2009 Hyundai Genesis V6: Ouch

car-of-the-week-banner2.jpg Genesis hit.jpg

Our 2009 Hyundai Genesis V6 got into a tussle with a 2-ton block of concrete over the weekend -- and lost.

The damage was relatively minor: no mechanical damage and the tail lights were spared.

It's completely driveable, so we'll still cover it for Car of the Week. But a trip to the body shop is in its future.

For so-called Professional Automobile Journalists, you guys seem to drive like newly licensed teenage girl.

Why so many incidents?? I also like how you guys phrase your accident reports - it's always as if it just happened without any driver interference.

Playing the devil's advocate, their cars do accumulate many more miles than the average car, so the chance of incidents is higher.

That said, sometimes I really have to shake my head and sigh when I see yet another post of something breaking or being broken.

This car has rear backup sensors & front parking sensors. So, they can't claim that rear visibility was an issue. If it happened while driving forward, then someone needs to relearn the concept of safe space envelope around your car.

And besides, 17k-20k miles a year isn't all that much.

When my son was in grade school he scraped the front fender of my wife's 3 Series with his bicycle. He lost video game and computer access for a month- not to mention his allowance. Perhaps a similar system of penalties should be imposed on the LT fleet drivers...

You don't have 15 different cars that have 15 different sizes and turning circles. These people hop in and out of these cars in a daily basis. Some miscues are bound to happen.

Can't you push that dent out from inside the trunk?

billt9 says:

That's a $3000-$4000 repair right there. Metal quarter panel and Bumper damage.

billt9 says:

The pain! I feel the pain! Such a nice car...

you guys really need to learn how to take care of your vehicles better.

i know that some of them may not be bought by you and are prepared by manufacturers, but still. all of these accidents that happen one after another is just ridiculous. it makes this blog look unprofessional and just reckless; if anything, it takes away from the credibility of this blog quite a bit.

Ouch! Ha ha. I guess it was a good lesson for him, though. I agree that it is a bit sad that all of these damages occur with these cars, especially with an automobile as nice as the Genesis.

Give 'em a break. This is part of the "How much is the body shop going to take us for?" test.

You guys are mean! I challenge you to name one other instance of edmunds editors pranging their cars.

(did I say one? better make that twenty..)

cx7lover says:

That can be repaired easy.

g8gtnorth says:

07:21 PM, 03/30/09

@cx7lover,

For some reason I don't see that happening. Having worked for insurance, I feel confident things like this tend to be more expensive than people realize.

Bumper will most likely have to be repainted and then the rest of the back will have to be blended to match, and that's for starters.

Long gone are the days where things could be "buffed out".

wobbly_ears says:

07:54 PM, 03/30/09

Shush you guys! They're trying to help the local economy by keeping their friendly bodyshop occupied.

They must love Edmunds LT drivers! Insurance companies...not so much!

cx7lover says:

08:08 PM, 03/30/09

The bumper isn't even deformed. You can repair both. I had similar much WORSE damage in the same area on my CX-7. It was repaired. The only thing replaced was the taillight.

cx7lover says:

08:10 PM, 03/30/09

I didn't say inexpensive, I said it could be repaired. You don't need to replace anything, it can be fixed without buying a new bumper or rear quarter panel.

cwmoo740 says:

Has anyone here read the motor trend long term notes they have in their magazines? They smashed an Audi A8 because of a "failure to merge" in which the MT driver was clearly at fault. 40k worth of repairs. They also ran into a rock while "practicing defensive driving in the snow" in an STi. Compared to MT, IL is doing a pretty good job.

cruiserhead1 says:

If you can live with the scratches, I would go for "paintless dent repair" and just let it be.

I've done this with big dents and you can't tell afterwards. It's usually an hour or so and so easy. There is a place in Torrance but any dealer should know a good one. They often use them to pull dents out of new cars or cpo cars.

7driver says:

'If you can live with the scratches, I would go for "paintless dent repair" and just let it be.'

That won't work for Edmunds. They either sell the car or return it to the mfgr at the end of the long term test and "just letting it be" won't go well for either scenario.

g8gtnorth says:

10:10 PM, 03/30/09

@cx7lover,

That's a fair statement. I agree, I don't think they'll have to replace anything but the labour alone on this may be a big hastle.

They will probably bump, fill and blend the quarter, unless there is something else damaged underneath.

A 2 ton concrete block? Probably jumped out in front of you all.

Roadburner,

Maybe an appropriate punishment would be forcing the responsible party to drive the Smart car for a set amount of time or miles.

"That's a $3000-$4000 repair right there. Metal quarter panel and Bumper damage."

I doubt it. My sister backed into my car (2002 WRX) in the same exact spot this car was hit. It cost $700 to repair and respray.

joefrompa says:

My father recently scraped my Civic SI in about the same manner, except all the scrape was on the plastic bumper.

They quoted me $700 to remove, sand, re-paint, re-clear, and re-install.

I couldnt picture asking my father for that, so I just decided to drive it out. At 62k miles now....figure maybe something else will happen to the bumper before I get rid of the car.

playdrv4me says:

11:26 AM, 03/31/09

This is why it's so hard to find cars that haven't been repainted on at least one panel when you go to buy a used one. With that said, these cars are driven and handed from driver to driver to driver. It's pretty much inevitable that dents and scrapes will happen.

playdrv4me says:

11:30 AM, 03/31/09

Another thing to consider, elaborating on my comment above, is that your brain naturally develops a "memory" to the last car you have been driving for any period of time. When you're constantly hopping from vehicle to vehicle, you have to constantly re-adjust to the driving dynamics, visibility etc. of the next car, and that invariably can result in incidents.

anilpunjabi says:

Dude this is no body shop - from the pics - take it to bluewave and have them buff it out for 20 bux - i dont see any dents and it looks like there is just white pain on it - i did this my garage and 28 dollars later i got it off and a full car wash :)

billt9 says:

11:40 AM, 03/31/09

Ya... $700 plastic damage, then plus metal damage, then plus luxury car $40,000 instead of compact $25,000...

Whose Price is Right???

bradyholt says:

01:37 PM, 03/31/09

cwmoo740, it was Car and Driver that wrecked its S8.

carfreak8394 says:

02:16 PM, 03/31/09

bradyholt is right. If I remember correctly, the repairs cost almost as much as a base Genesis. (About $30,000).

misterfusion says:

04:38 PM, 03/31/09

Man, I sympathize with you guys. It was inevitable that this would happen -- those two-ton blocks of concrete can't handle worth a damn. I don't know why they're even allowed on the road.

roadburner says:

06:35 PM, 03/31/09

"Roadburner,

Wow, that punishment borders on being cruel and unusual...
