2009 Hyundai Genesis or 2009 BMW 750i?

750i-and-Genesis-keys.gif

Mike Schmidt just handed me the clipboard. "What do you want to drive tonight and for the weekend?" he asked.

Well, last night I drove our long-term BMW 750i. And I thought about just keeping it until Monday because I need a large sedan on Saturday for some family business. But wait, our long-term Hyundai Genesis V6 is available? I'll take that.

No I'm not kidding, I really did it. I just swapped the key to a $90,000 BMW for the key to a Hyundai. Why? Because the Genesis is that good.

What would you have done?

I can imagine the comments that are going to follow.
But I would have a tough choice between the two.
They're both just SO luxurious and so nice inside, I would literally have to think about the pros and cons of both cars.
If your Bimmer had an iPod connection, I would almost certainly take that, but since it doesn't, I would probably take the Genesis.
It really is a tough choice.

Given the way your new LT fleet additions have been going the Genesis will eventually become the cheapest car you guys have.

I think this post just shows why Genesis is doing so well in the marketplace. Hyundai did their homework well.

desmolicious says:

I think we need a reality check here. Edmunds editors primary function on this blog is to entertain and amuse. Get a reaction from the readers. If they wrote something boring and non controversial, then there will be no response. A bad thing for a writer.
Which would have happened if Scott wrote he picked the BMW over the Hyundai.
But, how about picking the Hyundai over the BMW! Yes, it's that good! Dang, that's gonna get a response from the hosers on this site!!!

Yes, the Hyundai is a really nice car. But outside the bizzaro world that is this blog, do you think anyone with the means is really going to pick it over the BMW given the choice? Really?

joefrompa says:

Desmo - If the hyundai is the better drive and just as nice: yes.

I haven't driven both, so I don't know.

$90k 750i vs. $35k Genesis?

I'll take the Genesis to serve as my DD and use the rest $55k to buy myself a weekend fun car...

It's not.

louiswei says:

Desmo - good point!

The Edmunds IL LT blog has become a clown house which has two purposes to serve:

- Provide cheap entertainment
- Generate traffic

It's no longer the old LT blog where they used to have reasonable cars with reasonable posts so reasonable discussions can be made.

Sad...

While it may be difficult for me to actually choose to *own* a Genesis over a 750i, taking one for a weekend and being able to drive the 750 later seems pretty darn reasonable. Especially if the genesis is as good as they've been saying.

That said, if I'm putting down cold hard cash, it's gonna be one hell of a fight to pry a BMW 335, M3, 535, 550, or M5 key from my hand. It's partly the image (sorry if I buy into branding at some level) but mostly just the sheer awesomeness of owning one. I would know- just got rid of an MB for a lower-segment BMW and I'm ecstatic.

"I would know- just got rid of an MB for a lower-segment BMW and I'm ecstatic."

Whadya get/trade-in?

langjie says:

01:58 PM, 05/28/09

If I had your job, I would think it's your duty to trade in the keys of the BMW for the Hyundai. You're trying to form an opinion of the Genesis who is shooting for the luxury brands.

mercedesfan says:

02:02 PM, 05/28/09

I would have kept the Bimmer keys. It's better looking, better built, more feature laden, and more fun to drive. The Hyundai is great, but I would NEVER choose it over a flagship European sedan.

brn says:

desmolicious nailed it.

mike63amg says:

02:29 PM, 05/28/09

desmolicious is more than likely correct. If that's the case, Edmunds IL is now no better than the UK mag, AutoExpress. With Edmunds.com for the average consumer, IL should be the American EVO. But now, I guess they're no better than the tabloid of car magazines. Thanks, Scott.

adavis2493 says:

02:39 PM, 05/28/09

I would have stuck with the Bimmer.

Personally, I like the idea of the Genesis, but can I picture myself driving one?

The answer to that question is No.

Same goes for the Cadillac CTS, and Pontiac G8.

With these cars, I could imagine having one for a few weeks, but in the long run, I feel like I would regret it.

