Long-Term Road Tests

Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

Old Cars Out, New Cars In: Bye-bye R8, C300, X5 and Grand Caravan

R8-bbq.gif

In the past couple of weeks we've had a lot of turnover in our long-term fleet. Some cars have gone bye-bye and we've gotten a couple of newbies. I thought you'd want an update.

Gone are the BMW X5, Audi R8 and Dodge Grand Caravan. There will be no more blogs on these cars, but look for an in depth wrap-up on each in the next few weeks, just like the one we published on our Mercedes C300 today. All three are already missed. The X5 and R8 were staff favorites, and the minivan proved to be great at moving people and things, even if we didn't always shower it with praise.

New to the fleet is a bitchin' black 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T we purchased about a week ago. Look for its full introduction to this blog next week and a flood of posts soon after. We also recently acquired a Hyundai Genesis sedan and a Nissan 370Z, both of which we introduced to you and this blog recently.

Soon to finish up their time in our fleet will be the Cadillac CTS, Pontiac G8, the 2002 BMW E46 M3, our Subaru WRX STI and our BMW 135i. Any suggestions on replacements?

Please, just not another variation of a vehicle you already have!

When I look through the list of cars you have, I see you don't have a single pickup. Now, I'm not in love with pickups and I know their sales numbers are down, but they're still a big chunk of the market. Dodge and Ford both have new full-sizers worth evaluating, for instance.

There was some discussion of picking up an older Porsche, like a 996. I think that would be fascinating...much like the M3, it would be a great performance car for the initial purchase price of $25-$30k, but how would it stand up to the test of time? What would its maintenance costs look like? Enthusiasts want to know just how much damage a 5 to 10 year old 911 could do on their wallet in the long run, and just how worth it it would be, because I think there are several of us out there who would be interested in owning one.

ZR1 (to compare to the GTR)
Insight
Fusion Hybrid (or the Mercury version)
Taurus (SHO?)
GLK350

And I know trucks are out of vogue, but you've done Silverado and Tundra and seem to enjoy having a pickup handy, so you might as well do the others - F150 and/or Ram. Maybe wait for the new V8 on the F150 though.

clarkma5 says:

12:41 PM, 03/13/09

Oh, and sorry to double post, but a ZR1 would be an awesome long-term replacement for the R8. Similar priced car and people are dying to hear about it.

zoomzoom22 says:

12:41 PM, 03/13/09

Since you'll be BMW free (and that is no way to live!), how about adding a 335d? This would also fill the hole left by the CTS. Plus, it's just an awesome car.

On a more realistic and affordable note, I would also love to see a Subaru Forester 2.5X, non-turbo. I own one and would love to read about your opinions and compare them to my own.

A Ford Fusion Hybrid is also a good option. Or a Honda Insight. Or the restyled, goofy looking but still top of the class Mazda3. I'd love to hear how that little nav works out.

Or, how about something old school (along the lines of the Ferrari 308)? Maybe a 911?

Come to think of it, why not just add all four?

carlisimo says:

12:42 PM, 03/13/09

You had a Mitsubishi Lancer GTS, right? How about a base model Lancer? And a Ralliart? The latter could be a sportback.

hehe

12:42 PM, 03/13/09

What happened to the Edge?

I second the 911 but I'd say 993 or 964. If it's watercooled, I'd say go Boxster. Shoot for a 20K Porsche...

ahightower says:

12:43 PM, 03/13/09

New MazdaSpeed3, whenever it comes out

zoomzoom22 says:

ahightower says:

12:51 PM, 03/13/09

Yeah. Boxster, not 911. Cheaper is mo' better.

Or how about the $5K used sports car? Get an old Miata and tune it and beat it up on a race track now and then. The Edmunds Miata Cup team. Could be fun to watch.

dips200 says:

12:58 PM, 03/13/09

I'd love to see the WRX. I know Inside Line already did a review of the car, but seeing as it is a more affordable version of the STi I'd want to know what it is like to live with. Also good would be a Lotus Elise and I'd second the idea of the new MazdaSpeed 3. The Ford Fusion and/or F-150 would be a good add. Also, I like the idea of the ZR1, you guys can see if you like it as much as Jeremy Clarkson.

subytrojan says:

In case you missed my e-mail, Chief, I'd like to see a Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T plus mods. :o)

A new Mazda MAZDA3 (that's for you, Mechanic) would be cool, but I'm guessing Mazda wouldn't wanna hook ya'll up with that since the MAZDA6 is already in the fleet.

