Entering destinations into our long-term Hyundai Genesis' navi system is a breeze. Both street address and point-of-interest (POI, shown) destination are simple and straightforward. The only beef I have is that for street address input, you cannot enter the city before you enter the street and house number. I like to enter city first because it speeds things up when the system filters down to the street and house number. But this is not a big deal because this navi system processor is pretty fast. And destination entry is not locked out while the vehicle is in motion.
Overall, the Genesis navi system is quite good, with one glaring exception: cancelling route guidance. You see, cancelling guidance it seems, is a secret. It took me forever to figure out. I showed a few Editors here, too, when they couldn't do it.
Many times, I like to initiate route guidance if I don't know where I am. Then I will cancel the route when I get to an area that I know and can find my way home. But accomplishing this the first time in the Genesis was a challenge.
There's nothing in the Destination menu that is of any help. Same with Route Overview -- nothing.
Cancelling Route Guidance must be in the Change Route menu -- let's check.
Hmmmm...nothing listed there either. What's going on?
Well, you have to look closely when you're looking at the navi display in the vehicle.
See that tiny pimple of an arrowhead on the right side of the screen?
That arrowhead is the only thing on the far right side of the screen. For every other function, you can choose from both halves of the screen by tilting the controller knob left or right. But nothing else is on the far right.
Let's tilt the navi controller to our destination, then tilt again to select that arrowhead.
There it is, in a tab behind the main screen. Not so easy to find the first time. No problem after that. But cancelling route guidance should be in a more logical location, or that arrowhead should be larger.
Anyway, cancelling guidance in our Genesis is no longer a secret.

It will get better with revisions... I'm still amazed at the quality of the graphics and the look of the system for the first time out.

Yeah it took a while to figure it out. But I now remember push down on the center controller twice and then you are in the screen to suspend the current route. It's now quick and easy.

Are the guidance maps really on a black background or does that just happen when you select a menu? If they really are devoid of any color or topographical data this has got to be the worst navigation system on the planet. The menu graphics are exceptional, however.

Most nav systems I have used do not have an obvious way to stop the guidance. For iDrive (the last rev, at least), it meant turning off the destination like you would turn off other map features. Or, you could use the voice command "stop guidance," which is really the best way to do it but I always forget. I just don't understand why a system that makes you click everything several times and really spell out what you want why there is no cancel button. Hopefully that has been fixed in the latest iDrive, and any other similarly un-intuitive system.

The guidance maps are on a black background with white lettering that turns blue when highlighted. The background turns grey with a bright blue line encasing the part of the screen being used.
The whole system intergrates well with the inside of the Genesis at night. All instuments are either white on the dash and blue lighting elsewhere in the cabin, The navigation screen doesn't stick out like a sore thumb but with the colors mention above. Somewhat similar to 750i screen

Let me just mention that Honda's way of canceling routing is very simple. Hit the "Menu" button then "Cancel Current Route". Easy.

Again the quickest way to suspend the navigation is to press twice the center knob down and the route is suspended. Much quicker than the article above.

toye -
Thanks for the tip. I'll try your double push method, but Brent has the Genesis now and it may be a while before it's back in Santa Monica.
Did you find that by chance or RTFM?
redliner -
Pics taken in the garage - there's no radio signal down there.

I haven't had much of chance to properly use the navigation on my Genesis but was I was always accidently engaging the navigation (playing with the center knob) and I couldn't get it to shut off.
But what I found out was that it is incredibly easy to pick a nagvigation point program it and just as easy to suspend the with out much effort.
Lets say you know the generally where you want to go without the exact address (Lets say I'm coming from Fort Lauderdale and going to downtown Atlanta.
I engage the navigation screen and nudge the center knob left, right, up or down. A blue circle (target area) will appear and you can move it anywhere you want in the US. So I move the blue circle up to Atlanta area and zero it on the downtown area.
Press the center knob down twice and navigation route is engaged. That's it.
To suspend the current route again all I have to do is press the center knob down twice and the route is suspended and normal functions for other things (HD/CDs etc) resume.
The Genesis navigation system is a breeze once I learned these two tricks. I can't wait to really use it once I take a trip to the west coast of Florida in 3 weeks.

If you look at the bottom right corner of the screen, an icon indicates which directions are available for selection with the controller. Not that easy to see in direct sunlight or when driving 60 mph, mind you.
This is similar to the iPhone homepage interface where the number of dots indicates how many pages of icons are present, and the highlighted dot indicates where you are.

What does RTFM mean?
Read The F-----G Manuel??
LOL that's all I could think of

toye,
IL editors typically translate it as:
Read The Friendly Manual
But you got the idea right.

Boy, I'm surprised at you guys and many of the others who have responded. Cancelling (or suspending) a route in the Genesis really is about as simple as it gets. And there are actually three easy ways to make it even simpler.
Many of the most common commands can be found by pushing down on the DIS unit. Do this during route guidance and the first command you'll see is "Suspend route." Click down again and the route is cancelled. Doesn't get much easier than that.
Oh, wait, it actually does. If this two click process is simply too complicated for you, try this. Push the "route" button on the side of the navi. You'll quickly see six options on the screen. The first one is "Cancel Route." Now, this gets complicated, but scroll to that selection and push the DIS knob. The route will be cancelled. Whew! Better pull over and catch your breath!
So, if all this pushing and scrolling and clicking is beyond your capabilities, there is one more option. Press the "voice" button on the steering wheel and simply say "Cancel route." Do that and you're out of route guidance. I know, I know -- two words might be considered excessive but it does the trick.
Three simple actions that any one who has ever used a navi should find convenient and easy.;)

I just tried your double push method.
Yes, it works; a small menu appears and you can suspend guidance. The method I described cancels the route completely. Brent may follow up with more info.
And yeah, RTFM => Read the Friendly Manual (we are a family friendly site!)
Thanks for the tip and enjoy your FL trip,

'Push the "route" button on the side of the navi. You'll quickly see six options on the screen. The first one is "Cancel Route."'
This doesn't work. Are you sure?
Re: voice response - I never use it. Many voice response systems are inaccurate or don't understand at all. Also, I'm not interested in RTFM in order to know the correct commands.

I am amazed at the sharpness of the graphics.

Just say cancel/suspend navigation guidance will temporary stop it .. until you restart the car
