2009 Infiniti FX50: Three Warning Lights at Once. Cool.

FX-IP.gif

Driving to work this morning in our long-term 2009 Infiniti FX50 was uneventful. That is if you consider three warning lights coming on at once uneventful.

As you can see idiot lights lit for the traction control, the stability control and the Rear Active Steer systems. The car still drives fine, but obviously something has gone haywire. Something electronic no doubt.

Notice the car is just a few hundred miles shy of its 15,000 mile service so we'll just take it in early and get it all checked out.

Would someone tell a Nissan interior designer that blue and orange don't go well together? The GT-R has this illumination mistake on it's gauges, and I see the FX does as well.

Did the battery die? I believe the traction stability systems reset if the battery is disconnected.

Did one of you try to hook up a full Focal audio system? I think this is most likely as all you Santa Monica folks are tuner ganstas.

@Stingray454 It's actually blue and red.

I think you're color blind, mike. The digital display in the center of those gauges is orange, not red. If you want to see red, those hashmarks on the tach past 7k are red.

Second the orange. Don't like it with the blue either. Actually don't like orange or red displays in general, be they in Pontiac Grand Prixes, BMW's or Audis.

"Second the orange. Don't like it with the blue either. Actually don't like orange or red displays in general, be they in Pontiac Grand Prixes, BMW's or Audis."

BMW and Audi don't use orange, they use a highly engineered amber color. Engineering > Marketing/Fads

Pontiac used more of a red hue.

Ouch, I hope its a small electronic glitch that can be fixed fast by Infiniti. I also hope my Fx50s doesnt develop the same glitch. PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED ON THIS ONE EDMUNDS!

Btw, I have always loved Audis red backlights on their instrument clusters :D

@stingray454

They do look red in this picture from the blog earlier on:

That's when you get when you inundate a car with technology made in intimidate the owner, rather than help them...

It's blue and red. We have an 07 G35 and an 09 FX35, so I look at these gauges almost ever day. The colors work fine with one another.

Whats going on in the bottom left hand corner of the photo? looks like smoke?

dougtheeng says:

They're ugly gauges, no matter whether its red or orange.

esoterica says:

bimmerjay, BMW and Audi don't use the same color at all, Audi's is significantly more red than BMW's. The difference is is almost as strong as the difference between the orange and red in this picture. Perhaps you should get checked for colorblindness (not saying this disparagingly, a good friend of mine is colorblind).

Regardless, the idea that they're any more "highly engineered" reeks of eurosnob... the US military has done tests for fighter planes and the best color to use in terms of contrast/eyestrain/ease of sight is greenish white (our eyes are most sensitive to green) with the worst being vivid blue (as anyone who has ever driven a 2000-ish VW product will attest).

audisport says:

Hey, lay off of the Eurosnob esorterica. We all know that if it a part of a German car, we can all assume that it was overengineered. And according to my eyes, the Audi's color is more amber, not quite red. Maybe a touch more red than in the Bimmer however.

cx7lover says:

This is all a lie, it's photoshopped. Infinti's never give any owner any problems like BMW's and Audi's. FAKE FAKE IT'S ALL LIES!!!!!!!!!

esoterica says:

02:57 PM, 06/ 9/09

audisport, I'm not sure you have a good concept of what color amber is -- it's the color of, for example, front turn signal bulbs/lenses and retroreflectors, not Audi's gauges.

do any of you guys have a life? honestly, who cares whether it's amber or red?

e10rice - funny, had the same thought....looks like smoke to me in the lower left....."something has gone haywire. Something electronic no doubt."

I think Scott's on to something, NO doubt!!

Why is the IP so scratched up???

k2rm says:

03:44 PM, 06/ 9/09

The "smoke" is a residue left over from the protective plastic used at the factory. I was the first person to test drive my FX and pulled the plastic off myself on the first drive. Over time, dust sticks to this residue, making this pattern. I cleaned mine with a LCD screen wipe and it has never returned.

Funny how this post about an electronic malfunction turns into a debate about gauge styling. People are so quick to nitpick on this website :)

altimadude00 says:

I don't mind the colors, but couldn't they group all the warning lights in one spot rather than all over the IP? I know there's blacked out when they're not lit and you can't really see them, but still....put a little order in the IP!

firstwagon says:

k2rm

I was thinking the same thing. I'm much more interested in what the malfunction is and what it will cost to fix then I am in what shade of red the info box between the guages is.

bimmerjay says:

"bimmerjay, BMW and Audi don't use the same color at all, Audi's is significantly more red than BMW's."

I didn't say they did. They both use an amber hue, however, which is all I said.

"The difference is is almost as strong as the difference between the orange and red in this picture. Perhaps you should get checked for colorblindness (not saying this disparagingly, a good friend of mine is colorblind)."

I have taken a thorough color blindness test for a job and passed with flying colors, thank you (pun intended).

"Regardless, the idea that they're any more "highly engineered" reeks of eurosnob..."

All I said was that it's a highly engineered amber color (and it's been used for many years). I didn't draw any comparisons to anything else so your comment is rather presumptuous, don't you think? I even resisted the urge to disparage Pontiac, which can be very difficult for anyone to avoid.

A lot of people don't realize the science that actually goes behind some of these things when a manufacturer decides to ignore a current fashion trend, one of which is overstyled gauge lighting.

mikeolan says:

@ stingray454

Sit in the car. The picture makes it look orange but they're very clearly red.

cwc1 says:

Regarding VW's blue and red lit gauges from the early 2000s - I thought they were very cool and have a unique look. I've never had any trouble with the contrast at night. They stand out well and are easy to see.
