2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X MR: Stereo by Microsoft

EVO MR stereo.jpg

Where're the CNTRL, ALT and Delete keys on this car? I only ask because the Rockford Fosgate stereo keeps locking up. This crazy screen pops up, none of the buttons (which I hate; they're too small) work, there's no sound from the radio or the phone and there's no way get out of it. Only the tried-and-true Microsoft fix-it-all, turn the damn thing on-and-off until it fixes itself, works. And I mean the whole thing, the car, the radio's power button stops working so you've got to pull over, turn the car off, open and close the door and then restart the vehicle. Fun.

I've yet to find any TSB relating to this issue but I'll be sure to look into it more when we get closer to the car's 15,000-mile service.

My navigation in my Acura froze one in 3 years, and of course it happens when I not driving to work and I really need it.

Strangely enough, BMW's iDrive actually runs off of Windows CE, hmm...

Mike, I wonder what Microsoft has to do with this issue.

I think it has been a long long long time(prolly 8-10 years) since I had a BSOD or I had to resort to Ctrl-Alt-Del. Xp, Vista and the upcoming 7 have been as faultless as ever.

^ wow you've been lucky the 3 times you've used windows in the last 8-10 years.

wobbly_ears -
I do believe that you are in a very large minority (?) never having to do that...especially in that time frame.
Since this is a car site, I'm not going to go into it. That's all I wanted to say about that.

But that is absolutely ridiculous that there's no way around it other than restarting the car.

If you're in rush hour for an hour or so, the last thing you want to do is make the trip even longer by pulling over or pulling off at the next exit to do that procedure.

I find it hard to believe wobbly_ears. I also think that it is so dumb and time consuming what you have to go through in order to reset the system in the Evo.

All cars that have high-end head units/navigation should have some sort of reset button. I get that power cycling the entire vehicle is simple and effective, but it does not solve the problem of having to stop to do that. You might be able to do it in some cars while coasting, but I would not recommend that. I had a problem with iDrive where it would only accept input every 30 seconds or so. Thankfully, the "mute" button still worked, so I was not stuck listening to crap.

Mr. Magrath's sentiment could be seen as *slightly* unfair, since there are two vehicles in the fleet with radios that actually ARE by Microsoft, and they haven't had anything close to the kind of problem that is described here.

As I said, one *could* see it that way -- but considering how many times I've had to reboot #$@% WinXP, I'll admit that I understand the reasoning here.

I have been using computers when Unix was king. I run Ubuntu at home as primary, Windows at work & have a Hackintosh on a laptop, dual booting with Vista.

I think it is quite unfair to say that Ctrl-Alt-Del or BSOD is a regular occurrence on a modern windows machine. If at all it happens, 95% of the time is your errant driver for some obscure hardware component. I also find it strange when people complain about viruses & malaware. And most of the virii & malaware these days is due to social engineering.

And yes, even Linux & OSX suffer from Kernel panics. Windows doesn't have a monopoly on that.

There's other places for this wobbly.
Car talk. He's not saying Microsoft sucks. He's making a reference that everyone that speaks English, and geek (and that's meant in the respectful use of the term) knows as the way to get a quick fix of a Microsoft OS. Ctrl-Alt-Del.
That's all.

I personally blame RF. How long have they been in the nav biz? Who do the nuts and bolts behind this system belong to? That's who you have to go after.

What can I say, I just love flamewars!

I think the navi unit on the COMMAND system is the best. But the ones on Toyota are easier to master. And honestly, I can't believe that RF wouldn't test their products well enough. I expect better from RF.

The more I think about the problem, the more I get frustrated. It is absolutely inexcusable.
I'm surprised noboy's made a smart-a$$ comment about it being developed by GM!

If it happens once, that's one thing. Two times or more and there's a serious problem.
My phone does that and I want to throw it out the window. Drives me nuts.

Is it Monday?

"My phone does that and I want to throw it out the window. Drives me nuts."

Is it a Windows Mobile phone? :P.

Actually carfreak8394, I can attest about the suckiness of the Windows Mobile platform. I had a T-Mobile Dash WM phone. The alarm program on the phone was utter horrendous. If you set the alarm time, it would be set PERPETUALLY. You couldn't erase the alarm time. Imagine your phone going off at 5.30 am on weekends! (Google 'T-Mobile Dash Phantom Alarm' for the gory details.)

Now I have an Google Android phone & it eats WM for lunch! Lol!

The screen indicates that you are in the handsfree bluetooth mode. The head unit is trying to communicate with a cell phone. The most likely scenerio that would lock up your system is a cell phone that is not fully compatible with the head unit. Did you update the cell phone software lately? Reboot the head unit. Turn off your cell phone and see if it ever locks again. Turn on your cell phone and see if it locks up. Check Mitsu website under owners page to see if your cellphone is compatible. Try pairing another cell phone. Check handsfree system (in the vehicle) to see how many phones are paired to it. Your phone might be ok. Maybe one of the other phones isn't working correctly with the system when it is in the car. The NAV unit is not a Microsoft Product.