Sorry, I can't get over the brand.

carguy622 says:

I'd stick with the snobby BMW. Hey, I'm trying to be honest here.

dragonflight says:

@carfreak

traded in an S320 ('95, LWB, all the trimmings) for an 08 528xi with Premium, Cold Weather.

Love the AWD traction and the "newness", not to mention having a warranty again.

Miss the "oozing refinement" feel the old benzes have, the epic look (the W140 still looks like commander and chief of the road) the spacious backseat of the S- it makes the 750 (even the LWB) look like a joke. They just dont make those like they used to...

Having said that, the BMW has been fantastic and a lot of fun. And I've managed to figure out iDrive pretty quickly too!

@ adavis2493,

Brand snobbery at its best right there.

1speedbike says:

03:19 PM, 05/28/09

dragon makes a good point of buying vs driving. if we were BUYING one or the other with our own money, we'd almost all (unless there's a few really wealthy ones here) pick the genesis and save the cash. if either one was handed to us, we couldn't just sell them and buy the other (thus the saving the money for ourselves scenario again), and we were asked which one, you'd have to be nuts not to choose the BMW. unless you're an IL editor..

mymaxima says:

mymaxima says:

04:53 PM, 05/28/09

And, I'd take an A8 or S550 over 750i or Genesis. But, 750i? It should have fantastic performance at that price. However, Genesis gets my nod on looks over 750i. Sorry BMW, you should have kept the year-2000 era 740i design gene to get my vote.

cheslin says:

05:18 PM, 05/28/09

Mercedesfan, the Genesis might have comparable equipment; if I remember correctly, the BMW is mostly a stripper, not even iPod...

jeffal says:

05:28 PM, 05/28/09

If you read the Genesis Forums on the internet you would see that the Genesis is actually not that good and a lot of owners are upset.

Maybe in a few years when the suspension is fixed and the electronic bugs are worked out.....

toye says:

05:34 PM, 05/28/09

The Genesis continues to win people over. I dare the skeptics to go and just test drive it. The Genesis is a remarkable automobile for its price range.

Scott Oldham is so impressed that he is seriously considering the Genesis as his next family car. To have the Inside Line Editor in Chief make that kind of statement says volumes about Genesis and Hyundai.

toye says:

05:38 PM, 05/28/09

Only a subjective few have been complaining they certainly let everyone know about it with a lot of comments.

kurt_ says:

07:00 PM, 05/28/09

Wow. Some of you guys get wadded up awfully easy.

If you've driven both of these cars, and I'm guessing most of you haven't (although now that I say that everyone will have driven their dad's squash partner's Genesis and their mom's sister's hairdresser's 750) the decision isn't too hard to believe.

I'd have picked the Genesis too.

Apart from doing most everything the BMW will do (hold four adults, keep me comfortable, and waft over miles of highway) the Genesis will fit in my garage.

The BMW is pretty trick and packed with features, but other than the gadgetry and really nice front seats, it doesn't do much to distinguish itself from the Genesis. It does have that badge though...

cx7lover says:

08:01 PM, 05/28/09

I love the look of the 750i but I'd worry less about any and everything in the Genesis.

brn says:

09:34 PM, 05/28/09

toye, I did and it doesn't live up to the hype.

kurt, those same arguments (hold four adults, keep me comfortable, and waft over miles of highway) would have you choose a Fusion over the much more expensive Genesis.

toye says:

03:48 AM, 05/29/09

brn, I hope you weren't expecting to compare the Genesis to a $90k car...nobody expect it to. I know a lot of BMW owners that have been quite surprised by the quality, comfort, fit and finish for an automobile that costs well UNDER HALF of a 750i. That in itself is quite an acomplishment for a Hyundai.

johnnyr3 says:

04:17 AM, 05/29/09

"desmolicious nailed it."

By what? Saying "It's not"? [Sigh] I wonder how many people on here actually own or had the means to own either car. I really do.

