2009 Nissan GT-R: Steering Column

Have we ever showed you how the steering column adjusts in the GT-R?

There are two levers underneath. The right one allows you to move the steering closer or further away. The one on the left lets you move up and down.

The interesting thing about the GT-R is that not only does the steering column tilt up and down, but the entire instrument panel moves with it.

I haven't been in our 370Z yet, but I'm pretty sure it has this feature, too.

This is a Nissan thing isn't it? I thought Most of their cars, even some of the Infinitys had this.

I think the first-generation Ford Probe had that as well. Otherwise it's primarily a Nissan thing.

The 1986 Mazda RX-7 had the instrument cluster tilt with the steering wheel.

Nissan whored this feature out on most of their models. The gauges looked bad though, especially the Murano. Ugly small and dull.

Most Nissan products have this feature, G35, G37, Z, FXs, Maxima.....those are the ones I remember.

Back in the late 80s I had the misfortune of driving a rental Ford Probe(my pristine Bavaria 3.0 had been rear-ended by a brain-dead moron) and it too had the same feature.

For the record, the 2009 370Z coupe does have the tilt-steering column with integrated gauges. The new Roadster will have it too.

Yeah, Porsche pioneered this in the 928. I've never been a huge fan of it but I guess it's fine.

Am I the only person who is kind of appalled that an $80,000 car doesn't have a power steering column?

I was shocked it didn't have one either, but hey one less thing to break.

BTW most Infiniti and Nissan products have this sort of setup.

mercedesfan & gdmstrb. No, I'm not. When I'm either "shocked" or "appalled" it usually isn't about whether or not a car has a power steering column.

What a great post! I really love the use of video in your posts.
Suggestion: in future posts when you have a video camera, could you use hand puppets to simulate driving? Maybe have them argue with each other about features in the cars?

I know, you may not have thought about it, but I bet lots of other readers would like to see that too! I'd start with little animals and maybe see where that takes you.

I am not shocked it doesn't have a power column. If you don't get it, you just don't get it. The money for the car went into the powertrain and handling. Not too much fluff. It still has plenty, but no matter what it has, it won't have as much as your typical 4700 lb Mercedes.

Prove me if I am wrong, but I thought Infiniti(Nissan) offers Key-less entry option, which you can adjust your seat and steering column position and pair the setup with your key. Everytime when you start the vehicle with the key, the seat and steering column will automatically adjust to your setup. Does GT-R not offer that?

P.S. It is called telescope steering.

The GTR has telescopic adjustments. The wheel also adjusts up/down along with the instrument panel. Two levers underneath the column, and as other have noted similiar setups.

It is all manual. So, no there is no power adjustment, and the car doesn't not have multiple driver memory setup. But this isn't a car which mom and dad are swapping on a regular basis!

I think rather than explaining the mundane aspects of the steering adjustments, Edmunds should take the next step and mod the car a bit. It seems to be about that time lest things get even more mundane.

The weapon-of-choice for a modestly priced mod right now in the GTR owner circles is the Cobb Accessport ($995). Gains of 50+ WHP can be had with a new mid-pipe, Accessport & a custom tune. All that would set the boys back about $2,500 - $3,000 total. Pretty reasonable to generate some decent write-up material for Edmunds I think.

The movable instrument panel is great and is one of the main reasons I bought the G-TR. I am a very tall person I can freely move my legs under the wheel, it’s great. I was never able to do that in my BMW X5 or Chevy Suburban or BMW 7. Go figure the Japanese would make one of the roomiest sports cars.

Also the Merc CLK Black has a manual steering column as well as the new Porsche 911 4S.
