2009 Infiniti FX50: Hauls a Big Blowup

FX-and-blowup.jpg

On Friday I went hunting for the Flex keys only to find them in Brian Moody's right front pocket.

"Brian, I need the Flex for the weekend," I said trying not to look desperate. "Got something to haul."

"Sorry guy," Brian said tightly clutching the keys through the stonewashed denim of his Levi's. "I got a bunch of kids to haul around. Some event at my kid's school. Why don't you take the Infiniti?"

I had thought of that. But our long-term Infiniti FX50 is so small inside I figured the large print I had made to hang in my garage wouldn't fit. "Too small," I said. "The picture is 36x48."

"It'll fit," he said. "Just fold the seats."

So I reluctantly took the Infiniti. I folded the seats, which could not have been easier, and slid the large photo in with plenty of room to spare.

Now I admit that getting my blowup home isn't exactly a rigorous test of the FX, but lets face it, this is the kind of convenience that people buy SUVs and crossovers for. The photo would not have fit in the trunk of a car.

I wonder if it would have fit in the Fit. I should check.

Couldn't you have just taken the Genesis, and folded down the front seats?

I'm curious if it would have fit in my old Golf or my current MINI. Hatchbacks can fit in more then you'd think! I carried an in-box dishwasher in my Golf once. The loading dock crew laughed at first, but were amazed when it fit in no problem.

36x48... that would fit in just about anything with a fold down rear seat.

"The photo would not have fit in the trunk of a car."

It may not fit in the trunk (including the cargo area of the FX50), but it will fit in the trunk of ANY car that has a fold down rear seat (just like what you did with the FX50).

@rick8365: second that, to both. maybe i should put that wide format printer we have in the office to work... doesn't solve the garage problem though.

Scott, you're Brian's boss. You should have told him to jump in the lake.

wagon. Wagon. WAGON! If this is the most people are doing with SUVs and crossovers they should be driving more wagons, hatchbacks, or (GASP!) a minivan. People are always surprised when I tell people you can haul more crap in a minivan than an SUV.

I wonder if it would fit in any midsize sedan's back seat standing on edge. had that issue with my wife's camry, picture would fit, frame would not. so a call to mom for her prius and the beast got home. sure an suv or wagon is useful in this case, but not necessary.

The photo would've fit easily in my GTI ;-).

Back in 2006 a 27" CRT--while still inside its packaging--made it home easily in my GTI from Costco. Almost all of my IKEA shopping also fit inside the GTI.

That's why hatchbacks (and station wagons) are a smart buy.