Just suck it up. Hyundai made a car that could give a person pause in choosing between its car and a 750i. That alone is an accomplishment.

brn says:

06:09 AM, 05/29/09

toye, the author of the article would have us make the comparison and he chose the Hyundai. I've been in both and it's absurd.

johnnyr3, I was referring to desmolicious' other post. The one that had actual content.

dougtheeng says:

"Apart from doing most everything the BMW will do (hold four adults, keep me comfortable, and waft over miles of highway) the Genesis will fit in my garage."

Have you ever even driven a BMW? BMW don't waft over miles of highway, a town car or a Lexus maybe. A BMW ATTACKS the highways and the curves and the on ramps. Thats the difference between the two vehicles and for those who don't view driving as simply a way to get from point A to point B, thats a HUGE difference. I am not saying the Genesis is not a great car it is a great car, but for those of us who get up early on a saturday or sunday just to drive for driving sake, the Genesis won't put the same smile on your face as the 750 or any bmw for that matter.

tshoe says:

11:20 AM, 05/29/09

Anybody who took the Genesis of the 750i is lying to themselves. Think about it people; BMW has been making nice cars for a while now - we all would take the $90K car over a $40K Korean car. It may be overpriced or not a good a value as the Hyundai but we are not talking about our own money. If it were our own income then we all would probably go with the cheaper car and save or spend the extra 50 grand.

stovt001 says:

11:34 AM, 05/29/09

Concerning the whole brand image thing, that's actually the one reason I wouldn't chose a BMW, or at least certain ones. The 1 and 5 series still seem to be reserved for the people who like the car for what it is, not the image the badge gives off. However, in my area everyone and their mom owns a 3 series. None of them can actually afford it, but they'll take all the risky and absurd financial moves that characterized the past decade of indulgence to own one. So buying a 3 series, you look like every other no-imagination irresponsible 20 year old jerk or ditzy admin assistant who financially ruined themselves for a badge. Buy a 7 series and you're that gangbanger who either stole it or bought it with money from illegal activities. Which is why if I get a BMW, it will be a 1 series. Sure the 3 series is bigger and offers more for almost no extra cost, but around here it is more ubiquitous than a Corolla and makes you look like like a real jerk.

I do agree with what "Desmolicious" said...BUT...if everyone knows that this blog is created for entertainment and to get reactions out of the readers, and STILL, people are becoming so passionate over something so unsubstantial, then this writer has absolutely succeeded. While everyone would like to fight and argue over whether or not Hyundai will ever be considered a "luxury" brand, the REAL issue is being overlooked. This blog is simply about personal choice. Just because this writer CHOSE the Hyundai doesn't mean YOU have to. And just the same, you can't get your feelings hurt when someone doesn't drool over the BMW. Just because some people CHOOSE to buy the Genesis, that doesn't mean you have to drive it! So, really think about where your comments are coming from before you write them. This entry was clearly written in the spirit of good fun, and look - some of you COULDN'T WAIT to slam him...for something that was HIS CHOICE and HIS OPINION. If you're happy in your BMW, that's great. But chill out people - it's just a blog. Some of you behave as though he's making a personal attack against you. I'm sure he's very happy for all you BMW lovers out here. So - laugh it off =D

jefferson1964 says:

Whats interesting about reading the posts is there is some downright ANGER over the thought of a BMW being compared to a Hyundai. Its just not this blog, but on the Genesis reviews most report positive on their experience then someone steps in and slams the car who obviously does not own one or based upon their review would have the worlds worst buyers remorse to date.

I think the anger and maybe a little bit of worry comes from the fact the Hyundai can bring to market an auto that brings real value to the masses not just to those that can buy an upper end BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi...etc. and i think that brings anger from some of the above auto owners and well as worry to a few that now maybe those resale value might not hold up as well when someone can buy New what can and does rival a used luxury in price. Eat your heart out Hyunda just low blowed the luxuries and wait until you see the 2010 Sonata...here comes some more upper scale buyers to hyundai....cya on the streets girls...

bebe888 says:

Big fan of BMW 7 series but... gotta give it to Hyundai for its value. I'd rather spend 35K on Genesis and maybe on a new Nissan 370Z Nismo or Shelby Mustang - one serious and one fun.
