2009 Ford Flex Limited: Fiesta At My Place

car-of-the-week-banner.jpg 555 Courtney's Fiesta with Flex.jpg

I'd better run out and buy lottery tickets. Why? There are only 100 Ford Fiestas in the Fiesta Movement program, and one them turned up two doors down from me as I was in my driveway finishing the photography for an upcoming 2009 Ford Flex suspension walkaround.

If that wasn't enough, the driver turned out to be none other than Courtney Force, daughter of Funny Car legend John Force. An up-and-coming drag racer in her own right, Courtney went to the same grade school as my kids and still lives nearby.

When I took these photos I hadn't yet seen the driver. It was only later, when I didn't have my camera, that the driver came back to the car and I started asking her about the car.

The Fiesta looks really good in person. The outside looks zippy and smart and the inside (Courtney let me sit in it) seems attractive, well-built and sensibly laid-out. This example clearly out-does the current dumbed-down US Ford Focus.

If they keep the production examples at or above this level, Ford will have a strong answer to cars like the Honda Fit and the Scion xD.

Here's a link to a bunch of Courtney's Fiesta Movement YouTube videos.

I saw one a couple weeks ago. Very nice. It was light green, which I think I liked better than Courtney's black.

I'm going to guess all she had to do to get the car was say who she is (and maybe who her father is, too).

I'm with 7driver in liking the light green on the Fiesta more.

Sure, but what's wrong with that? The Force PR machine is the envy of the motorsports world. John's sponsored by Ford and Courtney told me she's majoring in PR in college. She was a lock going in.

I've driven one, it's a far superior car to the Honda Fit and drives and feels like a real car.

Looks like a pretty awesome car. I can see why everyone in the U.S. wants one so bad. And by the way, subytrojan, that Top Gear episode was hilarious! Thanks for the link.

I also agree about the green. Black = blech on a small car. They should be bright and fun-looking.

These Fiestas are running around Europe and look fantastic, they are great cars. There is no excuse for the sad-sack Focus.

"These Fiestas are running around Europe and look fantastic, they are great cars. There is no excuse for the sad-sack Focus."

I wish they'd just import the European Fords; I have a sneaking suspicion that the "experts" in Dearborn will soften/or dumb down the driving experience of the US Fiesta and Focus.

saw three at huntington beach last week when i was out in california.

I think it is actually an extremely attractive car.

Keep your fingers crossed that it won't have the same sales as the Astra.

Saw a green Fiesta movement car with city skyline graphics on the lower body last Friday. Had a chance to talk to this guy when we were both lining up for Kogi's taco truck at Rowland Heights. According to him, the gas allowance is freakin sweet.

Best car review ever!! I really like the look of the Fiesta, hopefully the North American-market model is just as good as the Euro model.

I'm a big fan of the Fiesta looks. Its very Euro and very classy. I can't wait to have a go in one, and to start seeing them on the road.

nealibob says:

So do they really need another full year or more to hype this before they let us have it? Or is the "2011" Fiesta due any minute now?

I wish we could just take the entire set of European cars and make them available here. They seem to have so many more choices for city driving. I am not saying get rid of everything we have here, since there are legitimate purposes for some of the monsters we have, but just because our roads are wide does not mean we need to fill them.

roadburner says:

"I wish we could just take the entire set of European cars and make them available here."

I'd just be happy to see most of the European hot hatches as well as a wider range of diesel BMWs.

actualsize says:

@nealibob: EU laws are not identical to ours, so there's almost always a certain amount of re-engineering and re-certifying that needs to happen first. It takes about two years from the time you actually decide to do it. And remember, a 2011 model can legally go on sale as early as Jan 1, 2010. I'm just sayin'.

1487 says:

what are the chances this car will be deemed superior to the media favorite Fit? I say slim to none.

"So do they really need another full year or more to hype this before they let us have it? Or is the "2011" Fiesta due any minute now?"

Its coming out next year, hence the 2011 MY designation.

Fiesta is beautiful.

This is what you get when you have Euro designers working. Ford HAD to make this hatch attractive to compete in the brutal Euro & world markets.

Bring on more Euro products. Hurry up with the new Taurus & get the Mondeo too. If possible, how about the Ka?

Hurry up with the Euro Focus too.

Death to the current Focus. May the curent Focus die of the wrath of hundred Pharos. Amen.

When my girlfriend and I were at the NY Auto Show, she was immediately drawn to the lone Fiesta, wondering if it would come stateside. It was lime green, the same color as the one Clarkson drove when he was running around inside a mall being chased by baddies in a black corvette.

The Ford booth was a dismal affair, this was March '09 after all, but there were very few people. Most of them were around the fiesta, and predictably, this was the only car that was locked (as if it's some maybach or something, and even those are mostly not locked).

I saw one in a mall parking lot in Phoenix, and it was a stunner. That green is going to be a hot color when this thing ships.

nealibob says:

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that there are a number of hurdles to getting European cars to market in the US, but I will say that it is frustrating and lame. :)

I didn't say it was bad that Courtney gets "help" being associated with her dad. JF is probably one of the best people to come out of Yorba Linda. :o)

bal169 says:

The angle of that first picture makes the Fiesta look to be almost the same size as the Flex.

DCuerpoJr says:

I really like the Ford Fiesta and the Euro Focus. When they arrive in the States I'm definitely going to test drive them.

Both are at the top of my list for a commuter car.

For the weekends I'm leaning towards the 2010 Ford Mustang, but I'll hold off for the 2011 model that's rumored to have a new 5 liter V8. Maybe I'll pay a little extra and have the rear suspension upgraded as well.

actualsize says:

11:06 AM, 06/10/09

@bal169: Don't believe it. It's all perspective.

stovt001 says:

11:39 AM, 06/10/09

I'm thinking along the lines of DCuerpoJr. A Fiesta or Euro Focus would be a great weekday car. They look classy enough to drive to meet clients but sure will keep gas costs down. A used MX-5 or some other used performance car would make a fine weekend toy.

wobbly_ears says:

12:54 PM, 06/10/09

Almost all Euro designs cars look classy. They have enough style in them without going over the top. Japanese/Korean designs are dull but not offensive looking.

American car companies design bars of soap, like the current gen Cobalt & Focus.

Death to current Focus. Amen.

Hey this is Courtney Force and I'm signed in under a co-worker's account, but I just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading this article! It's really cool that I got the opportunity to meet a Ford enthusiast and be able to give him a better perspective of the car. I read through a lot of your guys' comments and believe me, you won't be disappointed when this car is available in the U.S.! In fact, I provided a link if anyone wants to check out a Ride and Drive event near you!

Also, I really want to thank Dan Edmunds for this write up and even more so for promoting my You Tube videos.

Thanks,
Courtney Force (Fiesta Agent 15)

@jfrchad: Please thank Courtney and tell her we can go one better. We can set it up off-line if she follows me on Twitter @ actual_size.