A ZR1 would be sweet, but my bowtie of choice is the Camaro SS. :o)

A Challanger... seems like a car with a very limited market. Unlike the GT-R and R8, the Challanger is within the reach of most people, but they don't sell many. I hope you at least get a 2010 Mustang to compare it with, and when the Camaro comes out all three at once would be awesome.

Also, a Toyota Venza with the new 2.7 liter 4 would be a good addition.

carlisimo says:

05:05 PM, 03/13/09

They've previously posted justifications for the import bias - there's an import bias in the cars that edmunds.com users look up. They post those search stats annually.

I'd like to see an Acura and a Kia. They're brands that have taken new directions - one for the worse, and one for the better. I'd love to see if it's just hype or if it's true. TSX or TL, Soul or Forte (if it's out soon enough). Other "new" departures could include the Fusion hybrid. And how about a Lincoln? They're so off-the-radar, I know nothing about them.

FromBrazil says:

05:11 PM, 03/13/09

No more Mitsubishi Evos pls! One is more than enough. Enough Subies, too. By the quantity of them on these pages you'd think they'd be selling like hotcakes.

An interesting one would be another Cadillac just like the one you have now. Why you ask. To see if production over the years has helped to improve the "small things". Since it's just such a great cars, except the small things, I'd love to see it get another view. And from GM a Malibu might do.

Yes, I agree w/ all above who said Fusion, Taurus, Fiesta. Get any of them, or all of them. I'd be pleased.

No Hondas, Toyotas but maybe a run of the mill Nissan. Like a Sentra.

And a good old, 10 year old Focus or Escort to see how they're going after all this time. No Civic, Corollas, Camrys or Accord of this vintage need apply pls! We know how they hold up. Would love to see an old Ford though. How about it? Could be fun and fitting for these tough economic times. And even, maybe, crossing-fingers, a little enlighting.

G8 must be replaced by a Camaro, and as an enthusiast I can't believe I'm saying this buy go for a V6 model. It is finally a pony car with a high-performance 6, gets great mileage, its what the non-GT G8 should have had, and the Camaro is built on Zeta II, so it is the perfect replacement for the G8.

Other than that, a Volvo or Saab would be nice. A Boxster or Cayman would be good. I'd like to see the new Mazda3 or Mazdaspeed3. For the R8 replacement, a high-end Jag or an Aston would be nice. That would bring a little bit of Britishness that seems to be missing around here. An Insight or Fusion hybrid would be good to see if hybrids finally make sense. Those are my picks.

Definitely get a 335d.

An A3 TDI when they come available would be nice.

Taurus SHO

Acura TSX - maybe with the V6 if its available. I have started to hate their styling, but I'm curious if they're worthwhile at all as a driver's car.

Since they've all shelved the half ton diesels for now, how about a crew cab, short box 3/4 ton diesel. A lot of 1/2 ton truck owners are tempted to bump up to a 3/4 diesel to see if the fuel economy is better than a 1/2 ton gasser despite the extra weight and larger engine.

It would also be a nice test bed for some of the same mods you're putting on the EVO GSR. The aftermarket is full of intake, exhaust, chips, etc. that claim more power and better fuel economy.

I'd rather see a 1/2 ton diesel and if you could somehow talk GM into giving you (or better yet me) a test mule I'd take that too. But we've all read the words from last week...

I'll just pile on here... I'd love to see the new Mazda 3 (not especially interested in the Mazdaspeed3, though), Honda Insight, Kia Soul, Toyota Venza, and Ford Fusion Hybrid.

2010 Ford Taurus
Also maybe a pre-owned more expensive make like a star-mark Benz, certified Lexus, or something from those type of makes to see how they last and if buying a more expensive pre-owned car is really a good idea.

joebar says:

10:54 AM, 03/15/09

That's a great idea jifdin. Used 2006/7 A8's and 750's are running around $30k right now.

BMW 335d - first high performance diesel in U.S.
Tesla roadster - no explanation needed
Honda FCX Clarity - can't understand why you didn't get on Honda's list for the fuel cell mobile
Mini Cooper electric - Edmunds better be able to get on this list
Ford Fusion or Mercury Milan hybrid - best U.S. hybrid? Better than Japanese?
Chevy Camaro - the return
Ford Taurus SHO - the return
Dodge Sprinter Van - Edmunds really needs a van and this one has a Mercedes diesel
Ford F150 or Dodge Ram - Edmunds also needs a truck
Think electric car from Norway

On the used car front:

Please pick up either a 1980-1982 911 SC, a 1989 911 5-speed (had a number of improvements over the 84-88 models), or a 1995-1998 911 (those run 25-40k).

