I got back to the office pretty late after a photo shoot and I was beat. All I wanted to do was go home, watch the game highlights and go to sleep. Our 135i was waiting for me in the parking garage and I slowly moseyed down to it after dropping off all of my gear.
That BMW gave me a quick jolt to wake me up, however. When I pushed the start button it turned and turned and turned like it wouldn't fire up.
"Crap!" I thought to myself. "If this thing doesn't start I'll have to walk home!"
The second my finger was near the panic button it sprang to life. Thanks be to the car gods. I was relieved I didn't have to walk home after the monster day I had.

Scott: That is a precursor to the HPFP issue that all the N54 engined cars have a varying issues with. I too have had a couple of long starts and am just waiting on it to go so I can get it replaced and enjoy the car again.

Yup - that's the HPFP demons. Good luck on your warranty with the DME flash.

...maybe if you show up with the edmunds plate on the front ;~)
I mentioned this when the DME tune was first floated, but the HPFP concern is currently enough to deter me from ever considering a BMW with the N54.

High Pressure Fuel Pump. Mazda is also having some issues with the fuel pump in their DI cars...

HPFP = High Pressure Fuel Pump
Required for direct injected engines, and apparently problematic on this generation of BMWs.

I know someone who's been through five HPFP's...

My HPFP went out on my 135i. Soon it will fail and the car will limp home or to the dealership. Thankfully though, BMW NA extended the warranty on the fuel pumps to I believe 120,000 miles. All owners with the N54 receive a letter from BMW regaurding this issue and is discussed all over the web. www.1addicts.com

I have a 2008 BMW 135i which was exhibiting this exact problem. I had the High Pressure Fuel Pump replaced under warranty, now it's fine.
You need the High Pressure Fuel Pump replaced!!!
