Drove our modified 2008 Mitsubishi Evo GSR home last night. When I did the car's rear spoiler was attached to the its decklid, doing nothing useful except blocking my rear vision and ricing up the little sedan.
As you can see, when I drove our modified 2008 Mitsubishi Evo GSR to work this morning that rear wing was no longer annoying the crap out of me.
Before.
After.
Lame plastic spoiler was removed in less than 5 minutes. It's held on by two easily accessed bolts, two easily accessed nuts (all four measure 10mm) and some sticky stuff, which left some of itself behind.
Most of the remaining sticky stuff was easily wiped away, but some of it remains, along with four holes and two black rubber things.
So it's a little ghetto, but in my book ghetto beats ricey any day.
What do you think?

I dunno. Those holes look nasty. And will the water go into the trunk or the drip channel? What am I saying? This is SoCal. It never rains here.

I don't like the "rice" look, but in this case I think the spoiler worked just fine.

Looks better with out. Less attention.
You can take out those black clips with a flat head very carefully. Does need to be dropped more though.

Wow...the look of the car has totally changed(but I do like). I too have a Evo(with the wing removed and have never looked back...wait a second my wing is in my back seats as well.--LOL)
Question: is the Evo X wing made of CF?
clarkma5 says:
11:28 AM, 06/10/09
That looks quite clean without the spoiler actually, I like it. Too bad you now need a trunk lid swap of some sort to fix those holes; it's certainly not a permanent solution.
txmatt1 says:
11:32 AM, 06/10/09
MUCH cleaner without the spoiler. The spoiler just mucks up the nice flowing line from roof, down rear window, to trunk lid. There are very few cars that I think a tacked-on plastic spoiler appendage makes look better. I much prefer the cleaner Euro look.
slowevo says:
11:36 AM, 06/10/09
You can just get some vynal circles cut out to cover then. Been like that on my evo for a year, no issues.
Its going to be hard to find a trunk swap.

Funny nontheless. Better without - will it just rain into the trunk now though?
zcalvert says:

car has a tall back end either way. however, i'd say the lack of center caps on the wheels beats the spoiler on the tackiness scale.
dougtheeng says:
11:52 AM, 06/10/09
The car looks worse without the spoiler. I think people love to hate on the spoiler, but check out a base Lancer sometime that doesn't have one - it looks lame.
I think a decklid could be the way to go though.
e10rice says:

Um........yeah.......... put that thing back on! Seriously! It cant be that ricy being stock. Now if you have removed the factroy unit and put one of those GT Shopping cart wings on, then yeah Ricy!
mtakahashi says:

Kill the wing. I'm curious to see how much the loss of downforce would increase overall top speed. I volunteer to head out to El Mirage with a socket wrench.
bkochuk says:

now it's a stealth car but the holes have got to go.
carguy622 says:

But the spoiler makes the car go faster!
I hate spoilers. Good riddance. The only ones that are that look good are the little lip spoilers. Personally I "love" trucks and minivans with spoilers. That's always good for a laugh.
jackson611 says:
12:01 PM, 06/10/09
without the wing the car's roof line is messed up, and the rear bumper looks all wrong. take the stock one off, but put something less intrusive back on.

"When ghetto is better than ricey"....
There's a difference between the two?
Those tall spoilers are practically worthless. They're only offered as OEM accessories for the "F&F" wannabes.
audisport says:
12:23 PM, 06/10/09
Yeah, I saw some tool in a new M3 and he had some ghetto German tuner spoiler tacked on the trunk. It just killed the car. I just shook my head. The only thing worse than big spoilers are fake port holes and fake hood scoops.
dalaw says:
12:31 PM, 06/10/09
Just for kicks, how about swapping the long term MR's spoiler onto the GSR's trunk. The black spoiler might fool people into thinking it is carbon fiber.
carlisimo says:
12:37 PM, 06/10/09
It looks terrible without the spoiler.
The high-mounted taillights need visual mass above them or the car's rear end looks out of balance. The decklid is also very plain compared to the rest of the car, when the spoiler's off.
charlesncharge says:
01:04 PM, 06/10/09
Looks like you've now got six holes in your trunk, and one in your head! C'mon, had that been the even larger/taller spoiler, then I'm on board, but news flash: Your's is the smaller of the two, and now you've got a Lexus IS look-a-like.
Congratulations!

