Will cars like this Audi S5 vanish due to a troubled economy? I hope not, it's the kind of car that makes life worth living.
So long as there are cars like the Audi S5, enthusiasts and automotive enthusiasm will thrive. I just spent a few nights with our new S5 - here's how it went:
After I meticulously adjust the 10 way power seats, I connect my iPod and hand pick a list of freshly downloaded tracks. I spin the 4.2 liter FSI V8 to life with the push of a simple looking button. At the same time the Bang and Olufsen stereo syncs up and Silversun Pickup's crunchy "Panic Switch" fills the cabin.
I cruise out of my neighborhood and onto the main street. Lakewood Blvd. is also state highway 19 but the speed limit is just 40 miles per hour. In second gear, I'm already technically breaking the law. After a long tunnel, there's an entrance to the 405 fwy. It snakes right then left, winds around and eventually dumps me out onto 5 lanes of open highway. As the horizon becomes uncluttered, I gradually add more speed and take the 3 to 4 shift. The opening chords of Van Halen's "Unchained" come pouring through the speakers and blend perfectly with the V8's exhaust note. I put the windows up and take 5th gear. After that, I drove to a place you can't get to by any road. A place where I endlessly lap the streets of Roseville, California in a fuel injected Fiat Spider with only about 100 hp and a handful of cassette tapes. Both then and now, the slight smile is unexpected and free. Thanks Audi.

It's one of the cars that have reported an increase in sales even through the downfall of the economy...

Wait untill you play it in Guitar Hero.
Viva the S5.

Wow, I'm impressed that you guys haven't yet ruined the looks of your new S5 by installing a front license plate, which looks to be some sort of Edmunds.com sacrilegious requirement, judging by how bad some of your other cars look with front plates installed. Oh, the humanity!

I took a class with a recently graduated MBA student who in his early 20s have owned a successful business of his own that enabled him to drive a black Audi S5. Oh the humanity, the humility of me driving something lesser (in terms of excitement!).

personally, I think the audi S5 is the most ideal car in the world in terms of handling, presence (not too little or too much), performance, styling, exhaust, interior, etc... this is the reason why audi is getting so much deserved attention

Too bad states that require front plates don't have some sort of optional Euro design plate... I'd think they could pick up some extra coin (if not all that much).
I dont usually feel this way, but I've seen a local S5 with a dummy Euro front plate and think it looks pretty good.

CArs like this should disappear due to concern for the environment. The S5's weight and hp are out of line with what we should be driving. YOu dont need that much power, anything faster than a Prius is unecessary and wasteful. Couple this thing with a small four banger or hybrid powertrain and slash the weight by 500lbs and you may be on to something. This thing gets about the same mileage as a Tahoe.

1487 - I get VERY nervous and start looking over my shoulder a lot whenever I hear/see someone pointing the finger and telling others what we should or should not be doing.
"...what we should be driving." That's how it starts. When will CARB start requiring armbands for non-compliant citizens?

What's with Audi not building the kinds of cars consumers crave? Obviously, they (consumers) would be buying cars rated at 40 mpg, if responsible automakers would only build them.
Isn't it Audi's patriotic duty to build greener cars? I mean, as members of NATO, why would they want to increase American oil dependence?

If CARB had its way the S5 wouldnt even be sold in California. can you image the carbon emitted by a a V8 powered coupe that gets 14/21? This thing is a danger to everyone.

Now you are getting on board with the "green" logic. Its funny how IL is in California and yet their LT fleet is short on hybrids and fuel misers and long on V8s.

I would be happy with an A5 but if i had cash in my pocket, i'd likely buy an older car and make it perfect skipping anything new altogether. But this isn't a blog about what I'd do with a bunch of money it's about our long term vehicles and on that note, the S5 is very very good. So good that you start forgetting about other cars.

Calling carbon dioxide a pollutant is an absolute scam. We exhale it. Plants need it, and we all like trees, right? Trees are good, and kind,
and their presence in increasing numbers, if we plant more of them, will save the world. Just like The Obama.
So - carbon dioxide good. Oxygen good. And the plants and animals of the world get along just fine.

Keep fighting the Green fight, my Philly friend. Who knows? You might even get a sloppy wet kiss from Al Gore. As for me, my idea of a hybrid vehicle is one that burns gas AND rubber...

Only you would be foolish enough to think I was serious. When have you ever heard me extolling the virtues of hybrids? I was mocking all of the people who are so "green" when they want to criticize Hummers or the general lack of fuel efficiency of American vehicles but get all weak kneed when the discussion centers around a 14mpg S5 or M3. Some of the same people who worship cars like that will turn around and tell you with a straight face that "Detroit" needs to focus on making small fuel misers that people want to buy instead of gas guzzlers. You people are so quick to pounce that you can't even recognize irony.
Most of the time you are accusing me of being a GM fan but now you think I'm a super radical environmentalist. That is a contradiction- no environentalists like GM or any domestic automakers. They are raised to hate American cars and put Toyota on a pedastal. Use some common sense before you post next time.

You should have enough sense to know I have never talked about the Prius or even shown remote interest in slow, efficient vehicles that are bland and unattractive. I was the one talking about the CTS-V with regards to the M3 and M5. People that like the CTS-V are not Prius fans. Learn the meaning of sarcasm.

PS:
The only people more self righteous and insufferable than BMW owners who happen to be fanboys (as opposed to the majority who just want to drive a pricey car for status) are hybrid owners. I don't like either group all that much because they are judgemental about what everyone else drives.

LOL! Indeed. Got to love people who make assumptions about what others can afford. Only an idiot assumes that the car one drives is truly indicative of one's wealth. Its also pretty funny that people think everyone drives the most expensive car they can afford. Some put their money towards other things and drive reasonably priced cars. What a concept.

Not difficult for anyone with a modicum of common sense or the ability to recognize blatant saracasm. Only difficult to folks who have nothing to say unless it involves chastisement of 1487. Just proves you will attack anything I say. I've never advocated hybrids or expressed any desire to see powerful cars disappear. Just exposing hypocrisy- nothing more.

Coming from a guy who's in love with the CTS-V, which has a *gasp 550hp Supercharged V8. Yeah, because that cars engine is SO efficient lol. Palease 1487, your full of it. I wish there was an age limit on these forums so 12year olds like 1487 couldn't even comment.
