If you have any interest at all in the imminent arrival of Fiat in the U.S. under the umbrella of the reborn Chrysler Corporation (or is it the other way around?), you don't have to look further than the Suzuki SX4.
The SX4 is the product of a co-development project with Fiat, and the plant in Hungary that assembles this Suzuki for Europe also builds the Fiat Sedici. This Fiat is the most popular all-wheel-drive crossover in Italy. (Sedici translates as "sixteen"; 4x4, get it?)
So it's no surprise that the Suzuki's elegantly drawn exterior and practical yet stylish interior look as if they're straight from one of the leading design houses in Italy, as Giorgetto Giugaro's ItalDesign did the work.
Compared to the turgid appearance of pseudo-crossovers like the Dodge Caliber and Kia Rondo, the SX4 is a miracle of good taste. It makes practicality seem smart instead of cheap. It's Italian.
More small vehicles that look as good as the Suzuki SX4 would be a good thing.

SX4 is a well-kept secret in today's marketplace. Good design, decent engine, good warranty.
But it is associated with the Suzuki name. Once a venerable name in US auto market, it is now saddled with a sullied reputation courtesy of GM (Forenza anyone?). 'Blessed' by GM and with a rapidly shrinking dealer network, I don't have much hope for Suzuki in US.
Or, they might surprise us by bringing the Swift, Alto/A-Star & reclaiming the small-car king title.

The SX4 is a great small car but I don't think the look is that great. It's OK, nothing more, nothing less.
I think that VW has a great looking small car with the Golf/GTI, and Mazda with the 3 hatch.

Actually I take that Mazda part back, the front end of the new 3 is a but much. I forgot about that.

I would rather have a but much than hopelessly bland. The SX4 is even more of a yawner in Fiat clothing.

Well before you think Suzuki's terrible reputation was because of GM forcing their crummy Daewoo products on Suzuki, remember the Geo Metro was a Suzuki Swift.
Suzuki well earns their reputation as the worst automaker in America.

The SX4 is a great looking little car, certainly better then many other small offering - Mazda3, Versa, Fit, Aveo, etc.

@mikeolan
I don't think Geo Metro was a bad product for it's time. It was a cheap commuter car for students & people of limited means (a category most automakers seem to have forgotten these days). It served it's purpose well.
Heck, wasn't it just last year that a decade old Geo Metro's were going for over 7k when gas hit 4 bucks a gallon??

No, another failure for you. Aveo and Versa MAYbe. Available AWD doesn't make it better than all other small cars you fool.

Your consistent stupidity is astounding. Stop blindly defending your pet-brand and read: I was commenting on looks alone. Last time I checked, AWD doesn't improve the look of a vehicle.

I think your stupidity is amazing, baiting is just too easy. However, where in my post did I mention a brand that I liked better than all that you mentioned?

I keep seeing ads of the SX4 getting compared to the Mini Cooper.
They probably should try to compare to the Fit or Caliber instead...

lol CX7 - the only two posts you have taken offense to claimed the SX4 was nicer looking then the new Mazda3. It doesn't take a genius to make the connection as to why you're getting so defensive.
And what you call 'baiting' I call 'completely misreading and failing to comprehend my post'.

It seems "turgid" is another word that doesn't mean what you think it does, if you lump the relatively clean Rondo in with the Caliber and hold up the rather busy SX4 as less turgid--this is not one of ItalDesigns best efforts, although it lacks the complete what-were-they-thinking vibe of DaimlerChrysler's designs.

It seems like Fiat has shown its worse attribute in the SX4. The LT SX4 has an airbag light that doesn't like to go off. Fiat from what read has a long history of electrical issues. Grounding issues for the most part... Hopefully the Chrysler folk will show the Italian how to wire up a vehicle for the long term.

Look at how you react to my posts!
You claimed the SX4 was the best looking out of ___ _____ _____ ______ ___. Where's the MINI, I'm sure you think that ugly little cracker box looks better.
dougtheeng says:

tsk tsk, the MINI is on another level above the SX4. Everyone know that, except apparently those in the advertising industry who have put together Suzuki's latest commercial campaign, ha ha.
ps, don't flatter yourself about my reaction. then again, your credibility is so shot on this sight I in fact may be the only one who actually reads what you write, lol.

I really like the look of the SX4. Much better then the Fit (whos looks I neither like nor dislike) and cleaner then the new Mazda3.
All the tests I've seen of the SX4 make it sound like a really good car that just needs some of Suzukis motorcycle engineering magic under the hood.
I'm not too worried about the airbag light glitch (although it should have fixed by now). It's minor compared to other problems in much more expensive cars in the long term fleet.

No, the Geo Metro was never considered anything close to a decent car. A Honda Civic might've been cheap, reliable transportation, but the mystery of the Geo Metro was "why would anyone buy this over a few year old Civic?"

So why did they sell millions of Metros/ Sprints/ Fireflys/ Swifts/ Forsas then?
Why are there still so many of them running around today even though they stopped making them years ago?
Why, in the latest issue of C&D, did a 10 year old Metro tie the 2010 Prius and easily beat the Insight in fuel mileage?
They are basic transportation but they are good, tough little cars whether you like it or not.
As long as you skip the automatic trans, they are even fun to drive (in an original Mini sort of way).
But somehow I have a feeling I'm not going to convince you.

I'm sorry, but I really like the exterior of the caliber. If the sx4 is what chrysler has to look forward to, I imagine their new products will fly off the lots about as well as these suzukis do. Great.

ItalDesign is responsible for this thing? That explains the ugly vents in the A-pillar. Giorgetto Giugaro's designs have them far too often & they're never pretty.

I agree with firstwagon about the Geo Metro. My first car back in high school was a 1993 Metro
The little thing wasn't luxurious and it lacked power steering and A/C. But it was roomy (I was 6'3'' back then), extremely fuel efficient (averaged 42mpg), and tough as can be. It never gave me an ounce of trouble while I had it until 110k miles.
It never was supposed to compete with Civics or Corollas of the time. It was for people who wanted a basic car because that's all they could afford and wanted to save money on fuel. Plus it was reliable as can be. The same can be said about most Suzuki developed cars.
Think about what other small cars were around back then; the Ford Aspire, Subaru Justy, Daihatsu Charade, Mazda 323 and the Metro doesn't seem too bad.

I don't find the SX4 even remotely good looking, inside or out. I sat in one at the car show, and my friend asked what I thought of it. My response: "I would rather take the bus."
