we were missing a few cars that were out of town or unavailable at the time of this writing. I'll add them as they come in and I'll let you know in the comments.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: You guys aren't trying hard enough with the G8.
About a month ago, I was on pace for the worst tank I'd ever gotten. Figured I'd take a gander at the MPG rating (I run in metric being Canadian). Car was rating an 8.7 MPG. Then the low gas reminder came on.
Best $70 I ever spent.

There are way too few Average-Joemobiles in this fleet...

The Audi S5 appears to be doing well! My G35 only gets around 18-19 mpg, just like the 370Z, but the Audi gets similar with a V8? Gimme some of that!

I love the fact that the TDI not only outperforms the Smart in every dynamic area, it also beats it in fuel economy.

I think the huge spread between best and worst mileage is the most interesting.
I think it shows how meaningless the question "so what mileage does it get?" is.
One guy could be getting high 30's in his Fit while another guy is getting mid 20's and they are both correct.
Same with the G8. You could be getting 12 mpg and telling everyone "look how awful V8s are" or you could be getting 24 mpg and bragging "my full size V8 car can match little econo boxes".
Much more interesting then the average which is just the average for people who drive in the same traffic, in the same climate and with the same style.

Ford Focus SES 40+mpg and 16+mpg worse ? How did that happen ?

i find the jetta tdi vs. smart car result startling. besides finding parking, how can anyone justify the purchase of a smart car?? is it just for attention or "saving the earth"?
firstwagon says:

Well a Smart bases $10,000 less then a Jetta TDI for one thing.

My R/T ia showing 19.3 on mostly city driving.
She is Automatic. Love that MDS!
But when I want to, I get all that Hemi to SCREAM!!

@firstwagon: totally agree
The largest spread seems to be with the Cadillac CTS with a best of 32.5 mpg and a worst of 9.9 mpg.

I look at the best to worst MPG chart as the "fun factor chart." Less MPG = More Fun.

It amazes me that the '09 M3, with its tiny little V-8, gets such horrible fuel economy. So much for technology... the old school pushrod V-8's killed this thing in terms of fuel efficiency for horsepower.
With Obama & Co.'s 35.5 MPG CAFE requirement coming up, and this thing a full 20 MPG off of that mark, I think the days of the M3's V-8 are short lived.
Wasn't BMW touting this engine as more fuel efficient than the '02's I-6?
drmillerM3 says:

How did you guys manage to only get 9.6 mpg on one tank of gas on the '09 M3. I know for a fact that you JUST got out of break-in period.
So you're telling me that you got 9.6 mpg without exceeding 4,000rpms? I think not. LOL, Tisk tisk tisk Edmunds.

The short answer is no, they Never said that.
The reason for the lack of fuel economy is mostly highly variant on how the car is driven. The more intoxicating cars tend to be driven at several clips faster than the lame cars. However, they shouldn't have been pushing the car near as hard as they were; Read my post above.
The M3 isn't really inefficent. Watch Top Gear's Fuel Economy Episode where the M3 destroys the Prius in an on-track MPG comparison.
...And no, the M3 will never be short-lived, ever. If you need a reference, please see e30, e36, e46, etc.
The one thing I fail to comprehend is your addiction of continually posting on a car that obviously don't understand the essence of, nor like. To each his own though; stick to your vettes.

The M3s mileage is really disappointing considering its size and weight. How is it less efficient than the G8?

I'm really shocked that they never added a Subaru Forester since the redesign and it has gotten SUV of the year awards and stuff.
or how about adding a hyundai elantra
or adding a nissan cube... or... you guys have no pick em up truck!!! where is the new Ram?

all of those numbers are expected, if surprising in a good way. it seems like each is getting around or better what it should be. the Evo and 09 M3 are disappointing though.

Hey - what happened to the 135i? Did you guys sell it already?
And having come from Germany, where I paid $6.00+ per gallon of gasoline, $4.00/gal sounds cheap, frankly.
tcd223 says:

You should get a GT3 RS and tell us if its a livable daily driver. Forget what regular people would buy. Whose gonna come to an enthusiasts site to read about the amazing storage capacity of the Mazda 3?
Wouldn't it be easier to find someone you know who has "something regular people actually buy?" You might even be able to get a test drive out of it. A blog like this should be about cars we aspire to own.

Also, I too am surprised and annoyed that you guys never added a Subaru Forester to the fleet. That would be an interesting and sensible addition.
The 7 series and M3 are there for your sake, not ours, and are absolutely ridiculous cars to have in the fleet.

-"The 7 series and M3 are there for your sake, not ours, and are absolutely ridiculous cars to have in the fleet."
Why? Lol, I have a 7 series and an M3. Sounds like you need a better job..... and a refresher on who the average end user is. Not everyone's budget is limited to a Kia.
Besides, what's their to learn about a sub $25k car? It's going to have slightly poor interior quality, it's typically reliable, and is a good choice for someone looking for a somewhat reliable and boring commuter car. There, I covered about 100 cars for you. Pick the one that's the least ugly, or the most green, or whatever moves you.
