2008 Pontiac G8 GT: I Never Noticed This Before

pontiac-g8-vent-1.jpg

As I was driving home last night in the Pontiac G8 GT, the A/C was pumping out pretty strong. I even had the fan on the lowest setting. This is something that is common in American cars. We Americans sure like our A/C cranking.

When I got home and opened the door, I realized the driver-side air conditioning vent is actually on the door. Underneath, there is a vent in the dash that gets covered by the door vent when it is closed. You would think this double vent would cut down the amount of air that flows through but it doesn't.

I don't know why I never noticed this design before.

Can you think of any other cars that have this setup?

Here's how it looks when the door is closed.

Previous generation BMW 5 Series had their air vents on the door.

My 1996 Riviera has the same setup.

My old 1990 Acura Legend has the window vent on the door to keep the door window from fogging up so it has a similar design.

Previous gen Hyundai Santa Fe has it.

Mercedes has something similar to this, as I'm sure do a lot of other luxury cars.

There is a vent that connects through the front door and to the rear of the passenger compartment so air can come out of the B-pillar. I remember this because on my S430, the seal broke, and it felt as if air was coming in through an open door.

Nice alignment and fit of the pieces.

I think the first gen Lexus LS had this from what I can remember.

There is at least one other car in your long-term fleet that has this. Anyone car to hazard a guess?

I'm pretty sure our Genesis has this as well.

I believe the upper-level Chrysler minivans from 96 had air flow through the full-length of the front door to provide air for the 2nd row passengers.

1st gen Chevy Malibu (1997-2003) had them in roughly the same spot.

my old 99 eclipse had a similar set up.

+1 audisport

I don't take a lot of interest in trim details but the seam in the door open picture doesn't even look close to being right.

My 1991 Probe had the same deal. I don't see a gasket on the Pontiac. Is it on the door? My Probe had it on the car.

Like Louiswei's Acura, it also had a defrost vent that was built into the door. Worked better than any side window defroster I've seen before or since. I wish they still did it that way.

nealibob says:

I think the Edge has some door vents, but it looks like they are for defrost.

Sucks that this car is going away.. I don't understand why they won't rebadge it again as a Chevy. Just design new front and rear clips and some new wheels maybe. I was considering the G8 as a possible purchase but not anymore obviously.

The first gen Previa had vents on the door to defrost the window and separate ones for the feet of the rear passengers. It had 2 channels when you opened the door.

Hyundai has vents for the rear passengers going through the front doors like this.

Previous Chrysler minivans also had this arrangement.

And the 370Z in your fleet has it as well.

The door panel is misaligned just a bit.

dang8 says:

The door panel to dash relationship on my 2009 G8 is the same (slightly misaligned). Apparently, GM designed it that way because every G8 I've seen is this way.

cx7lover says:

I just noticed the panel with the vent in it has got a gap that grows to the left.

fuhteng says:

07:33 AM, 06/24/09

My G8 has the same problem with the door panel not quite matching up. It doesn't bother me any, but yes, I do notice it.

The door vent set-up works great too! When the A/C comes on fully I have to mostly close it so my left hand doesn't freeze. I thought it was rather clever.

@ petrolhead-

"1st gen Chevy Malibu (1997-2003) had them in roughly the same spot."

I think you mean the fifth generation Malibu. The first generation was 1964-1967.

Tons of cars has this same design, the NSX was the 1st that came on my mind.....

How much longer does IL have the G8 GT? And what is next to replace it? A V6 or SS Camaro? A Taurus of some type?
