2009 BMW 750i: Old School

bmw-735i-555.jpg

While driving the 2009 BMW 750i into the office this morning, I spotted this early 1990s 7 Series in front of me.

I snapped a picture so you can see how the 7 Series has evolved since the E32 735i.

Old school for sure.

I prefer the generation in between. Precisely a 2001 740i.

Something like this:

Out of the two above, the old one.

It has more passion.

I once saw an E32 driving down a street in Chicago with a ladder strapped to the roof. It was a special moment.

@adavis2493: my thoughts exactly

and, on that note, for anyone who has not already seen bmw's "the hire" series:

the new one. You fools are crazy.

carguy622 says:

I like them both for different reasons. The only 7 I didn't like was the previous generation. The new one looks like a proper flagship. The last 7 was to busy for it's own good.

x3 on adavis2493. The older one is cleaner and better looking in my opinion. Given the choice of ownership between the two I'd of course go with the new one, though.

I agree, the 2001 7 series bodystyle was the best looking.

bimmerjay says:

After driving the new one... I'd take the new one without a doubt. No comparison (looks included).

firstwagon says:

The new one has the advantage of a much picture.

I would choose the old one because it's much better looking and represents where I see BMW in the market much better then new BMW's.

It's also way cheaper to buy.

One of my favorite BMWs was an E32 735i in Bronzit. Beautiful car, luxurious and fast. I'd love to have a well-kept or restored example in my garage.
But one cannot deny the advantage of time and technology -- I'll take the new one!

uncanny_man says:

At least the new one is less bland. Old bmws stir this soul about as well as k cars.

"One of my favorite BMWs was an E32 735i in Bronzit. Beautiful car, luxurious and fast."

I don't know if I'd call a 9.5-10 second 0-60 time of the circa-1990 735i "fast".

im with adavis2493 on the 2001 740i. But in this case it would be the new one.

corollasman says:

I prefer neither. I've never been a fan of the 7 series.

roar02ram says:

In terms of exterior styling, the 2001 7 all the way. Anyone else remember Tomorrow Never Dies?

However, I must choose the new car's interior. I think it's actually the first 7 that could be described as having a luxurious interior (never a BMW strong point, IMO).

makakio says:

Neither. I prefer the 2001.

allthingshonda says:

Old for sure. It "looked" like a BMW from all angles. The new one is very Lexus in the rear, probably couldn't tell them apart without looking at the badge.

petrolhead85 says:

Have to agree with adavis as well. That generation of 7 series has the cleanest design when compared to the rest.

sgude says:

05:21 PM, 06/17/09

Bimmerjay, what you're referring to is "quickness," or more accurately, given the time you quoted, "not that quick." For its time, the 735i was plenty fast for American highway.

nsbio1 says:

Design of BMW vehicles peaked in mid 90s and it has only gone downhill from there. Granted, it is really difficult to further improve upon almost perfect appearance. To give them credit, BMW did not go too far downhill. MB is worse off in this regard.

Id gladly take a 2001 740i Sport, blk on blk with those gorgeous ///M split spoke 5 star rims as long as I could somehow get it with the 2009 750i's drivetrain, interior, improved chassis dynamics, infotainment and safety updates. =)

If i had my choice of 7 series, I'd go for the '06-'08 750i short wheelbase with the sport package everytime. the 4.8l was a thing of beauty and the new 4.4l although fast, strikes me as rather sterile.

I still want a B7. Ten days behind the wheel hooked me but good.

I prefer the new one. More power is the reason why.

My favorite BMW from the early 90's is hands down the 5-series. That has got to be the best looking BMW ever. Is anyone with me?

pyo_s65 says:

12:46 PM, 06/18/09

New for me. The old one looks very dated for some reason. I think this issue is very specific to certain cars only. The old E34 and E39 5 series for example are timeless designs to my eyes.

mustang5507 says:

07:59 PM, 06/18/09

I'd have to go with the bandwagon...the 1995-2001 7 is definitely the best looking one. It's aged the best, and the late model sport pkg cars are definitely pretty mean looking. Bottom line, it's the best balance between modern and classic.
