2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Replacing the Windshield

jetta window blog.jpg

You'll remember Al's post from yesterday, the one that showed a very interesting ringed pattern caused by unknown debris going very quickly (or we were going quickly, math is tricky that way).

Lucky for us, Volkswagen of Santa Monica had replacement glass in stock and took our car this morning. Less than four hours after drop-off we got the call that our oil burner was done and could be picked up.

Parts: $330.65

Labor: $210.00

Tax: $30.59

Total Cost: $571.24

How long before you can remove the bandages across the top?

Usually the insurance covers glass with $250 deductible

I pay $0 for non-collision glass damage.

Holy crap. I just replaced 2002 Civic glass for a family member last friday, in Chicago, for $165. PPG with tint as well. Even the other places I got quotes from were only approx $200.

Why did you go to the dealership?!

"Less than four hours after drop-off"

uhm... 1996 Nissan maxima: $243, they came to me and replaced it on the spot, it took about an hour and was covered by insurance.

I know CA is supposed to be an expensive place to live, and maybe this windshield has some special treatments on it or something, but $570 for a windshield is embarassing. I could never justify that, I'd just drive around with the baseball mark.

You can't be serious going to the dealership and spending $570 to have the windshield replaced, you guys have more money than brains. I went online to Safelite glass who will come out to your work and they quoted $237, do you guys use money as TP there? I drive an Acura RL which is more than twice the price of your Jetta and I wouldn't take it to the dealership, okay I'm done now sorry.

the price you paid is ridiculous.

Wow. I spent $250 on new winshield for my 2002 Civic SI one year ago, and they came to me to replace the glass. I'm in Los Angeles.

I suspect that the glass he had installed at the dealership was the same glass they install at the factory. UNLIKE the glass the mobile installers use.
THAT said. The Parts price is a bit high. The installation price is OUTRAGEOUS. For one thing they likely charged for a 2 or 3 hour job for a job that takes 30 minutes. That sucks.

Personally I think 278 + tax including installation is a good way to go.
Now what is the difference between OEM windshields and one installed by a guy with a truck in your driveway?

WTF?

Who goes to the dealer to have the windshield replaced?

Are you guys dealer shills in disguise?

What they charged for labor is blatant thievery.

Why should your readers beleive in you if you are not savvy enough to know how and where to have a simple windshield replaced?