Your readers want it, you know you want it...just train your staff on how to invoke the pendulum before handing them the keys.

An old Supra or 300zx twin turbo would be cool too :)

(Or an old RX-7 turbo...)

Lastly, I don't think this has been widely recommended yet....but how about a used AMG model? I'm personally a huge fan of the C32 supercharged AMG model, but even a C55 or E55. I'd love to see how they old up a little later in life.

On the new front:

I know you don't like to do a 2006 3-series and then a practically-the-same-except-the-engine new one, but a 335d would be a great choice. Plus it's an automatic, so you'd be testing out a whole new drivetrain.

New Mazda3...but make it the Mazdapspeed 3.

I have to support a nice volvo Station Wagon of some sort.

Wait for one of the new Subarus to emerge....new Legacy or Outback, since you've done the newer body style STI.

How about a Saab? I feel like its the forgotten brand on here.

A new Gen VI GTI when it comes out.

An Audi S4 in it's "less is more" supercharged V6 format.

Nothing from Acura until they correct their evil ways (ok, maybe the 2010 TSX with 3.5 liter V6 engine....maybe).

I'll come back later once the coffee kicks in more.

drmillerM3 says:

07:50 AM, 03/16/09

I think you should continue to test the performance benchmark for luxury/sports coupes; that is, the M3.

So snag up a new one (E9*), and enjoy the newer, lighter 100+ hp/lter engine.
Perhaps the sedan so that you can rave about it having 4 doors, yet remaining totally track capable.

sgude says:

07:58 AM, 03/16/09

It's easy --
old NSX
old Boxster
new 335d
new GTI
new Genesis Coupe.

I think it's safe to say that Edmunds is going to acquire, without our prompting, one of the following --
Camaro
a variation of the Corvette
a Fusion Hybrid to compare to the Pious... oops, Prius

joefrompa says:

08:57 AM, 03/16/09

I'm going to say stay away from the used Boxster. Here's why:

The 1997-2004 models aren't exactly the well-loved Porsches of the century. Between their blander looks, underpowered earlier engines, cheaper interiors, etc....they actually have very very low resale value. Maybe a 2005+ would be ok, but would it give a real impression of what it's like to own a "used Porsche"? Perhaps.

I'd still be happy, personally, if edmunds picked up a 2005-2006 Boxster S....but I'm just sayins....

The 911 of 1978-1983 (SC), 1987-1989, 1995,1998 are all icons, desirable, air-cooled, have an engine sitting behind the rear axle, make glorious sounds, drive distinctly like an old porsche, and hold their resale value.

Sgude - To my knowledge, there are significant engine flaws in almost all of the water cooled Porsche engines since 1997. One of the most infamous is the RMS failure of the 2.5 liter boxsters, but there's alot of others out there too. One thing to remember is that these engines are often driven only 5000 miles a year....so alot of 1997 models are still only around 60,000 miles. It's going to take some time before they start really exhibiting their true colors.

1978-1983 911 SCs were fairly bulletproof, but I think had a valve guide weakness. 1995-1998 air cooled 3.6 liter engines are probably the safest of all....the main problem was getting clogged air injection systems from carbon build-up, which would require hard core spending to fix, but could most likely be prevented by simply driving the car as it was meant to be driven. Too many owners puttering around and babying the car along with using it as a second vehicle lead to alot of build-up.

Personally, I wouldn't want to own a Porsche made in the last 10 years without the cash or ability to do a serious engine repair at some point in the future.

since the economy is down I would like to see more focus on vehicles under $35k but I doubt that will happen. I would also like to see worthy domestic vehicles get a slot before we get a 3rd variation of some import branded product. No more BMWs in the near future. NO more boxy econo cars like the Cube that few are buying when gas is $2 a gallon. No V8s when a nice V6 is available.

Fusion Hybrid
Camaro V6
Genesis Coupe
Lacrosse
F150 or Ram
XF
Equinox

Do not buy any stupid used sports cars with high repair needs or any cars from brands that are about to be killed like Saab or Saturn.

Only one other person interested in a new Cadillac SRX?

I think it's a pretty important car... This is Cadillac's chance to not only have one star player (the CTS), but become a serious brand again as a whole. The crossover market itself is becoming important these days...

Considering you are getting rid of a Caddy that did pretty well during its stay, why not try out another one?

Plus the thing is stunning!

Other than that:
New ZR1 !!!!
Old Miata
