2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Giant Trunk

car-of-the-week-banner2.jpg gigantic trunk in the 2009 vw jetta

The trunk of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI is massive. It's at least a four-body trunk. If that Edmunds license plate isn't giving you enough context, follow the jump for a more detailed look.

At 16 cubic feet, the Jetta's trunk offers about 2 more cubes than either the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry (both much larger sedans) and about 4 more cubes than the Civic or Corolla. VW's use of trunk struts instead of gooseneck hinges make a difference, too. For reference, that Kettler tricycle in the picture measures 22 inches high and 30 inches wide. It fit, no problem. The umbrella stroller is about 40 inches long. As you can see, I could have fit a lot lot lot more stuff in there, too.

I wish they still made trunks like in the Jaguar Xj or Lincoln Town Car- Nice and Deep.

The Town Car's trunk is insanely deep, and now that they have properly positioned the spare tire it's even more useful.

I see VW has removed the nice chrome skid plate that the previous generation had. It was a nice touch.

I have an '06 Jetta TDI (same body style)... the trunk is ideal for trips to costco/bjs/sams/etc for a large-ish family. The contents of a full-to-the-brim costco-sized cart fit no problem.

I actually prefer to take the VW to shop warehouse stores over our minivan for ease of loading. (I can't easily fold down the minivan seats due to child seats in all rows).

Large trunk + TDI's long range= great road tripper.

The Jetta's trunk is big, but the difference isn't nearly that extreme.

Accord: 14.0
Camry: 15.0
Civic: 12.0
Corolla: 12.3

bradyholt beat me to the punch on your failure at maths, so I'll just comment that it's interesting the Jetta uses struts while the considerably more expensive CC has gooseneck hinges. And, like the Hyundai Genesis, the CC's hinges are boxed off to prevent them from crushing cargo, but that subtracts 1 or 2 cubic feet, leaving the CC with a sparse 13--not terrible given the CC's mission, but sadly unnecessary.

@bradyholt I don't know if I would trust those figures. The Japanese and Germans seem to use different methods of measurement. Compare the Corolla and Civic headroom figures to the Jetta and they have much more. If you go and actually sit in them, the Jetta has way more actual headroom.

The numbers are from edmunds.com's site; if they've done their own measurements, they should publish them instead of the manufacturers'. Traditionally, trunk space was measured by filling the volume with ping pong balls until they were packed as tightly as possible without compression, but who knows what they do nowadays.

bradyholt says:

Warren,

There is no measurement that would say the Jetta's trunk is twice as big as the Corolla's.

Trunk size is important as well as rear folding seats. Believe the new Genesis rear seats don't fold down. Poke thru's for skiing, etc, don't do the job. Jetta has a great size trunk and thinking the seats fold down. They do in the Passat.

bc, if his math is as bad as your spelling, then we're in for trouble.

The XJ's trunk isn't that big anymore. Wide, long, but shallow; they stick a full sized spare and a battery below it. It's nice to use-you don't have to reach into it that much or bend down too far-but it's smaller than a Jetta's.

The jetta competes against the Corolla and Civic:

Civic: 12.0
Corolla: 12.3

Thus a 16 cubic foot trunk is giant compared to those two. The Passat competes against the Camcord.

Big Wheels have seatbelts these days? Sheesh, what is this world coming to? I guess there is a 20-page legal disclaimer that the 4-year old rider must read and agree to before riding it too?

that's the last time I try to do math when I'm home sick. thanks for the corrections, folks. text has been edited to reflect the correct numbers.

fyi: we publish manufacturer numbers because we don't currently have the means to measure all vehicles consistently.