If you're complaining about an Evo looking ricey, then, well, you're driving the wrong car.
These cars are meant to be ricey! It's what makes them what they are!
cruiserhead1 says:

Nice work! It looks a lot better without.
To plug the holes, use some rubber buttonhead plugs or the trunk swap is a good idea. I'm sure someone out there would love to swap and get that goofy spoiler.
The holes do not bother me. no one is going to notice it and any plug is better than that useless spoiler.

I always liked the no wing look. For a street car, looks better for me. Although for a race track, I like to have a "real" wing on a car.
I always pull wings off GT-R's. I take them off, and then someone else puts them back on.

maybe that would be a good option as well.
tarmacdaddy says:

Smaller spoiler = lame & useless.
Larger spoiler = ricey but proper on an Evo.
If you look at all the previous generations of the Lan Evo (sans first one), they all have a tall spoiler. These cars have been doing the tall spoiler before ridiculous neon-painted examples have been seen in Paul Walker movies. They are necessary to achieve proper downforce on shorter wheelbased sedans.
spen1818 says:

I would put on a lower spoiler.
banhugh says:

I cant see the stock evo wing doing much, because really, its pretty flat.
A true wing needs to have a good degree of angle. Plus all the spoilers everyone makes fun of, are the spoilers. ACR Viper, and time attack cars all have those rediculously tall wings. To get a wing to actually be effective you need to get it out of the cars slip stream.
ddoouugg says:
02:09 PM, 06/10/09

I think the evo looks better with out the wing.As far as the holes go I do belive RRM makes a trunk lip that has covers to go over the holes. But the lip is carbin fiber, which should be painted to match the car in my opinion.

subytrojan says:

Jay, can you chime in with the approximate change in rear downforce on the car? I also think the amount of lift under the front end at speed would be affected, too.
kurtamaxxxguy says:
04:09 PM, 06/10/09
Your Evo's definitely more "stealthy", though the trunk-lid holes would need covering.
No wing means one less part for tool-happy strippers to steal from your Evo!
"They are necessary to achieve proper downforce on shorter wheelbased sedans."
...on a race track or drag strip.
Has anyone measured the downforce this small wing really provides? Does the car's rear squat down another inch or two at freeway speeds?

home depot has plastic hole plugs in varying sizes that you can plug the holes with and use some touch up paint on.
common method on the mustang forums for people who do the spoiler delete and don't want to pay $400 to take it to a body shop.
not perfect, but definitely passable.

Can't argue with you guys whether it looks better or not. Personally I like the big spoiler on the Evo and I think it looks like a Mazda 3 without it, but I'm 23 and I like big wings.
Those who think the spoiler is just dead weight, the wing is actually functional on the track. If Edmunds goal for the Evo GSR is to beat the GTR on a track, they're going to need a bigger wing which is worth about 0.5 to 1s around the track. (and probably a front spoiler as well)
cruiserhead1 says:
01:34 PM, 06/11/09
without the spoiler the car will get better mpgs, have better visibility and be faster on the track without the drag of the picnic table on the trunklid.

"without the spoiler the car will get better mpgs, have better visibility and be faster on the track without the drag of the picnic table on the trunklid."
I'm sure that's why race cars put big wings in the back, to slow the car down. How much do you think the aerodynamic forces slow down the car in accelerating vs providing downforce and stability during cornering?
jace88 says:
04:15 PM, 06/11/09
Put on the MR spoiler :)
It's weird reading the American site as in Australia, the spoiler you guys have on your GSR Evo is equivalent to our regular Lancer spoiler hence it doesn't seem very purposeful. Same for Ralliart Lancer (the turbo AWD Lancer).
For all of the Evo's here, we have the high-rise spoiler. Some call it tacky or ricey but I think it balances out the rear end very nicely. If you take it off on this car, the rear looks really unbalanced even if it is very clean as per the above.
If you need a boot lid swap, maybe buy a CF bootlid? They aren't too expensive but look the part- or you could just paint it to match the car and it will look like it never had a spoiler to begin with.
