When you live and work on LA's West Side, you see multiple copies of every exotic piece of automotive iron. For example, it seems that almost every time I go to a fancy restaurant or mall, I see someone's black 997 Turbo. They're plentiful here.
But that's not the case with the Nissan R35: it's rare. I've only seen a handful in LA (not counting car shows). I mean, if you're going to spend that kind of money, most guys are going to get something that impresses the ladies, one of the few things the R35 does not do. (I know: who cares.)
So I was quite surprised to come across this brand new black GT-R in the Costco parking lot, its regular-guy owner eating an In-n-Out burger in it. He said that the dealer in the Hollywood area (near the amusement park) wanted $100K! He told that dealer to take a hike, and ended up paying the $80K list price from a store in Orange County.
A couple of guys shagging the one million shopping carts in the Costco lot busted out their camera phones and also took some pics of the GT-R pair, as happy as kids on Christmas morning. And why not? Car guys know that the R35 isn't just awesome, it's Special.
Enjoy your new R35 Sean.

The GT-R looks much more menacing in black.

I actually find the GTR somewhat attractive in black. It has that flair to it that the white completely hides.
I have only seen one of these before. I was on my way back from New York, and on the New Jersey Turnpike, and a Rental Dodge Grand Caravan had a nasty fender-bender with it.
The GC was completely destroyed, but the GTR seemed like it only needed a new rear fender.
lazyhater says:

A new rear fender on that GTR probably cost more then that entire rental Caravan. The repair bill was almost $4k when the Edmund's GTR got lightly tapped on the rear bumper.

Black treats the GT-R well...although if you are into the carbon fiber look you get more contrast with the white

I've seen some of these on highways in the mountains of North Carolina. I followed one for about 200 miles on the highway.. people seem to be taking road trips in them. What's funny is that it was just a youngish mild mannered couple driving the car not some rich PS3-loving jerk.

Those are the wrong type of girl. And guy.

Mike's right about the type of girl. I rarely run across girls who have ever heard of my car (SRT-4) or things like the GT-R and I usually like to hold onto them for a bit.
The GT-R is really special. A good friend of mine and I have a contest of who can take pictures of the most each month. So far he's winning as he's spotted the same one twice....

I haven't seen many GT-Rs either but then I haven't seen many Pontiac G3's lately either.
Fine line between being rare and special and being a sales flop.

I've been lucky with GT-R spotting since I live in the Silicon valley near Palo Alto. Saw one parked at a local high school football game, one at a Whole Foods, one on Route 35 heading north to Half Moon Bay (R35 on R. 35) and one at a starbucks in Sunnyvale. That turbo six has an amazing exhaust sound. That low resonance at 1500 rpms really sounds special, and it's amazing at higher revs.
I sincerely hope that Nissan keeps producing cars like this, even with the economy as it is.

The GT-Rs I've seen have been piloted by surprisingly normal-looking drivers. Folks that look like that have Camrys in the garage next to the GT-R.
billt9 says:

I've seen plenty, maybe 20 times. They crawl in the same parts of town the Lamborghinis and Aston Martins do. Don't expect to spot them in the used car neighborhoods.
The right kind of ladies like the GT-R. Porsches are ugly.

GT-R's attract men, if you are into that. I always said we marketed the cars to the wrong kind of people.

I've seen the same amount of Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I's running around Austin as I have GT-R's. Definitely not a sales flop.

I've always said it looks better in black. There is a black one that lives in the same area as me, and I've seen it twice. The one time I parked beside it and was surprised to see it had two (2!!!) baby seats in the back. Now those are some fun parents!

I saw two of them in black out here in Philly. If I had the money and was willing to spend it on an "exotic" Nissan, I would definitely get it in black.

If it's a lot where spots are in short supply, it's a sure way to get it scatched.
If that's the only spot left, someone will squeeze in next to the black GT-R.

Parking like that GT-R only MAKES people want to back in nice and tight and make it impossible for the other person to pull out.
Guy's a scumbag parking like that as a costco in socal. His car is not that special here and he's certainly not entitled to two spots.

blueguydotcom:
So that's the way it is? The way you park determines what kind of person you are?
Who's the scumbag? You have no idea who this guy is and yet call him a scumbag. He MAY be one but you have PROVED that you are. Loser.

It was almost closing time at Costco -- there were a ton of spaces available.
And black GT-R was parked kinda near me -- a mile away from the store!
It's not like he parked diagonally in front or anything. Not a problem at all.

Snake,
It's never acceptable. If it's an end spot with excess you park over it. But a real spot. Never acceptable. Ever.
It's the move of a selfish person. You want to keep people away find:
1. A spot next to a planter that you can hug.
2. A spot next to a cart return so you can pull in tight.
3. A spot with white lines indicating excess space where you will not intrude on another spot.
MN_Car_Enthus - struck a nerve, eh? Smile big, you're essentially arguing for the people who drive on the shoulder in heavy traffic.
firstwagon says:

Even if there are empty spots, parking like leaves one of two impressions.
1/ You think you car is so precious and you're so important that you deserve two spots or...
2/ you're a poor driver who can't handle the simple job of parking correctly.
Either way eveyone who walks past your car will think just what blueguydotcom thinks.

blueguydotcom says:

MN, prattle on.
Car is parked inconsiderately
Owner parked the car
Owner chose to leave car parked as such
Thus Owner is inconsiderate
The car didn't happen to end up being parked inconsiderately while the owner was away. He put it there and left it there. By logical extension he is inconsiderate.
