2008 Cadillac CTS: Fuel Economy Update

car-of-the-week-banner.jpg Cadillac CTS at the test track

We haven't updated our Cadillac CTS' fuel economy in a looooooong time -- updating the fuel log just took me 30 minutes. But here's the damage.

Overall Average: 19.2 mpg
EPA Combined: 20 mpg

Best: 32.5 mpg (Bravo, Scott Oldham)
Worst: 9.9 mpg (Double bravo, Mike Magrath)
Longest Distance on One Tank: 401.2 miles (25.6 mpg by Dan Pund)
Most Fuel in One Tank: 20.598 gallons

(Update: As a sharp reader noted, the CTS only has an 18-gallon gas tank. Not really sure how the 20.598 happened. Maybe someone filled up their lawnmower on the company tab.)

That is a little disappointing to me, I'd like to think a mid-sized sedan can do better than the high teens, even if it is a powerful one. Then again, you are a bunch of leadfoots.

Given that we're leadfoots, I'd say an average within 1 mpg of the EPA combined estimate is pretty good. And 32.5 mpg on a car rated at 26 highway mpg is just stellar.

I'm satisfied with these fuel economy results considering you guys are leadfoots. =P

32.5 mpg is impressive.

The best I've ever done on my 130 HP 4 cyl Legacy is 31 mpg on the hwy (rated at 24 mpg hwy for some stupid reason).

Sounds about right. Not only are they aggressive drivers, they also have to put up with the really bad traffic in the LA area.

The 3.6L is no fuel sipper in my experience with the engine. Let's not forget how much this car weighs either- it's pretty damn heavy. I've seen a Saturn Aura average around 16mpg.

9.9, yikes, that seems bad even for a track day.

9.9 mpg is superb. I would have liked to be in the car on that trip. That's what I got towing a boat with my old Ram Hemi. Nice!

Ataboy, Magrath! You guys should keep a mileage board to track the best and worst tanks for each car. Add a points system, and I've got a new fantasy sport!

I'd be a pretty safe pick in that draft.

The CTS has an 18.5 gallon tank to my knowledge- how did it take 20 gallons of gas?

The mileage on the CTS is only slightly worse than the LT Aura, Altima and Accord. Most V6 powered cars average 20-22mpg overall with IL.

Awful fuel economy. I get 21-22 average with my 335i and I'm heavy on the gas and WOT.

9.9? That's even less than the GT-R, Challenger, and 7 series in the fleet!

My 500 bhp B7 loaner averaged 8.5 mpg lapping Motorsport Ranch.

The economy is crap for a direct injected motor with modest output.

"As a sharp reader noted, the CTS only has an 18-gallon gas tank. Not really sure how the 20.598 happened. Maybe someone filled up their lawnmower on the company tab"

You would have to put Mike Magrath on the top of the list of suspects.

Interesting that no one mentions the mileage of the LT 135i which is several hundred pounds lighter and had a lower "lowest" fuel economy result. Ace47? Bluedotcom? Either way, their CTS is averaging more than my 156hp 3000lbs Mazda3 so I ain't mad.

1487 says:

The 135 should be capable of better mileage considering its weight. Then again, BMW gas motors arent known for fuel economy.

Modest output? Only two cars in the class have more hp. MB onlyu gives you 268hp in a $50k E350 which costs more than a loaded CTS. Just give up until you do some basic research on cars. You have to be the only person on here who is wrong EVERY time they post.
