2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR: Fun Plug

I like loud cars.

Now that I got that out of the way, let's rewind about 3 months.

When I photographed the AMS Twin Tip exhaust before our Engineering Editor and general EVO guru J. Kavanagh had it installed on our GSR, I noticed the option of removing a disc that would allow the exhaust to exit without passing through the muffler. Kavanagh shook his head and mumbled something about getting pulled over or headaches or yeah, whatever.

Fast forward back to this weekend.

Saturday, I found myself with 10 minutes to kill and the GSR in my garage. Follow the jump to see how easy is it to remove the Fun Plug on our GSR.

As you can see, with the Fun Plug in place, the exhaust is routed through the driver's side exhaust tip. I like symmetry too much to stand by and let this continue.

A look down the passenger side pipe shows the disc ruining all the fun.

Grab a deep 11mm socket, a wrench and loosen the clamp that holds the exhaust tip to the rest of the system.

Now, just pry the solid disc out and reattach the soon to be not so shiny exhaust tip.

Check out the offending disc.

Impressions? Well, it's better. Duh.

It's no longer 'sporty'. In fact, it's no longer discreet or for the faint of heart. The lumpy idle, once only noticeable to those in close proximity, is now very pronounced, and very cool. Quick upshifts that used to produce a heavily muffled pop now sound like 2x4 smacking the top of a table. Similarly, breathing the throttle at high RPM's or busting out a rev-matched downshift will make innocent bystanders hit the deck.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Rather than throwing the Fun Plug away, I did the decent thing and put it in the cupholder. Not everyone on our staff likes to be cool.

It'll be interesting to hear what some of the other staffers think of the GSR's new-found voice.

This sounds great, one more vote in the post a video category! This feels like such a bad thing to like hanging out in a empty parking lot at 2 a.m. with your friends looking for races!

Downshifting for pedestrians is the best! They always give you a startled glance before continuing on their way.
